This works when you can build the document with React-pdf’s own PDF components and styles. It is not a drop-in renderer for arbitrary web pages or browser HTML/CSS. If the PDF must match an existing HTML template exactly, consider a hosted rendering API instead.
Choose a PDF approach before writing the route
The key choice is how the document is authored. React-pdf produces PDFs from its own React primitives, such as Document, Page, View and Text. Its layout model is purpose-built for PDFs; do not assume that ordinary HTML elements and browser CSS will render as they would in Chrome.
| Approach | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
@react-pdf/renderer in a Node.js Function |
Documents you can compose with React-pdf components and styles | You own the document layout and the function’s dependencies and resource use. |
| Hosted PDF rendering API | An existing HTML/CSS template, or a preference not to run and package a renderer in your function | You depend on an external service. Validate fidelity, privacy and data handling, latency, pricing and limits for your workload. |
Vercel documents PDFgen and PDF4.dev as services that can be called remotely for rendering. Those are vendor descriptions, not independent evidence of output quality. No neutral performance benchmark establishes that one of these approaches is faster or more reliable for every application.
Generate a PDF in a Next.js App Router route
Install React-pdf in the project, then create a Route Handler at app/api/invoice/route.tsx. The example below defines a small document, renders it on the server with React-pdf’s stream API, and returns a PDF response. It illustrates the implementation pattern; check the API and TypeScript types against your installed Next.js and React-pdf versions before deploying.

Request /api/invoice to receive the generated file. The example uses fixed sample invoice content; a real route should load and validate the requested record on the server, then pass the required data into the document. Keep authorization checks and secrets server-side. Do not accept an arbitrary record ID and return its document without checking that the requesting user may access it.
Adapt the document, not the runtime
- Use React-pdf’s document components and style system to represent the layout. HTML tags and browser CSS are not interchangeable with those primitives.
- For variable-length content, test page breaks, long text, tables, and headers or footers using representative documents. The retrieved documentation establishes server rendering and stream support, but does not establish the appearance of your particular document.
- If you add fonts or other assets, make them available to the server-side renderer and include their size in deployment planning. Avoid relying on files that exist only in a developer’s local environment.
- Choose the response disposition deliberately:
inlineasks browsers to display the PDF where supported;attachmentasks them to download it. Set a filename appropriate to the document.
Deploy on Vercel’s Node.js runtime
Vercel documents Node.js as the default Function runtime, with full Node.js API coverage. Explicitly setting export const runtime = 'nodejs' in the route makes the intended runtime clear. React-pdf has server-rendering support; still check the installed package and its dependencies for compatibility with your project’s versions and deployment bundle.

Do not casually switch a Node-dependent renderer to the Edge runtime. Vercel describes Edge as exposing only a subset of Node.js APIs. Its documentation lists 128 MB maximum memory and a requirement to begin sending a response within 25 seconds, while allowing streaming to continue after that initial response. These are platform limits, not a promise that a particular PDF will render within them.
Check bundle and execution constraints
- Vercel’s function-size documentation, last updated in 2025, lists a 250 MB maximum uncompressed size for a Node.js Function. The total includes bundled code and files, so renderer dependencies and font files matter.
- Memory and duration limits for Node.js Functions depend on plan and configuration. Check the current limits and the settings for the project rather than assuming one ceiling applies to every deployment.
- Vercel documents a read-only filesystem with writable
/tmpscratch space up to 500 MB. Treat that space as temporary, not durable storage; do not rely on it to preserve documents across invocations. - Inspect the deployed function bundle and test realistic documents. The limit figures are configuration ceilings, not PDF-generation performance measurements.
When a hosted renderer is a better fit
If your source of truth is an HTML/CSS page and the output needs browser-style rendering, a hosted renderer can move that rendering work outside the Vercel function. The application sends a request to the service and handles its PDF response. PDFgen and PDF4.dev describe this kind of workflow, but their service claims should be verified against your own templates and operating requirements.

Before making a service part of a production path, check whether its output preserves the fonts, page breaks, headers, footers and dynamic content your documents need. Review how it handles submitted data, where that data is processed, retention terms, authentication, request limits, pricing, service availability and failure responses. None of those properties should be inferred merely from the fact that a service accepts a rendering request.
If the requirement is specifically “no Chrome process running in my Vercel function,” both a React-pdf server route and a remote rendering service avoid launching Chrome in that function. They solve different layout problems: React-pdf requires a PDF-specific document model, while a hosted renderer may be suitable for HTML/CSS depending on its capabilities.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
There is no neutral benchmark in the cited documentation that compares React-pdf with hosted rendering services. Measure your own document sizes and request patterns rather than extrapolating from a sample invoice. Track render duration, errors, response size and function resource use, and test the longest and most complex documents you expect to serve.
- Control input size. Validate user-provided text and data, and avoid allowing requests to trigger unexpectedly large documents or asset downloads.
- Choose sync or async deliberately. A route that renders before responding is simple for short documents. If real workloads approach configured duration limits, consider a background job and a later download flow rather than assuming streaming removes all execution constraints.
- Plan for retries. A failed request may be retried by a client. Ensure document generation does not cause unintended duplicate side effects, such as issuing an invoice number twice.
- Protect sensitive documents. Authenticate requests, authorize access to each record, avoid leaking personal data in URLs or logs, and use suitable cache headers. The example uses
no-storeas a conservative default. - Budget for the actual service model. A self-hosted library uses your function resources; a hosted API introduces its own pricing, limits and operational dependency. Compare total cost and data-handling requirements for your expected volume, not just the cost of a single render.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Build fails on a Node module or API: confirm the route is configured for Node.js and inspect compatibility among the installed Next.js, React and React-pdf versions. Edge runtime restrictions can break Node-dependent packages.
- The response is an error page instead of a PDF: inspect the route’s server logs and status code before assuming the browser mishandled the file. Confirm rendering completed and that the response has
Content-Type: application/pdf. - The PDF is empty or missing content: verify that the document tree uses React-pdf components and that the server-side data passed to it is present. Browser HTML elements are not a substitute for React-pdf primitives.
- Fonts or images disappear after deployment: check asset paths and ensure the files are included and readable by the deployed function. Local-only paths may not exist in the deployment bundle.
- Deployment exceeds function size: inspect bundled dependencies and assets, including fonts, against Vercel’s uncompressed size limit. Remove unused dependencies or assets, or evaluate a hosted rendering approach.
- Requests time out or use too much memory: reproduce with a representative large document and inspect the applicable plan and function configuration. Reduce document or asset size, or move long-running work out of a synchronous request path.
- Output differs from the website: that is expected when rebuilding a web page in a PDF-specific layout system. If browser HTML/CSS fidelity is essential, evaluate a hosted renderer against the actual template.

Frequently asked questions
Does this approach work in the Next.js Pages Router?
The example is for the App Router. The central requirement is server-side rendering in a compatible Node.js environment; adapt the request and response handling to the router and versions in your project.
Can this generate PDFs from arbitrary website URLs?
The React-pdf route shown here creates a document from React-pdf components; it does not fetch and print an arbitrary webpage. For URL-based page capture, use a renderer designed for that input and validate its output and data-handling terms.
Does streaming guarantee a faster or smaller PDF response?
No. The API exposes stream output, but that alone does not establish a particular speed, memory profile or file size. Measure the route with the documents and deployment configuration you intend to use.
