To create one thumbnail for each website URL in Airtable, store each address in a URL field, capture the page with a screenshot service, and save the resulting image in an attachment field. Airtable’s URL preview extension is different: it supports selected services such as YouTube and Google Drive, not arbitrary websites, and a site can prevent its page from being embedded. Airtable’s URL preview documentation describes those limits.
Choose a screenshot or a live preview
A live preview displays content from a supported site; it is not an image of any arbitrary web page. A thumbnail made with a screenshot workflow is a generated image artifact: it captures the page at a point in time and can be stored as an Airtable attachment.

Airtable’s button field can use the “Preview URL” action to open the URL preview extension for a record with a configured URL field. That opens a preview where supported; it does not generate a screenshot of an arbitrary website.
Set up the Airtable base
- Create one record per website. Add a URL field, for example, “Website URL,” and enter the page address to capture in each record.
- Add a destination for the image. Create an attachment field, for example, “Thumbnail.” The screenshot workflow can save each generated image to this field.
- Choose how to run capture. Use an external screenshot service workflow or API that reads each record’s URL, captures the page, and writes the image file back to the matching record. This is a documented option, not a guarantee that every site will capture successfully.
The precise automation or script configuration depends on the service and Airtable setup you choose. The cited workflow does not establish current service pricing, quotas, plan eligibility, batch size, or a universal solution for sites that block automated capture, so verify those details with the provider before building around them.

Run captures and check the results
After connecting the capture workflow, run it against a small set of records first. Confirm that each output is attached to the intended record and that the captured page is the one you meant to thumbnail. Then expand to the rest of the URL list. This staged approach helps reveal incorrect URLs, failed captures, or mismatched record updates before they affect the full base.
- Keep the source URL in its own field so it can be corrected and captured again.
- Review records with no attachment or an unexpected image; do not assume every external page permits automated capture.
- If a screenshot needs updating after a site changes, run the capture workflow again for that record. A screenshot is a point-in-time image, not a live page.
Use the screenshot as an attachment or a public image
An attachment is useful for viewing the thumbnail in Airtable. It is not necessarily a permanent public image URL. Airtable says attachment download URLs remain active for at least two hours and that the exact window may change; it also says, “Using Airtable as a CDN has been and continues to be discouraged in line with this change.” See Airtable’s attachment URL behavior documentation. If another site or system needs a durable public image link, use suitable external hosting or another stable sharing arrangement rather than treating an attachment download URL as permanent.

For automated emails, Airtable can display images that already exist as attachments or at publicly hosted URLs. It does not natively render an Airtable interface, dashboard, or view into an image.
