Match your cordless vacuum’s cleaner head, brush-bar setting, and suction mode to the floor—and follow the manual for your exact model. Controls and floor tools vary, so a setting that helps on one vacuum may be unsuitable for another. Start with the vacuum manual and, for delicate flooring, the flooring maker’s care instructions.
Choose the right head and floor setting
Use the cleaner head and floor mode your vacuum maker recommends for the surface. Some models change brush-roll speed by mode; others have a brush-bar switch or separate suction control. Do not assume that mode names or controls work the same across brands.
Example: Shark CORDLESS PRO MultiFLEX
The Shark MultiFLEX manual describes hard-floor mode with slowly spinning brushrolls and carpet mode with faster-spinning brushrolls intended to pick up debris below the carpet surface. It also identifies ECO as the battery-saving option, Deep Clean as everyday cleaning power, and Boost as an extra burst of suction. These descriptions apply to the documented MultiFLEX product, not all cordless vacuums. The manual says, “For everyday cleaning power, select Deep Clean Mode.” Shark Support
Which Dyson head is for carpet?
Dyson’s guidance is product-specific: use the head and setting listed for your Dyson model and floor type. Check its user guide rather than choosing a head based on the brand alone; the appropriate attachment can differ between models and surfaces. Dyson’s brush-bar guidance

Set the brush bar carefully
If your vacuum has a brush-bar control, use it as the manufacturer directs. Dyson support advises turning the brushes off for delicate rugs, loop-pile carpets, and hard floors, and turning the brush bar on for carpet cleaning. This is guidance for applicable Dyson models, not a universal rule: some vacuums use different heads or controls.
Before using a rotating brush on delicate carpet or flooring, check the flooring manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. The UK Dyson V6 SV05 Absolute manual warns that a rotating brush bar may fuzz some carpets and damage certain carpet types or floors. For highly polished floors, it also advises checking that the underside of the floor tool and its brushes are free of foreign objects that could mark the surface. Adjust suction only when your model supports it
A suction slider may help balance pickup and maneuverability, but its labels and intended uses are model-specific. For example, Dyson’s V15 guidance describes a slider with plus for more suction on hard floors and durable surfaces, a middle position for mixed surfaces, and minus to help prevent sticking on high-pile carpets and delicate flooring. Hair, thread, and debris around the brush bar can interfere with its rotation; a blockage at the floor-tool opening can also affect operation. Switch off the vacuum and follow its user guide to inspect and clear the parts. How should I clean my Dyson brush bar?
Use the cleaning method in the guide for your specific Dyson model. Remove hair and debris as directed, and do not reinstall a washable brush bar until it has dried completely. Instructions and removable parts can vary by model.
Move the head gently around furniture
Dyson suggests using small wrist movements to guide its cleaner head around furniture. This can make maneuvering easier, but it is a handling tip—not a promise of better pickup. Follow your vacuum’s guidance and avoid forcing the head against furniture or flooring.
