You can create an Open Graph (OG) image without buying design software: make a 1200×630 PNG in a browser-based generator, upload it to a public URL on your site, add an og:image tag in the page’s <head>, and check the resulting social preview. The 1200×630 size is the template guidance from the generator described below, not a universal guarantee for every social platform.
What an Open Graph image does
An OG image is the picture a service may display when someone shares a page URL. The page identifies it with the og:image property. Open Graph also defines optional structured properties for width and height, and says that an image should have an alternative-text description when og:image is present.
The image must be reachable at a stable, public URL. A crawler has to fetch the file without a login, private-network restriction or temporary local path. Creating the PNG is only half the job; the metadata and deployment are equally important.
Free workflow: create, publish and attach the image
1. Plan a small, readable composition
Write the page title or a short visual idea before opening a design tool. Social previews are often displayed much smaller than the source file, so use a clear hierarchy and avoid putting essential words against the edges. Use a high-contrast foreground and background, and include a meaningful description for accessibility in the metadata.

2. Generate a PNG in your browser
The og-image.org getting-started guide describes a browser workflow with templates. You select a template, edit the title and description, change colors and a background image, then export a PNG or copy the generated metadata. Its standard template workflow recommends 1200×630 pixels. Treat that as the tool’s recommendation rather than a promise that every platform renders exactly that canvas.
Before exporting, inspect every asset marked as free. A template can be free while an individual photograph, icon or font is not. Keep the original editable design if you expect to create a series of consistent images.
3. Check licensing before publishing
Adobe Express documents a Free plan with web and mobile access, 100,000-plus static and video templates, 4,000-plus fonts, standard editing tools, more than 1 million royalty-free stock assets, 5GB of storage and 10-day version history (the plan page was updated July 17, 2026). Adobe also warns that stock assets can move from free to paid, so verify an asset’s current status when you use it.
Canva distinguishes Free and Pro content. Free content can be used at no cost, while a free account displays a watermark on Pro content. Canva’s licenses and restrictions still apply, particularly for commercial work; open an element’s details and confirm that it is Free before exporting.

4. Upload the file to a public URL
Put the PNG on your website or another host you control. Use a predictable path such as https://example.com/images/article-name-og.png. Test that URL in a private browser window and with an ordinary HTTP request. It should return the image itself, not an HTML login page, a redirect loop or a development-server address.
- Use HTTPS and keep the URL stable after publishing.
- Do not require cookies, a session or a signed-in account for the crawler.
- Check that your server sends an image content type and does not block automated fetches.
- Keep the file size reasonable so a preview service can retrieve it promptly.
5. Add the Open Graph tags
Place these tags inside the page’s <head>. Replace the example URL and text with values for the page being shared.

<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A concise description of the article’s preview image">The width and height properties are optional structured properties, but including the dimensions gives consumers explicit information. The protocol calls for og:image:alt when an image is specified; write what the image conveys rather than repeating an unrelated page keyword.
6. Add a large-image card for X when needed
The og-image.org example also shows twitter:card set to summary_large_image and a twitter:image URL. Use that as an example for sites that still maintain X-specific card metadata:

7. Validate the deployed page
View the live HTML source, not only your CMS editor, and confirm that the tags are in the final response. Open the image URL directly, then share the page in the service you care about. If an old image appears, allow for that service’s cache and use its current preview-refresh controls if available. Cache-refresh timing and debugger behavior vary by platform.

Common problems and fixes
The preview has no image
Open the exact og:image URL without being logged in. Fix authentication requirements, broken redirects, firewall rules, invalid certificates or a typo in the path. Confirm that the live page—not a template preview—contains the tag.

The wrong or old image appears
Check the page source and the image URL first. If both are correct, the sharing service may have cached an earlier fetch. Keep the URL stable, wait for the service’s cache policy, and use its official refresh mechanism when one is provided.
The image is cropped or text is unreadable
Reopen the source at the generator’s 1200×630 canvas, enlarge the main type, increase contrast and move essential content inward. A platform may choose a different card layout, so preview the actual share surface rather than relying only on the source dimensions.
A supposedly free design contains a watermark
In Canva, inspect the element’s Free/Pro label and replace Pro assets or use a paid license. In Adobe Express, verify that the stock item is still included in the Free plan; Adobe documents that availability can change.
The crawler receives HTML instead of PNG
Inspect the response headers and body for the image URL. A rewrite rule, access-control page or hotlink protection may be returning HTML. Configure the host to serve the file publicly with an image content type, then test again.

The design looks fine in the editor but not after export
Download the actual PNG and inspect it locally. Check transparency, missing fonts, unexpected compression and color changes. Re-export after replacing unavailable assets, and verify the uploaded file byte-for-byte where your hosting workflow permits.
