To generate a PDF invoice from HTML, fill an HTML template with validated invoice data, add print-specific CSS, then render the page with a PDF-capable browser such as Chromium through Playwright or Puppeteer. Set the paper size and margins deliberately, wait for required assets, and check the resulting PDF for page breaks and clipped content. If the invoice is static HTML/CSS and does not need JavaScript, WeasyPrint is another option.
Choose a renderer that fits your invoice
The main decision is whether the invoice relies on JavaScript or browser-specific behavior. Browser automation is a natural fit for pages already built for the web; a dedicated HTML/CSS renderer can suit documents that are static once their data is filled in.

Compare browser fidelity, JavaScript needs, supported print CSS, deployment requirements, font and asset loading, page-break behavior, output features, and maintenance. The cited documentation does not establish a performance benchmark or cost comparison.
Build the invoice template for printing
Keep invoice data separate from presentation
Populate the template from validated invoice data. Keep calculations and source values out of styling logic so that changing a font, margin, or layout cannot change the amounts. Format and verify line totals, discounts, taxes, and the final total before rendering.

Add print-specific CSS
Design for the paper size and margins you intend to generate. Use readable type, control the width of item descriptions and numeric columns, and avoid relying on screen-only layout behavior. For multi-page item tables, use a table header that can repeat and try to keep each row together across page breaks; verify these behaviors in the renderer you select rather than assuming they are guaranteed.

}Change A4 to Letter if that is the paper size your workflow requires. The exact pagination effect of CSS rules depends on the renderer and document content.
Generate a PDF with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in the environment that will run the job. The example below assumes you already have a local invoice page at http://127.0.0.1:3000/invoices/INV-1042; replace that URL with the route that renders your invoice from stored or otherwise validated data.

})();Playwright’s page.pdf() returns a PDF buffer if you omit path; write that buffer to your storage or response as appropriate. The example uses Chromium because the documented PDF export interface is Chromium-only. Its PDF method uses print CSS media by default, so the print rules above apply.
When to wait for assets
Do not assume navigation completion means every invoice-specific dependency is ready. Wait for an application-level ready marker when data is loaded asynchronously, and ensure required images and fonts have loaded before exporting. Puppeteer’s guide specifically notes that its PDF method waits for fonts by default; still verify asset readiness in your own rendering flow.
Generate a PDF with Puppeteer
If your service already uses Puppeteer, the equivalent flow is to navigate to the invoice route and call page.pdf(). Install Puppeteer and its supported browser setup for your deployment, then use a route that identifies the invoice to render.

Use WeasyPrint for static HTML and CSS
WeasyPrint can render HTML and CSS to PDF without running JavaScript. It may fit an invoice template whose content is prepared before conversion, but it is not the right choice if the page must execute client-side code to calculate or display invoice content.

Check the PDF before using it
Inspect representative invoices rather than assuming a successful export is a correct document. Include short and long invoices, unusual characters, discounts and taxes, and enough line items to cross a page boundary.

- Check that customer and supplier details, descriptions, amounts, and totals are present and legible.
- Look for clipped text, unexpected blank pages, awkward page breaks, and rows split across pages.
- Confirm fonts and required images appear as intended, and that any links work if they matter to the recipient.
- Review output after changing the template, CSS, browser, or renderer version.
Troubleshoot common PDF-generation problems
The PDF is blank or invoice data is missing
The page may have exported before client-side data finished loading, or the rendering process may not have access to the required route or data. Wait for an application-specific ready signal, confirm the page content before exporting, and check server-side logs for failed data requests.
Images or fonts are missing
Check that asset URLs are reachable from the rendering environment and that requests are not blocked by authentication, network policy, or expired links. Wait for required assets and verify the final PDF; Puppeteer’s documented font wait does not guarantee that every remote image or application dependency is ready.
The invoice is cut off or paginates poorly
Set paper size and margins intentionally, then inspect the print layout. Adjust column widths and print CSS, use a repeatable table header where supported, and test long descriptions and multi-page tables in the renderer actually used.

Playwright’s documented PDF export is Chromium-only. Confirm the browser engine and installed browser in the deployed runtime, along with the library version and required system dependencies.
CSS or JavaScript appears ignored
Browser PDF APIs render with print media by default, so screen-only styles may not appear. If using WeasyPrint, remember that it does not execute JavaScript; render or calculate dynamic content before passing the finished HTML to it.
Invoice rules are separate from PDF rendering
A PDF renderer produces a file; it does not determine whether the invoice is legally or tax compliant. Required fields, tax treatment, invoice numbering, electronic invoicing rules, and retention periods depend on the jurisdiction and business circumstances. Check the applicable tax authority or legal guidance before using a generated invoice operationally.
