To get a Japanese IP address, connect to a VPN server in Japan; choose Tokyo if you specifically need a Tokyo location. NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN each document Japan server options, but the available evidence does not establish that one is faster or more reliable than the others—or support a claim that these VPNs were independently tested.
How to get a Japanese IP address
- Install a VPN app. Choose a VPN service and install its app on your device.
- Sign in and open the location picker. The app may label it “Locations,” “Servers,” or a similar term.
- Select Japan, then Tokyo if available. Connect to the selected server. A VPN routes your connection through its server, so websites see the public-facing IP associated with that exit location rather than your usual connection’s IP.
- Check the apparent location if needed. Use a reputable IP lookup service separately and treat its result as an observation of the IP location, not proof that a particular website or service will work.
Provider setup instructions: NordVPN’s Japan servers and Tokyo server selection; Surfshark’s Japan servers; and ExpressVPN’s Japan VPN.
What the three providers document
| Provider | Documented setup and locations | Provider-reported server count |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Select Japan on the map or from the country list; its Tokyo page explains choosing Tokyo from the Japan locations. | 130+ servers in Japan, according to NordVPN’s page accessed in 2026. This is a provider-reported count, not an independent audit. |
| Surfshark | Search for Japan in the app and select Tokyo. | 80 servers in Tokyo, according to Surfshark’s page accessed in 2026. This is a provider-reported count, not an independent audit. |
| ExpressVPN | Select a Japan server location. Its pages name Tokyo, Osaka, Shibuya, and Yokohama. | Not stated on the reviewed pages. |
Sources: NordVPN Japan servers, NordVPN Tokyo servers, Surfshark Japan servers, ExpressVPN Japan VPN, and ExpressVPN server locations. The counts are changeable provider statements; they are not directly comparable measures of speed, quality, reliability, privacy, or capacity.

Does a Japanese IP guarantee access to a service?
No. A Japanese IP address indicates that your VPN connection exits through a Japan location, but it does not guarantee access to a streaming catalog, website, or other geo-restricted service. Services may detect or block VPN connections, and availability can vary. The provider pages cited here explain how to connect; they do not establish successful access to any particular service.

What a real VPN comparison would need to test
The providers’ setup pages establish that Japan or Tokyo locations are offered, not which service performs best. Server counts alone cannot establish performance. A meaningful head-to-head comparison would disclose:
