Connect the AI agent to a browser tool, have it open the URL and capture the page, then deliver the resulting PNG as a saved file, inline image, or HTTP response. The model does not render a website on its own: the browser automation does the rendering and screenshot capture.
Choose the capture scope and delivery method
Before asking an agent to capture a page, decide what the recipient needs. A viewport screenshot contains only what is visible in the browser window. A full-page screenshot captures the scrollable page. An element screenshot isolates a specific part of the page. Playwright MCP supports these scopes, but a full-page capture and a targeted-element capture are separate choices. See Playwright MCP screenshot options.
| Need | Capture and delivery |
|---|---|
| Review the visible page | Viewport screenshot; save as a named PNG or return the image inline. |
| Review content below the fold | Full-page screenshot; save or return its image data. |
| Review one component | Target that element by ref or selector; do not combine it with full-page capture. |
| Let the agent inspect appearance | Return the screenshot inline, or provide a saved file the agent can access. |
| Send an image to an HTTP caller | Return screenshot bytes in the response and set Content-Type: image/png. |
Use a page snapshot or accessibility structure to locate controls and understand page content; use a screenshot to judge visual layout. After navigation or interaction changes the page, take a fresh snapshot before relying on element refs, since page state and refs can change.
Ask the agent to capture a PNG
A clear instruction identifies the URL, desired scope, filename, and expected delivery. For example:

Open
https://example.comin the browser. Wait until the page is ready, then capture the full page as a PNG namedexample-full.png. Return the saved file and tell me its final path.
For a viewport shot, replace “the full page” with “the visible viewport.” For a component, name the element or ask the agent to inspect a fresh page snapshot and target the relevant element. A readiness instruction is a request, not a guarantee that a fixed delay will work on every site; pages may need interaction or more specific readiness conditions.
Use Playwright CLI for a local file
The Playwright CLI workflow is: open the URL, interact if needed, then run the screenshot command. Its screenshot documentation says the output format is inferred from the filename extension and defaults to PNG; using a .png suffix makes the intended format explicit. The CLI also documents full-page, element-target, and high-resolution options. Check the current Playwright CLI screenshot command reference for exact flags accepted by your installed version.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Ask your coding agent to use the Playwright CLI on the supplied URL, or start the browser session using the CLI workflow documented in the Playwright CLI quick start.
- Navigate to the URL and wait for the page state you intend to capture. If the page needs consent, login, or other interaction, have the agent inspect the page and complete the required steps first.
- Run the CLI screenshot command with a filename ending in
.png. Add the documented full-page option for a full-scroll capture, or use the documented element target when capturing one element. - Return the saved file from the workspace to the caller; report its path so the caller can retrieve it.
High-resolution or device-pixel output can help with visual inspection, but its image pixels do not map one-to-one to CSS-pixel mouse coordinates. If a later automation step uses coordinates, treat the screenshot’s scale as part of that coordinate conversion.
Use Playwright MCP when the agent works through tools
In a Playwright MCP session, have the agent navigate to the page and call browser_take_screenshot after it reaches the intended state. The tool supports a target element ref or selector, image type, filename, full-page capture, and scale. PNG is used when no other type is implied. Without a filename, the image is returned inline for the model to see; with a filename, it can be saved into the workspace. Full-page capture cannot be combined with a target.
- Ask the agent to open the requested URL and inspect a current page snapshot.
- Have it interact with the page as needed, then take another snapshot if navigation or interaction changed the page state.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotwith the appropriate scope. Specify PNG or a.pngfilename if the PNG format must be unambiguous. - Return the inline image to the requesting system, or provide the saved workspace file, depending on what the caller accepts.
See the Playwright MCP screenshot documentation for the tool’s current parameters. A screenshot is visual evidence, not an interaction handle: use refs or selectors from the page structure to interact with controls.

Capture and save a PNG with Playwright’s API
For a local Playwright runtime, navigate to the target page and call page.screenshot with a PNG path. Set fullPage: true when the entire scrollable page is needed. The example below is a minimal Node.js script; install Playwright and its browser runtime according to the official setup instructions for your environment.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The load event is an example navigation condition, not proof that every site’s dynamic content is ready. If the page depends on client-side rendering, wait for a relevant selector or another site-specific condition before capture. Playwright’s API documentation also allows screenshot bytes to be returned instead of writing to a path: Playwright screenshot API documentation source.
Return PNG bytes from an HTTP endpoint
Saving a screenshot and returning it to an HTTP caller are different steps. A server can capture the image as bytes and send those bytes as the response body with Content-Type: image/png. Cloudflare’s documented Browser Run example demonstrates this hosted-browser pattern: launch a browser, navigate, capture, and return the image response. It is an example of an integration shape, not a comparison of service price or performance. See Cloudflare Browser Run’s Playwright documentation.

For any HTTP implementation, ensure the response body contains the actual PNG bytes, not a local file path or a JSON string describing the image. The caller should receive an image response with the PNG content type; if your application instead returns JSON, encode the bytes explicitly and document that contract for the caller.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common output problems
- The image stops at the first screen: the capture was viewport-only. Request full-page capture, and do not combine it with an element target in Playwright MCP.
- The file is not PNG: use a
.pngfilename or explicitly set the image type to PNG. Check that the HTTP response also declaresContent-Type: image/png. - The caller receives a path but no image: a saved local file is not automatically an HTTP response or an attachment to an agent message. Return the file through the caller’s supported file mechanism, or send the screenshot bytes in the response body.
- The page is blank or incomplete: the screenshot may have been taken before its content was ready, or the page may require interaction. Use an appropriate wait condition, inspect a fresh snapshot, complete needed interactions, and capture again.
- An element target fails or points at the wrong element: refresh the page snapshot after navigation or state changes, then use a current ref or selector. Avoid stale refs.
- Mouse coordinates no longer line up with a high-resolution image: device-pixel scale changes the relationship between image pixels and CSS pixels. Use CSS-pixel capture when coordinate matching matters, or convert coordinates using the capture scale.
Choose local or hosted execution
Local Playwright CLI and API runs make the browser workflow part of your own development environment; MCP exposes screenshot capture directly as an agent tool. A hosted browser runtime instead performs capture remotely and can return image bytes over HTTP. The right fit depends on whether the caller needs a workspace file, an inline image for the agent, or a direct HTTP image response. The documentation cited here describes these capabilities; it does not establish comparative fidelity, compatibility, speed, or price across implementations.
