To get a more useful answer from AI search, say what you want to accomplish, provide the context and limits that matter, and specify how you want the result presented. If the first response misses, identify the gap and ask a focused follow-up. Clearer prompts can guide a response toward your goal, but they do not guarantee that its claims are accurate or complete.
What to include in an AI-search prompt
OpenAI recommends stating a clear task, giving necessary context, and specifying the desired tone or style. Its Help Center says, “Clear, detailed prompts help ChatGPT understand your goals faster and produce more relevant and accurate responses.” Microsoft’s Copilot guidance groups prompt ingredients as goal, context, source, and expectations. These are useful starting points, not a universal formula proven to work equally well in every AI search product.
- Goal: State the question or decision you need help with. Replace a broad topic such as “electric cars” with a concrete task, such as comparing options for a particular household.
- Context and constraints: Add relevant audience, geography, timeframe, budget, scope, or other limits. Include only details that could change the answer.
- Sources: Name the material or source types you want considered, especially when the answer depends on recent or specialized information.
- Expectations: Request a useful format, level of detail, and comparison criteria. For a comparison, a table may be easier to use than a general summary.
For search-oriented questions, you can also ask for links or citations for key claims and for uncertainties or conflicting evidence to be identified. A request for citations does not establish that the answer is correct; inspect the linked material for important claims.
A practical prompt pattern
This fill-in structure is an editorial scaffold based on the goal, context, source, and expectations recommended in provider guidance. It is not a validated template or a guarantee of better results on every system.
#1 Best Overall
I’m trying to [goal]. Focus on [topic, scope, or geography] and use [source or source type], prioritizing information current to [date or period] if relevant. Give me [format and level of detail]. Include links or citations for key claims. If the evidence is incomplete or conflicting, say what remains uncertain.
Example: make a broad question answerable
Broad: “What are good electric cars?”
More focused: “Compare current compact electric cars available in [country] for a household with a [budget] budget. Use recent manufacturer specifications and independent safety information. Compare range, charging, price, and warranty in a table, link the sources, and flag missing or conflicting details.”
Rank #2
This version tells the tool what “good” means for this request and what evidence and format would help. The details in brackets need to be filled in for the answer to be meaningfully scoped.
How to improve a disappointing answer
Do not rewrite everything automatically. First work out what failed: the response may be too broad, omit a constraint, use the wrong audience or format, rely on unsuitable material, or skip one part of a multi-part question. OpenAI describes prompting as iterative: “Prompt engineering often requires an iterative approach.” Microsoft likewise recommends revising and trying again.
Rank #3
- Name the mismatch. Point to the missing detail or sub-question rather than saying only that the answer is bad.
- Add or correct the relevant context. Supply the geography, audience, timeframe, source, or constraint that would change the result.
- Narrow the next request. Ask for the missing part directly or reduce the scope to a manageable comparison.
- Change the format if that is the problem. For example, request a table with specific criteria instead of another general explanation.
- Check the revised answer. Follow its links and assess whether sources support the claims and match the requested scope and date.
Example follow-up
After the electric-car comparison, ask: “Now compare only the two models with the best fit for mostly city driving, and explain which figures come from manufacturer claims versus independent sources.” That gives the system a narrower task and asks it to distinguish evidence types.
Why advice differs between AI search tools
Provider instructions are not identical, and guidance for one product should not be treated as a rule for every answer engine.
Rank #4
| Guidance | What it emphasizes | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI prompt-engineering best practices | Precise requests and iterative refinement | ChatGPT; the page said it was updated two months before October 4, 2026 |
| OpenAI general prompt guidance | Clear task, necessary context, tone or style, appropriately sized requests, and iteration | OpenAI guidance for ChatGPT prompting; accessed October 4, 2026 |
| Microsoft Copilot prompt guide | Goal, context, source, expectations, and follow-up questions | Copilot; last updated February 2026 |
| Microsoft Copilot response guidance | Actionable instructions and experimenting with instruction order | Copilot; last updated February 2026 |
Microsoft’s Copilot-specific advice says instruction order can affect responses and suggests experimenting with the order, including placing information about files or sources last. Treat this as product-specific guidance, not a universal law about AI search. The available sources do not provide a current head-to-head evaluation of prompt techniques across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity, and other answer engines.

Use sources to check important claims
A prompt can ask for named sources, recent information, or links, but the wording cannot establish that a claim is true. Check important statements against the cited material: confirm that the source actually supports the claim, note its publication date, and make sure its geography and scope fit your question. If sources disagree or evidence is incomplete, ask the tool to distinguish what is supported from what remains uncertain.
Best Value
OpenAI’s developer documentation discusses providing relevant context, including retrieved context, when making model requests. That is technical guidance for developers, not a consumer guarantee that an AI-search product will retrieve or cite reliable evidence. No numeric improvement in answer quality from clearer prompting is established by the sources cited here.
What clearer prompts can—and cannot—do
Clear instructions help communicate the task and shape the response toward useful sources, scope, and format. They are most valuable when they remove ambiguity or make the next step specific. They cannot guarantee accuracy, completeness, or consistent behavior across services. Treat the first response as a starting point when the question matters: refine it where needed and verify consequential claims using the underlying sources.
Associated Press reporter Kelvin Chan described the basic principle in a July 3, 2025 report: “What you shouldn’t overlook, however, is that a chatbot’s output depends on what you tell it to do, and how.” That is useful context, while current product-specific instructions are better checked in each provider’s own guidance.
