In ordinary Survival play, player heads do not drop from mobs or blocks. You get one through Creative inventory, the pick block function, or the /give command. On Java Edition you can also make the head display a specific player’s skin by name. Bedrock Edition has a player head item too, but the named-skin method below is Java-only.
Why you cannot get a player head from normal Survival play
The Minecraft Wiki’s Player Head article lists three ways to obtain one: the Creative inventory, pick block, and the /give command. Nothing in ordinary Survival gameplay produces one, so if you are waiting for a drop, you will not get it. Commands are the practical route in both editions.
Java Edition: a head showing a named player’s skin
Java Edition’s item data lets you attach a profile to a player head, and the head then shows that account’s skin. Commands are needed for this, so first confirm that you have permission to run them.

Replace
PlayerNamewith the account name whose skin you want.@sgives the head to you. - Check the result. A player head should appear in your inventory showing that account’s skin. If the skin is missing or wrong, see the troubleshooting section below.
- If the command errors, check your version. The Minecraft Wiki notes that Java item data changed in 1.20.5 and that profile data was adjusted in 1.21.9. Many older tutorials use
SkullOwnerNBT syntax from before 1.20.5. Do not paste that form into a current version without confirming it is supported, and use the in-game command suggestions to check the current format.
Bedrock Edition: what works and what does not
Bedrock has a player head item, and its /give command accepts it. Microsoft Learn’s give command reference gives the general form as /give <player> <itemName> [amount] [data] [components], and the command requires cheats to be enabled.
The Java profile syntax above does not carry over. A third-party custom-head guide from Heads by Kalpe states that custom player textures do not work in Bedrock. In practice, a Bedrock player can get the standard player head item with /give, but cannot use the named-skin method.

Permissions and the achievement trade-off
Commands are controlled by a setting or a server permission:

- Java single-player: Allow Commands in the world options.
- Bedrock single-player: Allow Cheats.
- Multiplayer (either edition): depends on the permission level the server gives you.
Minecraft’s official commands guide states: “In multiplayer, you’ll need to have a high-enough permission level to be able to use commands.”

Enabling cheats in a Bedrock single-player world permanently prevents achievements in that world, even if you turn cheats off later. If you care about achievements in a world, create a separate world for head-making rather than enabling cheats in your main save.

Troubleshooting a head with the wrong skin or no skin
The Minecraft Wiki describes how the head handles skins, which explains most display problems:
Rank #4
- Minecraft Flippin' Figs can easily transform back and forth into 2 different figures over and over again!
- Lift the panels on the head of each collectible and lock them in place to discover a different figure in seconds!
- Ready to flip? These 3.75-in scale figures are perfect for fidgeting fun at any time!
- The designs of the Flippin' Figs stay true to the unique, pixelated world of Minecraft!
- Makes a great toy for video-game players and fans ages 6 years old and up!
- The skin is stored when the head is created. A head made earlier keeps the skin it was created with. Make a new head with the command to update the skin.
- Loading may need internet access. If the skin does not appear, check your connection and reload the world or relog.
- The client keeps a skin cache. An old skin may remain visible on your client after the account has changed its skin, so a newly made head may still show the old texture until the cache updates.
If the /give command fails on every attempt, the most likely cause is the permission setting or the game version, not the command itself. Check the setting for your edition first.
