If a download on an iPhone or iPad asks for parent permission, there is no universal Apple-supported way to bypass that restriction. First identify whether the block is Ask to Buy, a Screen Time installation rule, or an age-rating limit. The supported next step is to request approval from the family organizer or parent/guardian; for a school app, ask the school administrator about managed distribution.
Find out what is blocking the download
“Parent permission” can refer to different Apple controls, and the right fix depends on which one is active. A free app can still trigger Ask to Buy, while Screen Time can separately block installation or restrict apps by age rating.

Apple explains that Ask to Buy can require a child to ask before downloading or purchasing an app regardless of its age rating. An age-rating restriction is a separate Screen Time control. Apple’s Ask to Buy guidance and its guide to App Store restrictions describe these controls.

When Ask to Buy is active, use the request shown by the App Store rather than trying to work around the family setting. The family organizer or a parent/guardian can approve or decline an eligible request. If approved, the item downloads; if declined, it does not.

- Open the app’s App Store page and choose the option to get or download it.
- When prompted, send the Ask to Buy request to the family organizer or parent/guardian.
- Wait for that adult to approve or decline the request. If approved, the download can proceed on your device.
Apple notes that Ask to Buy defaults and whether it can be turned off depend on the child’s age and country or region. In some jurisdictions it may be on by default and unavailable to turn off for a child under 18, so the setting is not identical for every family. Apple’s current U.S. guidance explains those qualifications.
Ask for an age-rating exception if that is the block
If Screen Time prevents access because an app is rated above the allowed level, ask the parent or guardian to review an app exception. Apple documents a child request and an adult decision flow for apps above the configured rating; an approved exception can also be removed later. This is distinct from asking to buy or download an otherwise permitted app. See Apple’s app-exception guidance.

If app installation itself is disabled in Screen Time, an age-rating exception will not resolve that separate restriction. The parent or guardian managing Screen Time must review the installation setting. Apple lists controls for installing and deleting apps, in-app purchases, and app ratings in its App Store restrictions instructions.
For a school-required app, check school distribution
Some apps or content distributed by a school are treated differently from a child’s personal downloads when the child’s account was created using Apple Account for Students. Apple says Ask to Buy does not apply to that school-distributed content, but it can still apply to personal purchases outside the institution. Ask the teacher or school IT administrator whether the app is supplied through the school; this is not a general way to install personal apps without approval. Alternative app distribution is not a general bypass
Apple documents alternative app distribution for Brazil, Japan, and countries or regions in the European Union. Eligibility depends on both the Apple Account’s country or region and the user’s physical location, and availability or features can vary by region. Apple also says Screen Time and parental controls continue to apply, including restrictions related to marketplaces and web distribution and age-rating exceptions. Changing marketplaces therefore does not provide a dependable or supported way around a family restriction.

What to do if the request or download does not work
- Ask to Buy request: Confirm that the request went to the family organizer or parent/guardian who can approve it. A decline means the item will not download.
- Installation blocked: Ask the adult managing Screen Time to check the app-installation restriction; approval for a purchase does not by itself change that setting.
- Age rating blocked: Ask the adult to review an exception for that app rather than treating the block as an Ask to Buy issue.
- School assignment: Ask school staff whether the app is distributed through the institution and whether your account is set up for that route.
- Alternative distribution: Check Apple’s region and location eligibility information, but do not assume it overrides parental controls.
