You can use Google Docs as the starting point for an Open Graph (OG) image, but an image inserted into a document is not automatically a publishable image for a webpage. Create or generate the visual, make an image file available at a public URL, then add that URL and the page’s other Open Graph properties to the HTML head—or to the corresponding fields in your CMS.
What an Open Graph image is—and what Google Docs does not do
An Open Graph image is a visual a webpage declares to represent itself when another service reads its Open Graph metadata. The protocol describes how webpages can be represented as rich objects in a social graph. It does not guarantee a particular appearance, click-through rate, or result on every platform. Open Graph protocol
The important distinction is between making an image and publishing one. A picture visible inside a Google Doc is not, by itself, a publicly accessible image file or the value of a page’s og:image metadata. The webpage or CMS needs to serve the image, and the page needs metadata that points to it.
Choose a workflow
| Approach | Best fit | What you still need to do |
|---|---|---|
| Generate or edit an image in Docs | A one-off visual or a draft made while writing in Docs | Use a separate supported route to obtain and host a publishable image file, then add page metadata. |
| Automate a template from finalized documents | Repeated branded images and a predictable publishing handoff | Configure a trigger, map document content to a template, and send the output to storage or your CMS. |
| Build a custom Docs interface | Teams with development capacity and a need for a tailored workflow | Implement the image-generation, storage, and publishing steps; Apps Script provides building blocks, not a ready-made OG exporter. |
These are workflow choices, not a measured head-to-head ranking. The relevant trade-offs are setup effort, repeatability, brand consistency, and where the resulting file must live.

Option 1: Create an image inside Google Docs
Generate or edit the visual
Google’s Docs Editors Help describes image creation on desktop: open a document, use the image-generation control in the bottom bar, enter a prompt, and accept the result to insert it. To edit an image, use its image controls, make the requested change, and accept the edit. The exact controls may vary as Google changes its interface.
Access is limited: Google says the feature requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, or Workspace Experiments access for personal accounts. It is currently desktop-only and English-only. Google’s Help Center states, “Generated images are for use only within Google Docs.” That means this is a way to create an image in a document, not a documented direct export path for publishing an OG image. Google Docs Editors Help: Generate images with Gemini in Google Docs
Google Workspace Updates announced image creation and editing in Docs on July 28, 2026, including images, diagrams, infographics, and refining an aspect ratio with a natural-language prompt. For availability and usage limitations, follow the Help Center’s current guidance. Google Workspace Updates, July 28, 2026
Move from a document visual to a web image
After creating the visual, use a supported route to obtain a suitable image file and place it where your site or CMS can serve it. The file URL must be accessible to the services that fetch your page preview. Do not assume a Docs sharing link is the right image URL: the page’s metadata should identify the actual image resource the page serves.

Option 2: Automate branded images from finalized Docs
For repeated production, a reusable template can keep title placement, typography, and other brand elements consistent. Bannerbear’s vendor-authored tutorial describes a workflow using Google Docs, Zapier, and a Bannerbear template. It is an example recipe, not an independent comparison or the only way to automate this process. Bannerbear tutorial: How to Generate Open Graph Images from Google Docs
- Design a reusable template. Add the fields you need, such as title, author, publication date, avatar, or cover image. In the tutorial’s described process, image inputs need to be linked URLs rather than embedded files.
- Create workflow folders. Set up a folder for finalized Google Docs and a separate destination for generated images.
- Set the Zapier trigger. Use a new document in the finalized-documents folder as the event that starts the automation.
- Extract optional content. If needed, use Zapier Formatter to extract an image URL from the document’s plain text.
- Map fields to the template. Send the relevant document values into Bannerbear and generate the image.
- Deliver the output. Upload it to Google Drive or continue the workflow to a CMS or another publishing destination that can serve the image on the page.
Before relying on the automation, decide which document content is authoritative, what happens when a field is missing, and how the finished image reaches the page that publishes the metadata. The tutorial provides a practical pattern but does not establish comparative pricing, speed, or reliability.
Option 3: Build a custom Docs workflow with Apps Script
Google Apps Script can extend Docs with custom menus and user interfaces. Its documentation describes menus, dialogs, and sidebars bound to a document; HTML Service can serve a web app after deployment or provide the content of a dialog or sidebar. These capabilities can form part of a custom workflow, but the cited documentation does not provide a complete built-in Open Graph image generator or exporter. Google Apps Script: Extend Docs and Google Apps Script: HTML Service
A custom implementation still has to produce or obtain the image, put it in an appropriate storage location, make the image URL accessible to the webpage’s consumers, and update the page or CMS metadata. Choose this route when the team can maintain the integration and the custom interface solves a concrete workflow need; it is not a shortcut that removes the publishing handoff.
Add Open Graph properties to the published page
The Open Graph protocol identifies four required properties: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Add them to the page’s HTML head, or use the equivalent fields in your CMS. Replace the example values with the actual page title, type, canonical page URL, and publicly accessible image URL.

The protocol also documents optional structured image properties: secure URL, MIME type, width, height, and alt text. It says to specify og:image:alt when og:image is specified. For example, provide dimensions that correspond to the actual file rather than copying sample values as a universal size recommendation. The protocol does not establish one image size that is best for every social platform; check the intended platform’s current technical guidance for its image dimensions and rendering behavior. If you need a screenshot of a live webpage rather than an illustration composed in Docs, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It does not replace the steps of hosting an image and adding Open Graph metadata to your page.
For an HTML page you control, a direct API request can capture the rendered page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options and response details.

Troubleshooting the image and metadata handoff
The image appears in Docs but not in the webpage preview
The document image and the page’s OG image are separate. Confirm that the published page has an og:image property whose content is the intended image URL. Upload or otherwise serve the image through a location accessible to the page’s consumers.
The metadata points to a document or sharing page
og:image is a URL for the image resource, not the image bytes and not automatically a Google Docs link. Use the URL for the actual image file that your site or publishing destination serves.
The automation cannot use an embedded image
For the Bannerbear tutorial’s described workflow, image inputs must be linked URLs rather than embedded files. Provide an image URL in the form the integration expects, or revise the workflow so the image is stored and addressable before the template step.
The generated image lacks a field or looks inconsistent
Check the values mapped from the finalized document and the fields configured in the reusable template. Decide how missing title, author, date, or image values should be handled; the vendor tutorial does not establish a universal fallback behavior.
The preview looks different across destinations
The Open Graph protocol defines metadata, not identical rendering across every platform. Verify the target platform’s current image requirements and inspect the published page and accessible image URL. The available sources do not establish a universal image dimension or guarantee uniform preview appearance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Google Docs-generated image as my website’s OG image?
Google’s documented Gemini image feature says generated images are for use only within Google Docs. Treat it as an in-document creation tool, not a supported direct website-image export workflow.
Does adding an image to a Google Doc set the page’s Open Graph metadata?
No. The page or CMS must publish its own Open Graph properties, including an og:image URL.
