To get a Norwegian IP address, connect to a VPN server located in Norway. Websites that rely on IP geolocation will then see the VPN server’s public address rather than the one assigned by your regular internet connection. This changes your apparent network location; it does not make you a Norwegian resident or guarantee access to any particular website or streaming catalog.
What you need to connect from a Norwegian IP address
You need a VPN service that currently offers a Norway server and an app for your device. You do not need a special physical product. A VPN-capable router is optional equipment for routing multiple devices through a VPN, but it still needs a VPN service with a Norwegian endpoint.
VPN providers document the basic country-server method: choose Norway in the app and connect. For examples, see Proton VPN’s Norway server page, NordVPN’s Norway server page, and ExpressVPN’s Norway server page. Server availability and provider features can change, so check the current country list and supported devices before choosing a service.

- Choose a VPN with Norway servers. Check that Norway is listed for your device and plan. If you need to use a particular website, remember that having a Norwegian endpoint does not establish that the website will accept it.
- Install the provider’s official app and sign in. Use the app for your operating system or device. Provider support pages describe selecting Norway from a location list or map; for example, see Proton VPN’s NRK support instructions and NordVPN’s server connection instructions.
- Select Norway and connect. Wait for the app to show that the connection is active before opening the site you want to use.
- Check the public IP’s apparent country. Use an IP lookup service to see whether the address geolocates to Norway. IP databases may disagree, and a successful check does not prove that a particular website will accept the VPN address.
What a Norwegian IP can—and cannot—change
A VPN routes your internet traffic through another network operator. For destinations that use IP geolocation, the public-facing address becomes the VPN endpoint’s address. The site may still use other signals, such as account details, cookies, device location permissions, or fraud checks. An IP address alone does not prove residency, identity, or eligibility.

A VPN can limit some forms of observation on a local network, but it does not make you anonymous or prevent all tracking. Logins, cookies, browser fingerprinting, GPS permissions, and payment information may still identify or locate you.
Why NRK TV may not work with a VPN
NRK’s own guidance says that geographic rights contracts limit where, how often, and for how long programs can be shown. It says it cannot permit VPN use because it cannot verify whether traffic comes from Norway or abroad, and advises users to disable the VPN to access all NRK TV content. That means obtaining a Norwegian VPN address is not a reliable way to gain access to NRK programming.

NRK also describes a route for eligible Norwegian residents traveling in the EEA: log in and confirm Norwegian residence with BankID or MinID. Outside the EEA, NRK says only a limited selection is available. Its guidance and troubleshooting are on NRK’s English help page.
If you are physically in Norway but NRK thinks you are abroad
NRK lists a foreign IP address, an active VPN, outdated device software, or an ISP geolocation error as possible causes. Follow NRK’s troubleshooting guidance. It also describes adding specified NRK domains to a VPN exception list. This sends that traffic outside the encrypted VPN tunnel, so the VPN is effectively off for those requests; it is not a way to conceal VPN use or guarantee access.

How to compare VPN options for a Norway connection
The examples below describe what the providers’ own pages say, not independent tests or a ranking. Their inventories and features may change.
| Provider | What its cited pages state | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Its Norway page lists Norway servers and states speeds up to 10 Gbps; that is a provider-stated technical ceiling, not an independently measured result. Its NRK support page says streaming services require a paid plan and describes connecting to a Plus server in Norway. | Current plan eligibility, device support, Norway availability, privacy evidence and audit scope, renewal terms, and whether the intended service accepts the endpoint. |
| NordVPN | Its Norway page advertises more than 80 Norway servers, a vendor-reported inventory count that can change. Its support page lists Oslo among dedicated IP locations. | Shared versus dedicated address, any additional cost, device support, current availability, privacy evidence and audit scope, and intended-service compatibility. |
| ExpressVPN | Its Norway page describes connecting to a Norway server to get a Norwegian IP address. | Current Norway availability, device and protocol support, price and renewal terms, privacy evidence and audit scope, and intended-service compatibility. |
Compare services on the same practical criteria: Norway availability, support for your devices, independent privacy and security evidence, performance from your location, renewal and refund terms, and whether you need a shared or dedicated IP. Provider speed ceilings and server counts are not comparative test results.

Common problems and practical checks
- The IP lookup shows another country: reconnect, or try another Norway endpoint if your provider offers one, then check again. Geolocation databases can be inaccurate.
- A site still treats you as being elsewhere: close and reopen the site or app, and check whether browser location permissions or account settings affect the result. These checks do not bypass a site’s restrictions.
- A streaming service blocks the connection: the service may apply checks beyond IP location, or its licensing rules may restrict VPN traffic. Provider support claims do not establish that a VPN will work with the service.
- You are concerned about privacy: understand that a VPN shifts traffic handling to the VPN operator and does not prevent tracking through accounts, cookies, device permissions, or other identifiers.
