You can’t look up or generate a valid live Kahoot! PIN yourself: ask the host for the code currently shown on their screen, or use the join link or QR code they share. A live PIN is tied to that session, expires when the game ends, and Kahoot! says its validity window is up to 8 hours—not a guarantee that it will work for that long.
Where to get a current live Kahoot! PIN
The host creates the live session and provides its PIN. Kahoot! does not offer a public directory where participants can search for active game codes. If a code you found online or received earlier fails, ask the host to confirm the PIN currently displayed for the game you are meant to join. Kahoot! explains how PINs work, including that a live PIN expires when the game ends.

- Enter the PIN: Go to kahoot.it or open the Kahoot! app, choose Join, and enter the current code.
- Open the join link or scan the QR code: These routes avoid typing the PIN, but they do not bypass any security checks the host has enabled.
Depending on the host’s settings, you may also need to provide a nickname or other identifier, or complete a verification step. Kahoot!’s joining instructions describe the available routes.

Why a live PIN expires—and what the 8-hour window means
A live PIN belongs to a particular game session, not permanently to a kahoot. Kahoot!’s Help & Resource Center says a live PIN expires when the game ends and gives a validity window of up to 8 hours for live game PINs and QR codes. The session ending is the key condition: the 8-hour window is not a promise that a code remains usable for eight hours, and an ended or replaced session requires the host to share access to the current one. Live game PINs and assignment PINs are different
Check what kind of activity you were invited to before treating a code as expired. A live game runs in real time, so its PIN is associated with that session. A self-paced assignment has a host-set deadline; its PIN remains valid until that deadline. Kahoot!’s PIN guidance and its assignment instructions explain the distinction.

Fix a Kahoot! PIN that isn’t working
- Check the digits. Re-enter the PIN carefully, making sure you did not transpose or omit a number.
- Confirm it is the current code. Ask the host to check the PIN on the live-session screen and send it again if needed.
- Ask whether the session ended or restarted. An old PIN may belong to a game that is no longer active; a restarted session can require a new code.
- Check whether joining is locked. The host may have stopped new participants from entering. Ask whether they can allow you to join.
- Try the host’s current link or QR code. This avoids a typing error, but it does not override host settings such as 2-Step Join.
- If the session is active and the PIN is correct, check your connection. Follow Kahoot!’s official connection troubleshooting steps.
A link or QR code is a more convenient way to enter, not a workaround for a host’s access controls. When 2-Step Join is enabled, you must still complete that verification. Kahoot! describes the extra step.
If you’re hosting and need to share the PIN
- Sign in to Kahoot! and open the kahoot you want to run.
- Choose Host live, select the game mode and settings, and start the session.
- Share the PIN displayed on your host screen, or give participants the join link or QR code.
Share the code directly with the intended players rather than posting it publicly; Kahoot! warns that public PIN sharing can attract unwanted players or bots. Its PIN guidance and hosting and connection guidance cover session access and joining.
