To create a page-specific social media preview with APITemplate.io, build an image template, enable its Direct URL option, and pass values for named template elements in the generated URL. Add that URL to the page’s og:image metadata. APITemplate.io also offers a REST API for applications that prefer a POST request and structured data.
How the Direct URL method works
Direct URL generation turns a reusable APITemplate.io image template into an image URL. The URL’s query parameters set dynamic template elements, such as a headline or background image. Put the resulting URL in the page’s Open Graph image tag so a social platform can use it when the page is shared.
APITemplate.io’s Direct URL documentation says each page can have a unique preview image by changing the query parameters. This approach is useful when you want to generate a share image from page data without first making a separate API request from your application.

- Create an image template. In APITemplate.io, create a template and use its visual editor to lay out the image. Add the text, images, and other elements you want in the preview. Name elements that need dynamic values clearly, for example
headlineorbackground. Choose a preset size or enter custom dimensions. - Enable Direct URL. Open the template’s Direct URL tab, create an auth code, and configure its quota and expiration before saving. Keep the auth code under your control: anyone who can use the URL may be able to generate images within the settings you configured.
- Check the element properties. Use the Direct URL tab’s URL-generation aid to see the available element names and properties. Common examples include
headline.textfor text andbackground.srcfor an image source.
Build a dynamic image URL
The documented URL pattern is:
https://rest.apitemplate.io/v2/create-image-url/{template_id}?auth={auth_code}&{element.property}={value}Replace the template ID and auth code with those for your template. Then provide query parameters for the named elements you want to change. For example, a text element named headline can receive headline.text=Summer+Sale. Encode spaces and other reserved characters correctly; the plus sign represents a space in a query string. For image elements, pass the appropriate property, such as src, and a valid image URL.

Use the exact endpoint and parameter names shown in the current Direct URL documentation and in your template editor. An older APITemplate.io blog post refers to a past API base URL; the current Direct URL instructions use rest.apitemplate.io.
Add the generated image to the page
Place the generated image URL in the page’s HTML head as the Open Graph image value:

Add the tag through your site’s usual metadata mechanism so that it appears in the rendered page head. Give each page its own values when you need distinct previews.
Before publishing, inspect the rendered page and test its share preview with the intended platform’s own preview or debugging tool. Social platforms can fetch and cache metadata differently; the reviewed APITemplate.io documentation does not establish platform-specific refresh timing or crawler requirements. Check current requirements for the platforms you target rather than assuming one image size or cache rule applies everywhere.

When to use the REST API instead
Use the REST image API when your backend or application should submit structured data to a template, rather than embedding a Direct URL in page metadata. APITemplate.io documents a POST to /v2/create-image?template_id=... with an X-API-KEY header and JSON overrides for dynamic elements; the response includes a download_url. See the provider’s Image Template Editor documentation for the request details.
The Direct URL is a GET-style image URL with its own configured auth code. It is not the same request pattern as the authenticated REST POST. APITemplate.io also lists integrations including Zapier, Make, Bubble.io, Airtable, and n8n for workflow-based generation; see its first-image guide.
Cache behavior and practical checks
APITemplate.io says generated images are cached and regenerated when the query parameters change or the template is updated. Its Direct URL documentation does not state a cache lifetime, so do not assume a particular duration. If a preview appears stale, confirm the page is emitting the intended URL and values, then use the target platform’s preview tool to check what it currently fetches.
- Confirm the template ID, auth code, and element-property names match the template.
- Check that dynamic values are URL-encoded and image-source URLs are valid.
- Inspect the final page HTML head to ensure the expected
og:imagevalue is present. - Review the image itself and the target social platform’s current image guidance before relying on it in a live post.
