To read the bytes of a PDF that a logged-in browser session requests, wait for the specific network response before triggering the download, then call HTTPResponse.buffer(). Keep the wait and the request in the same Puppeteer page and browser context that established authentication. This captures the server’s existing PDF response; it is different from page.pdf(), which creates a new PDF from the rendered page.
The reliable pattern
A session-generated PDF usually appears only after a click, form submission, or script runs inside an authenticated page. Register a narrowly filtered page.waitForResponse() first, trigger that action, check the HTTP result, and then await response.buffer().

await browser.close();Replace the sample path and selector with values from the target application. The listener is deliberately created before the click: a fast response can otherwise arrive before a later wait is attached. If the site opens a new tab, submits a form, or redirects, observe the response on the page that actually emits the PDF request.
Why page.pdf() is not the same thing
page.pdf() prints the current DOM into a newly generated PDF and returns a Promise<Uint8Array>. It does not retrieve the bytes from a PDF URL that the page requested. Puppeteer uses print CSS media by default:

Keep authentication in the right context
Cookies established during login belong to the browser or browser context. Continue from that same context when requesting a session-dependent URL:

A site may also require a short-lived token, referrer, custom header, or a particular sequence of requests. A PDF URL copied from the address bar can therefore return a login page or an authorization error when used outside the browser. Treat the target site’s authentication contract as authoritative.

Page-level cookie methods are deprecated in favor of browser- or BrowserContext-level APIs. Never print session cookies, authorization headers, or signed URLs to application logs.

Waiting for any response is fragile on a busy page. Match a stable endpoint, report identifier, or other known marker and, where appropriate, the PDF MIME type:

}, {timeout: 30000});If the endpoint redirects, the response you need may be the final URL rather than the first URL. Confirm the actual URL, status, and headers in a safe diagnostic log. If the application uses a new page, wait for that page and attach the response listener there.

Validate bytes before handing them to a PDF library
A completed request is not necessarily a successful document. HTTP errors such as 404 or 503 can still complete at the request-event level. Check response.ok() (or the explicit status), then inspect the content type and expected PDF signature before parsing:

}HTTPResponse.buffer() resolves to a Node.js Buffer containing the response body. Puppeteer notes that the browser can re-encode the buffer based on headers or heuristics. If a downstream parser reports corruption, preserve the original response headers and inspect the first bytes before assuming the server generated an invalid PDF.

Timeout waiting for a response
- Cause: The predicate does not match the real endpoint, the click did not occur, or the request was sent by another page.
- Fix: Attach the wait before the action, verify the selector, and temporarily log response URLs and statuses (never secrets). For a popup, capture the new page and observe it.
401 or 403
- Cause: The session expired, cookies are in another context, or the endpoint requires a token, referrer, or request sequence.
- Fix: Re-authenticate in the same context, verify non-sensitive cookie names and domains, and reproduce the exact in-browser flow. Do not move the URL to an unauthenticated HTTP client unless the application explicitly supports that method.
200 response containing HTML
- Cause: A login page, access-denied page, or application error was returned with a successful HTTP status.
- Fix: Require the PDF content type and check the
%PDF-signature before parsing.
Wrong PDF captured
- Cause: The predicate matched a prefetch, an old report, or another request to the same host.
- Fix: Match the exact path, query identifier, or response header that identifies the requested report. Clear stale UI state and trigger only one download at a time.
Request hangs after enabling interception
- Cause: An intercepted request was never continued, fulfilled, or aborted.
- Fix: Do not enable interception merely to observe a response;
waitForResponse()already does that. If interception is required for another purpose, resolve every intercepted request.
Malformed output from buffer()
- Cause: Browser re-encoding, a proxy transformation, or an HTML error body saved with a PDF extension.
- Fix: Check status, headers, and the first bytes; compare the resulting length and parser diagnostics with a direct browser download.
Timing, reliability, and resource considerations
Use a bounded timeout and clean up the browser in a finally block in production. Wait for the UI state that proves the action is ready, but do not add arbitrary delays when a response or selector wait is available. A narrow predicate reduces accidental matches on pages that make many requests. For large reports, keep the buffer in memory only as long as needed, then stream or write it to controlled storage; protect the resulting file because it may contain personal or confidential data.

Pin and review your Puppeteer version as APIs change. The official API pages accessed on September 29, 2026 displayed version labels 25.10.0 for HTTPResponse.buffer() and 25.12.0 for Page, Page.pdf(), and BrowserContext.cookies(); labels and deprecation status can change.

Can I reuse the URL in a separate Axios or fetch request?
Only if the target application explicitly accepts that authentication method and you can safely reproduce its required cookies, headers, tokens, and request sequence. Otherwise, keep retrieval in the Puppeteer context that holds the session.

What does a PDF signature check detect?
Checking for the leading %PDF- bytes catches common cases where an HTML login or error page was returned instead of a PDF; it does not prove every PDF feature is valid.
Does buffering preserve the exact server bytes?
Puppeteer documents a response-body Buffer but cautions that the browser may re-encode it based on headers or heuristics, so inspect headers and bytes when exact fidelity matters.
