There is no single unlock or control system for vehicles across Final Fantasy. A chocobo might be a regional mount, an airship might open free travel only after a story item, and a ship might follow a fixed route. This guide covers official, game-specific examples from Final Fantasy III, XI, XII, XIV, XV, and VII Rebirth—not an exhaustive catalogue of every mainline game and spin-off.
How to choose the right travel option
Check four things in the game you are playing: what unlocks the transport, where it can go, whether you control it or ride a service route, and whether its rules change by edition or platform. Do not assume an airship, chocobo, or ferry works the same way in another entry.
- Free or controlled travel: Some vehicles open broad exploration or let you steer; others serve only a local area.
- Route-based travel: A ship, ferry, or porter may take you between set destinations rather than letting you choose a course.
- Special traversal: Mounts may cross terrain that is otherwise difficult to navigate, while some vehicles support activities such as fishing.
- Version-specific rules: Check the game edition, platform, and current in-game requirements before following an old unlock description.
Square Enix describes airships as a recurring series feature, including the original Final Fantasy, the Lunar Whale in IV, the Invincible in IX, and the Strahl in XII. Chocobos have appeared in many entries since II and first flew in IV. Those recurring names do not imply shared controls or unlock conditions.
Chocobos and local vehicles
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: catch a regional chocobo
Catch a wild chocobo to call it within that region. Square Enix’s world guide describes these chocobos as helping with their home region’s terrain; it also notes that their equipment can be customized. Some chocobos can propel themselves through water. Ride one to explore, and sprint when you need to cover ground faster.

Not every useful ride is a chocobo: Costa del Sol has a wheelie, a two-wheeled self-balancing vehicle. Treat it as a local activity or vehicle, not a series-wide transport system.
Final Fantasy XIV: unlock your personal chocobo
The official Lodestone UI guide describes a personal chocobo unlock that requires level 20, a Grand Company, company seals, and the “My Little Chocobo” quest. Follow this sequence:
- Reach level 20 and join a Grand Company through the relevant main scenario quest.
- Earn company seals, then accept “My Little Chocobo” from your Grand Company.
- Exchange the required seals for a chocobo issuance and present it to that company’s chocobokeep.
- Name your chocobo, obtain the chocobo whistle, then summon it from the mount guide.
The guide’s wording and interface instructions are version-sensitive; use the current quest text and UI if a label or requirement differs in your game.

Airships: different ships, different unlocks
Final Fantasy XII: the Strahl
The Strahl belongs to Balthier. Square Enix says that obtaining a new skystone for it grants the ability to travel freely around the world. That establishes the unlock relationship, but not where to find a particular skystone or a complete item walkthrough.
Final Fantasy III (Nintendo-published manual)
The Nintendo manual describes the airship as a way to explore the world faster and with greater freedom. It also says that field enemies cannot attack the party while it rides chocobos or airships in this edition of III. That protection is specific to the manual’s game; it is not a general rule for Final Fantasy.
Ships and route-based services
Final Fantasy XI: licenses, passes, and routes
The official Final Fantasy Portal feature describes several distinct options: a chocobo requires a riding license obtained by completing a mission; ships serve river and sea locations; and airships connect national hubs. The feature says airship access requires a Chamber of Commerce and Industry pass and describes a fee of 500,000 gil. It also covers a barge and the Manaclipper, with set routes and onboard activities such as fishing.

The same feature says chocobos were originally rental-only and that meeting requirements later made raising one possible. It does not provide enough detail here for a reliable current mission-by-mission walkthrough. Because this is an online game and the feature may not reflect current requirements, check the in-game quest and travel information before spending currency or planning a route.

Final Fantasy XIV: ferries and other travel
XIV also offers airship and ferry travel, chocobo porter services, and teleportation at aetherytes. These are separate travel modes: a porter and an aetheryte are services, not vehicles you personally pilot. Use a ferry or airship when its route suits your destination; use the mount unlock above when you want to summon your own chocobo.

The Square Enix Store’s Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition listing for PS4 and Xbox One describes off-road Regalia customization, a quest to obtain and strengthen the Regalia Type-D, and a fully controllable Royal Vessel for exploring the waters between Cape Caem and Altissia. The listing also mentions fishing aboard the vessel. These are edition-specific features: verify the edition and platform you own rather than assuming they are present in every release of XV.
What “every vehicle” can—and cannot—mean
Vehicles and travel systems recur throughout the franchise, but the available official examples do not establish a complete title-by-title inventory or exact instructions for every release. For any vehicle not covered here, check its own game’s quest text, map, manual, and edition details. In particular, distinguish a free-travel unlock such as the Strahl’s skystone from a local mount, a fixed-route service, or a feature tied to a particular edition.
