Get the value from an input
Use an ID or another selector that targets the intended element:
const value = $("#myInput").val();With no argument, .val() is a getter. It returns the current value of the first element in the matched set, so a selector matching several inputs does not collect all their values.
Read values from multiple inputs
To collect values from every matching input, iterate over the selection:

}).get();If you need the values submitted by an entire form, jQuery’s serialize() and serializeArray() are alternatives for gathering form data; see Manning’s sample chapter from jQuery in Action, Third Edition.
Use the right method for the control
Inputs and textareas
Use .val() for an input or textarea. .text() reads text content and is not the method for retrieving a form input’s value; the jQuery .text() API reference directs form-control readers to .val().

Select menus
For a <select>, .val() returns the selected option’s underlying value, not necessarily the label displayed to the user. If you need the visible label, read the selected option’s text instead. For example:

Multiple-select menus
A multiple select returns an array of selected values. With jQuery 3.0 and later, no selected options produces an empty array; versions before 3.0 returned null.
Check for an empty match
If the selector matches no elements, .val() returns undefined. Check that the selector identifies the intended element and that your code runs after the element is available in the page.

Set a value and notify change handlers
Passing an argument makes .val() a setter, and it sets every matched element:
$("#myInput").val("new value");Setting a value does not automatically dispatch a change event. If the application relies on change handlers after a programmatic update, trigger the event explicitly:
