First identify the responsive widths in your site’s CSS: there is no universal set of widths, and Playwright does not automatically discover a site’s breakpoints. Test just below and above a breakpoint when you need to see how the layout changes.
Find the breakpoints to test
Inspect the site’s CSS for media queries and other responsive conditions, then make an explicit list of viewport widths. A breakpoint is a condition in the site’s own styling, not a standard device width that applies to every website. Include widths on both sides of a breakpoint to review the transition, rather than capturing only one representative mobile, tablet, or desktop size.
Playwright can configure a viewport and emulate device characteristics, but its documentation does not describe a method for discovering every breakpoint in arbitrary site CSS. See Playwright’s emulation documentation for viewport configuration and device emulation.
Capture screenshots at a list of widths with Playwright
The following Node.js example creates a fresh browser context at each requested viewport size, loads the page, and saves a viewport screenshot whose filename includes the dimensions. It assumes Node.js and Playwright are installed in the project.

The networkidle wait is a practical choice for pages that settle after network activity, not a guarantee that all content is ready. If the site continues making requests, use a more appropriate readiness condition, such as waiting for a visible selector that marks the content you need to inspect.
Choose viewport, device emulation, and screenshot scale
Set explicit viewport widths for CSS transitions
An explicit viewport list makes the coverage clear and repeatable. If a CSS condition changes at 768 pixels, for example, include widths immediately below and at or above that point to inspect both states. The example uses 767 and 768 pixels as an illustration; use the conditions found in your own styles.
Use device presets when device behavior matters
A viewport sweep tests width and height. Device emulation is useful when the behavior under review also depends on characteristics such as user agent or touch capability. Playwright supports device parameters and viewport overrides; its documentation notes that an explicit viewport can override a preset’s viewport. Use the width sweep for transparent breakpoint coverage, and add a device preset for device-specific behavior.

Choose viewport-only or full-page capture
The example sets fullPage: false, so each image shows the currently visible viewport. Set fullPage: true when reviewers need the entire scrollable page in one image. A full-page image is not the same review artifact as a viewport screenshot: choose based on whether the task is to inspect the visible layout at a breakpoint or the whole page.
Keep scale consistent
Playwright’s screenshot API supports CSS-pixel and device-pixel scaling. CSS scaling produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; device scaling uses device pixels and can make images larger on high-density displays. Use the same scale for the whole comparison set so image dimensions and visual comparisons remain consistent. Compare adjacent widths around each responsive condition. Look for horizontal overflow, clipped content, unexpected wrapping, and elements that overlap or disappear. These are review checks for the resulting images; screenshot capture itself does not determine whether a layout is correct.

Troubleshooting
The page is blank or incomplete
Check that the URL loads in the browser and that the page has finished rendering the content you want to inspect. A network-idle condition may not suit pages with persistent requests or delayed content. Wait for a relevant selector or use a deliberate delay if the page requires extra time.
A screenshot does not show the breakpoint state you expected
Check the actual media-query condition and the viewport dimensions used by the context. If using a device preset, verify whether an explicit viewport override is required. Make sure the test widths straddle the condition rather than testing only one side.
Images are different sizes across the set
Check both the viewport dimensions and the screenshot scale. Keep the chosen scale consistent, and use CSS scaling when you need one output pixel per CSS pixel.

The capture omits content farther down the page
That is expected for a viewport-only screenshot. Set fullPage: true for the full scrollable page, or keep viewport-only images when the goal is to assess the visible responsive layout.
