To generate Open Graph images in WordPress, either assign a social image to each page or use a template-driven plugin to create images from content such as the post title and featured image. The image is selected by the plugin that writes the page’s og:image metadata; setting a featured image alone does not guarantee that image will appear when the page is shared.
For individual editorial choices, Yoast SEO provides social-image controls and documented fallback behavior. For consistent graphics generated from page data, a plugin such as ogdynamic can map WordPress fields into image templates. Whichever method you choose, make sure only one plugin controls Open Graph output, then inspect both the page’s metadata and the destination service’s preview.
What an Open Graph image is—and what WordPress does with it
An Open Graph image is the image URL a page exposes to social platforms through the og:image meta tag. The image can be uploaded artwork from the WordPress media library or an image rendered from a template. A featured image is WordPress content data; a plugin or theme must use it when emitting social metadata for it to become the shared image.
This distinction creates two practical workflows:
- Select or upload an image: Set a page-specific social image in an SEO or Open Graph plugin, or let that plugin choose from its documented fallback sources.
- Generate an image from page data: Map fields such as a post title or featured image to a graphic template, then expose the generated image URL in the page’s metadata.
Yoast describes its og:image behavior in its OpenGraph functional specification. The WordPress.org Open Graph plugin also checks the featured image as one possible source.

Choose the right WordPress workflow
Use a social image you select
This is usually the simplest choice when you publish a limited number of pages or want each page’s artwork to be editorially distinctive. Upload an image or select one in the SEO plugin’s social controls. If you do not set a page-specific image, the plugin may use a featured image, an image in the page content, or a site-level default; the precise order depends on the plugin.
Generate graphics from a template
A template generator is useful when many pages should share a visual system, or when you want the title or other WordPress data rendered into the image. It requires more setup than choosing an image, and the generated result depends on the plugin’s compatibility and your site configuration.
The ogdynamic plugin listing describes mapping template fields to WordPress data, including a title field mapped to the post title and an image field mapped to the featured image. It lists configurations for posts, public post types, the homepage, blog listings, category and tag archives, author and date archives, search results, and WooCommerce products. Its listing says generated images are 1200×630 pixels and that it avoids duplicate og:image output from listed SEO plugins when generating an image. Those are listing claims; verify current compatibility and behavior with your installed versions and site setup.
Set Open Graph images with Yoast SEO
Yoast says Open Graph functionality is enabled by default. To check or change the setting, open the WordPress Dashboard and go to Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features → Social sharing. Confirm that the Open Graph data switch is on, then save if you made a change. The steps are documented in Yoast’s Open Graph setup guide.

Set a different image for one post or page
- Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Find Yoast’s social controls (the Yoast SEO panel or metabox, depending on the editor layout and installed version) and open the Social tab.
- Set the Facebook image to the image you want associated with the page, then update or publish the page.
- Inspect the rendered page metadata and confirm that its
og:imagepoints to the intended image.
Yoast’s documented og:image priority for a post or page is:
- A user-defined “Facebook image” in the Yoast metabox’s Social tab.
- The post’s featured image.
- A prominent image in the page content.
- For Yoast SEO WooCommerce, the first image in the WooCommerce product gallery.
- A social default image from the Search Appearance template.
- The site-level fallback or default social image.
Consequently, an explicitly selected social image can take precedence over the featured image. For author archives, Yoast documents a different order: the social default image from the template, the author’s Gravatar, then the site fallback. Yoast emits og:image:width and og:image:height only when an image is set and its dimensions are known. See the Yoast specification for the documented behavior.
Use the Open Graph plugin’s automatic image selection
The WordPress.org Open Graph plugin listing says the plugin has no configuration screen by default and uses WordPress data. Its documented image order is featured image, images in post content, attached images, then the site icon, custom logo, or header image if no other image is available. It can output up to three images by default. The listing also documents filters for changing metadata and image sources, so code-level customization may suit developers better than editors who need per-post controls.
The listing says the plugin disables Jetpack’s Open Graph output while it is active, to avoid duplicate tags. Check the current plugin listing and installed versions before adopting it, especially if another SEO or social plugin already emits Open Graph metadata.

Choose image dimensions and format with the platform in mind
There is no one dimension recommendation in the cited sources that applies to every platform and workflow. Yoast notes that platforms handle Open Graph images differently and recommends manually setting the image. Its published guidance is 1200×800 to 2000×1600 pixels and under 2 MB; treat that as Yoast guidance, not a universal or guaranteed platform requirement. See Yoast’s Open Graph image guidance.
The ogdynamic plugin listing specifies generated images of 1200×630 pixels. A WordPress support response also recommends an image close to 1200×630 and JPEG, GIF, or PNG, but that is support advice, not a platform specification. The response is at WordPress.org Support: “Featured Image when sharing”.
WordPress image-size controls are separate from social-platform requirements. The Theme Handbook documents default sizes of thumbnail (150×150 maximum), medium (300×300 maximum), medium-large (768 pixels wide with no height limit), large (1024×1024 maximum), and full (the original image). A theme can define additional sizes and crop behavior. These settings affect WordPress image handling; they do not determine which URL a social scraper selects. See the WordPress Theme Handbook.
When choosing an image, check the actual exported dimensions, file size, crop, and accessibility of the image URL. Use the recommendation of the plugin or service you are targeting, and verify the resulting preview rather than assuming one size guarantees a particular display.

Check the rendered metadata and preview
- Open the published page, not just the editor preview.
- Inspect its HTML source and find
og:imagein the document head. Confirm there is a usable URL and it points to the intended image. - Check whether more than one plugin or theme is emitting Open Graph tags. If duplicates appear, choose one source of output or disable the competing feature.
- Compare the selected image with the active plugin’s fallback order. A social-image override, content image, product-gallery image, or site default may be taking precedence over the featured image.
- Open the page in the target service’s sharing preview and verify the displayed result after updating metadata.
Yoast warns that duplicate Open Graph tags can cause social media sites to display an incorrect title, description, or image; its warning is in the setup guide. The sources cited here do not establish how quickly every service refreshes a cached preview, so a mismatch in a destination preview does not by itself prove that WordPress is still outputting the old metadata.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect shared image
The logo appears instead of the featured image
- Inspect the page’s
og:imagetag first. If it points to the logo, the active plugin may have reached its site-level fallback. - Check whether a page-specific social image is set and whether the plugin’s priority rules put it ahead of the featured image.
- Confirm the post has a featured image and that the plugin you use actually checks it.
The Open Graph plugin’s documented fallback can reach the site icon, custom logo, or header image. Yoast has its own documented fallback order, so do not assume both plugins select images in the same way.
The image is absent or does not load
- Confirm the page source contains an
og:imageURL. - Check that the image itself is available at that URL and compare its dimensions and file size with the guidance for your plugin or target platform.
- Inspect the target service’s preview after checking the WordPress output; image handling differs by platform.
Yoast notes that unsuitable image sizes can lead to errors or omission, but platform handling varies. Its size guidance is not a guarantee of display on every service.
Different titles, descriptions, or images appear between checks
- Look for duplicate Open Graph tags in the page head. Disable a competing plugin’s Open Graph feature or otherwise leave only one source controlling the output.
- Check which fallback or override is active in that source, then update the page and inspect its rendered metadata again.
- Compare the destination preview with the live page source so you can distinguish metadata output from the preview shown by the service.
The generator does not show the expected title or featured image
- Verify that each template field is mapped to the intended WordPress value.
- Check whether the affected page type is covered by the plugin’s configuration.
- Confirm the generated-image feature is active for the page and that another plugin is not producing a competing image tag.
- Check current plugin compatibility and behavior with your installed WordPress, SEO plugin, and theme versions.
These checks address the WordPress-side output. The available sources do not establish refresh times or identical scraper behavior across social platforms.

If you need to capture a page as an image for a separate workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server—not a WordPress Open Graph generator. Its one-call endpoint returns a screenshot or PDF of a URL; it does not replace setting the page’s og:image metadata. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the URL with the page you want to capture and provide your API key. The same API supports PNG, JPEG, or WebP screenshots and PDF output. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. ScreenshotNeo’s site lists Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000, and Business at $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Does adding a featured image automatically set the Open Graph image?
No. The plugin or theme that emits the page’s Open Graph tags determines whether and when it uses the featured image.
Can I use a different Open Graph image from the featured image?
Yes. Yoast’s Social controls let you set a page-specific Facebook image, which takes priority over the featured image in its documented fallback order.
Is 1200×630 the required size for every Open Graph image?
No. The sources give differing recommendations and plugin output dimensions; use the guidance for your workflow and verify the destination preview.
