For clearer ChatGPT virtual try-on previews, start with a clear photo of yourself and a clear image of the garment, then ask ChatGPT to change only the clothing. Make follow-up requests one specific change at a time. These steps can reduce ambiguity, but they cannot make a generated image a reliable size or fit check.
How do I get better virtual try-on results in ChatGPT?
You can start from a clothing or accessory listing that offers a Try on button, upload a selfie in that flow, and view the generated image. Or upload a photo of clothing or an accessory in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it might look on you. OpenAI describes both options in its Shopping with ChatGPT Search help article.
- Choose your starting point. Use Try on when it appears on a supported listing, or upload your own person and garment images in a chat.
- Identify the images. If you provide more than one, say which is the person reference and which is the garment reference.
- Set boundaries. Ask ChatGPT to replace only the clothing and specify what should stay the same, such as your face, pose, body shape, and background.
- Refine one thing at a time. If the output misses the color or changes the scene, ask for that one correction without adding several new requests.
For example: “Use the first image as the person reference and the second as the garment reference. Replace only the clothing with the jacket in the second image. Preserve the person’s face, body shape, skin tone, pose, and background. Match the original lighting and shadows. Do not change anything else.” This pattern adapts OpenAI’s virtual try-on prompting guidance; it is a way to make the request specific, not a guarantee of a particular result.
What photo should I upload for a virtual try-on?
Use a reasonably well-lit, clear photo in which you and the area where clothing will change are visible. Avoid objects or other clothing blocking the area you want ChatGPT to edit when practical. These are general suggestions for visual clarity, not OpenAI-published requirements or proven pass/fail rules for try-on accuracy.

For the garment reference, choose an image where the item’s visible design and color are easy to make out. If uploading both images, label their roles directly in your prompt. The OpenAI prompting example uses a person reference alongside garment references and recommends specifying what to preserve.
There is no formal selfie checklist for this feature in OpenAI’s reviewed help documentation. Treat pose, distance, background, and lighting choices as things to experiment with rather than settings known to improve fidelity. A phone stand or tripod can help take a hands-free reference photo, but it is optional and says nothing about how a garment will fit.

How should I handle lighting in a try-on prompt?
For your source photo, use enough light to see the person and clothing clearly; that is practical photo advice, not a documented ChatGPT requirement. For the generated edit, OpenAI’s guidance specifically recommends asking the model to match the original photo’s lighting, shadows, and color temperature so the added garment blends more naturally.
If the garment looks pasted in, try a focused follow-up such as: “Keep the person and clothing unchanged, but make the garment’s lighting and shadows match the original photo.” Review the result visually; coherent lighting does not establish accurate fabric, color, or fit.

Why does my AI try-on look different from me?
A try-on image is generated from the supplied images and instructions, and unclear or ambiguous image inputs may be interpreted less accurately. OpenAI’s Image Inputs FAQ also cautions that image results can be inaccurate. A changed face, pose, scene, or garment detail is a reason to refine the prompt, not evidence that the image is a faithful representation.
- If your face or body seems altered, explicitly ask to preserve your face and body shape.
- If the pose or background changes, say to keep the pose and background unchanged.
- If the wrong garment or color appears, identify the garment reference and ask to change only that item or detail.
- If the edit looks visually inconsistent, ask for lighting and shadows to match the source image.
When comparing attempts, look at whether the same person and pose remain, whether the garment’s visible design and color resemble the reference, whether the lighting and shadows look coherent, and whether anything else changed. These are visual review criteria—not measurements of fit.

The FAQ lists PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF as supported still-image formats and a 20 MB limit per image. It says images are resized and original file names and metadata are not processed. If an upload fails or is interpreted oddly, check that the file is a supported still-image format and within the stated limit, then try a clearer image.
Can ChatGPT tell me whether clothes will fit?
No. OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search documentation warns: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” A generated preview can help you explore a style, but it cannot confirm garment construction, exact color, physical drape, or how a particular size will fit.

Before buying, check the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return policy, as OpenAI’s shopping guidance advises. Use the preview as a visual aid, not as a substitute for those product and purchase details.
How do I manage reference photos?
OpenAI says saved reference photos can be reused, changed, or removed under Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. This gives you a place to manage the photos used as references if you want to update or remove one.
