In Selenium Python, call driver.get_screenshot_as_base64(). It captures the current window and returns a Base64-encoded screenshot as a string:
image_b64 = driver.get_screenshot_as_base64()
Use that string for transport or embedding. Selenium documents the returned value as Base64; it does not promise that the string already includes a data:image/png;base64, prefix.
Choose the Selenium screenshot method that matches your output
Selenium exposes separate methods for a window, an element, raw PNG bytes and a saved PNG file. Choosing the right one avoids unnecessary Base64 conversions.
| Need | Python API | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Current browser window as Base64 text | driver.get_screenshot_as_base64() |
Base64 string |
| Current browser window as binary data | driver.get_screenshot_as_png() |
PNG bytes |
| Current browser window saved to disk | driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png") or driver.get_screenshot_as_file("screenshot.png") |
Boolean success result and a PNG file |
| One element as Base64 text | element.screenshot_as_base64 |
Base64 string for that element |
The driver method is for the current window. For a single element, use the element property instead of calling the driver method.

Set up a runnable Selenium Python script
Install Selenium
Install Selenium in the environment where the script will run:
python -m pip install selenium
Create a browser driver in the normal way for your deployment, then navigate to the page before capturing. The example below uses Selenium’s Python API and always closes the browser with quit().
Capture the current window as Base64
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
url = "https://example.com"
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get(url)
WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(
lambda d: d.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, "body")
)
image_b64 = driver.get_screenshot_as_base64()
print(f"Base64 characters: {len(image_b64)}")
finally:
driver.quit()
image_b64 is ordinary text containing the encoded screenshot. The screenshot is taken from the current browser state, so any navigation, viewport size, zoom, cookies, dialogs or open overlays at that moment affect the result.
Embed the Base64 screenshot in HTML
For an HTML image, construct a data URL explicitly:
html_img_src = "data:image/png;base64," + image_b64
html = f'<img alt="Selenium screenshot" src="{html_img_src}">'
The data:image/png;base64, portion is an application-level prefix. Selenium’s API description establishes that the method returns a Base64-encoded screenshot, not that it returns a complete data URL. Keep the prefix separate in your code so the distinction is clear.

Never insert untrusted Base64 or attributes into HTML without applying the escaping and sanitisation rules required by your application. A data URL is convenient for a small self-contained document, but it increases the size of the HTML and keeps the image in memory.
Decode the string when the next step needs PNG bytes
Use Python’s standard-library Base64 decoder when an API, object store or image library expects binary data:
import base64
png_bytes = base64.b64decode(image_b64)
with open("screenshot.png", "wb") as output:
output.write(png_bytes)
If you only need a file, skip the text round trip and call driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png"). If you need an in-memory upload, get_screenshot_as_png() directly supplies PNG bytes:
png_bytes = driver.get_screenshot_as_png()
# For example, pass png_bytes to an HTTP client or binary storage SDK.
Capture one element as Base64
Locate the element first, then read its screenshot_as_base64 property:
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
url = "https://example.com"
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get(url)
card = WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(
lambda d: d.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "main")
)
element_b64 = card.screenshot_as_base64
finally:
driver.quit()
This is different from driver.get_screenshot_as_base64(): the element property requests a screenshot of that element, while the driver method requests the current window.

Use the captured value in common workflows
Return JSON from a service
import json
payload = {"image_base64": image_b64}
print(json.dumps(payload))
Base64 is text, so it can travel in JSON, message queues and form fields. Make sure the receiver knows whether it expects the bare Base64 value or a complete data URL. Do not add the data-URL prefix unless the receiving interface expects it.
Write a data-URL file for a quick preview
with open("preview.html", "w", encoding="utf-8") as output:
output.write(
'
'
)
Keep binary data binary
When the next system accepts bytes, prefer get_screenshot_as_png(). It avoids the Base64 expansion and the decode step. Use Base64 when the transport is text-oriented or when an inline HTML representation is the goal.

Java Selenium equivalent
Java uses the TakesScreenshot interface and requests the Base64 output type:
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
String imageBase64 = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.BASE64);
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
The Java documentation describes screenshot capture for W3C-conformant WebDriver and WebElement implementations. For a non-conformant implementation it is best effort, so do not promise identical screenshot scope across every browser driver.
Timing, page state and capture reliability
Wait for the content you actually need
A successful screenshot call does not mean that asynchronous content has finished rendering. Wait for a meaningful element, state or condition before calling the screenshot method. A short explicit wait for the target element is usually more useful than an arbitrary sleep.

Set the browser state before capture
- Navigate to the final URL first.
- Apply the required window size, zoom and theme before the call.
- Dismiss dialogs or consent prompts when your test requires a clean page.
- Scroll or interact with the page when the target content is revealed only after those actions.
- Capture the element after it is present and visible if the element API is your target.
Understand what is being captured
The documented Python driver method captures the current window. Selenium’s API reference does not establish a universal full-page result across browsers. If your requirement is a complete page image, verify the behavior of the specific browser and driver combination you deploy instead of assuming that a window screenshot includes content outside the current viewport.

The value is empty or the call fails
- Cause: the driver was closed, navigation failed or the browser session was not created successfully. Fix: create the driver before navigation, keep the session open through the capture, and inspect the original WebDriver exception.
- Cause: the page is still loading the target content. Fix: wait for a specific element or application state rather than capturing immediately after
get(). - Cause: a modal dialog or browser-level prompt blocks interaction. Fix: handle the prompt before taking the screenshot.
The HTML image is broken
- Confirm that the value is the bare Base64 string and that the prefix is exactly
data:image/png;base64,. - Do not use a JPEG or WebP MIME type for a PNG returned by these Selenium methods.
- Check that serialization has not inserted whitespace, truncation or additional quotation marks into the value.
The screenshot shows the wrong content
- Verify the active window and current URL immediately before capture.
- Wait for the selector that identifies the desired content.
- For a component image, call
element.screenshot_as_base64instead of the driver method. - Record viewport and scroll state in your test logs so a changed browser configuration is visible.
The result is too large for a request
Base64 is larger than the original binary PNG and may exceed message or header limits. Send get_screenshot_as_png() as a binary body, save the file and upload it, or choose a transport designed for larger payloads. Do not put a large screenshot in an HTTP header.
Performance and operational considerations
Screenshot capture is synchronous from your script’s perspective: the call returns after the browser has produced the image. Rendering time, page complexity and image dimensions affect latency and memory use. Reuse a browser session when taking multiple related screenshots, but isolate sessions when test independence or security requires it.
Keep the Base64 string only as long as necessary. For a queue or API, define a maximum payload size, enforce timeouts around navigation and capture, and log metadata such as URL, viewport and capture time without logging the full image. Treat screenshots as potentially sensitive because they can contain account data, tokens displayed in the page or personal information.

If you need a screenshot API rather than a locally managed Selenium browser, ScreenshotNeo returns a clean image from one GET request. Its API accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

FAQ
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding that represents binary bytes as text. Anyone who receives the value can decode it, so protect screenshots with the same access controls and transport security as the original image.

Base64 length reflects the encoded PNG size. Different page content, viewport dimensions, compression results and element boundaries produce different binary images and therefore different string lengths.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 only encodes binary bytes as text; it provides no confidentiality.
Why can two valid captures have different Base64 lengths?
Different content, dimensions, compression and element boundaries change the underlying PNG size, so the encoded strings differ.
