You can follow profiles and Pages to see their public updates, set certain notification preferences—including SMS alerts for comments on your own posts—and choose alerts for a Page’s live videos. Which alerts appear can depend on the account and current interface.
Set SMS alerts for comments on your own posts
Facebook Help Center documents text-message notifications for selected notification types. One example is a text when someone comments on your status updates and posts. This is an alert about activity on your content, not a general alert whenever another person publishes a post.
- Open Facebook and select your profile picture.
- Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Notifications.
- Expand the notification type you want to change and turn on SMS, if that option is available.
Facebook also says you can limit how many Facebook texts you receive or restrict them during certain hours through Mobile settings. Available choices may differ by account or interface; check the current options shown in your settings.
Follow a profile or Page to see public updates
Facebook describes following a profile or Page as a way to see that person’s or Page’s public updates. Following is useful if you want those updates in Facebook, but Facebook’s description does not promise a push or text notification for every ordinary post.

To follow, open the profile or Page and select Follow if the option is available. Following and receiving an alert are separate things: use Facebook’s notification settings to check which delivery options your account offers, and do not assume that following alone guarantees an alert for each post.
Choose notifications for a Page’s live videos
Facebook documents a specific notification control for live broadcasts from a Page. Open the Page, select Following, open Options below the cover photo, choose Live video, and select the notification option you want. Facebook lists All notifications, Highlights, and Off.

For a person or Page whose live video or replay you are viewing, Facebook also describes selecting Follow and then Notifications to be notified the next time that person or Page starts a live broadcast. These controls concern live video; they are not evidence of alerts for every regular post.
What to expect for groups and ordinary posts
The Facebook Help Center instructions reviewed here do not establish a setting that alerts you for every new post in every group. They also do not establish a universal per-person alert for every ordinary post. Group membership, following a profile or Page, and the specific notification controls visible in your account are not interchangeable guarantees.

Facebook’s Help Center has a Page-settings index that points to Page notification guidance, but the available instructions do not specify the complete steps or every supported alert type. For a particular Page or group, inspect its current in-app notification controls rather than relying on a universal menu path or assuming every post can trigger an alert.
If an expected alert does not arrive
- Confirm the event type. SMS examples include comments on your own status updates and posts. They do not establish an SMS alert for someone else’s ordinary post.
- Check the delivery option. Reopen Settings & privacy > Settings > Notifications and verify the relevant type and SMS option, if available. For mobile push notifications, check the controls Facebook currently shows for your account and device.
- Check message limits and quiet hours. Facebook says Mobile settings can restrict Facebook texts by time or quantity.
- For live video, check the live-video setting. A Page set to Off will not send the live-video notifications described by Facebook; choose All notifications or Highlights if those options suit you.
- Do not treat following as a delivery guarantee. It helps you see public updates but does not, by itself, promise an alert for every post.
