You can generate Karate API test scaffolding from an OpenAPI description with the InditexTech Karate Tools generator, or use Karate Labs’ IntelliJ OpenAPI features to create operation snippets. Neither route replaces test design: generated data and checks need tailoring, and teams must decide how to review changes when the API contract evolves.
How to generate Karate API tests from OpenAPI
There are two distinct workflows in the documented tools. InditexTech Karate Tools provides batch generation of operation files, tests, schemas, and mock data. Karate Labs’ IntelliJ OpenAPI features let developers import an API description, browse operations, and create snippets in the IDE. The latter page labels these features Enterprise, so check current availability and terms before choosing it.
Before either workflow, treat the OpenAPI file as a reviewed input, not an unquestioned source of truth. Check that required fields, examples, response codes, authentication details, and operation IDs reflect the behavior the team intends to test. A generator can only build from the description it receives; the documentation does not promise that an incomplete or outdated contract produces accurate tests.
Choose a route that fits the work
| Route | What it provides | Best fit and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| InditexTech Karate Tools OpenAPI Generator | Batch generation of operation feature files and validation schemas, plus smoke tests, functional tests, and mock data for selected paths and response cases. | Useful when the project wants generated artifacts and its Maven-oriented workflow fits. The current documentation page is for version 6.0.0; verify the release and its fit for your project. |
| Karate Labs IntelliJ OpenAPI features | Import an OpenAPI/Swagger description, browse operations, create code snippets, select payloads, and export mocks. | Useful for interactive authoring of selected operations in the IDE. The documentation labels these OpenAPI features Enterprise; verify current access and terms. |
These are separate offerings, not two modes of Karate framework core. Karate itself is an API testing language and runtime; its basic feature syntax does not require Java glue code. The generator and IntelliJ flow are ways to start authoring, not guarantees of a finished or self-maintaining suite.

Understand the generator’s four modes
The InditexTech documentation describes four modes. Its operations mode is the required first generation step: it creates operation feature files and validation schemas shared by tests for OpenAPI paths and methods.
- Operations: Builds reusable operation files and schemas from the described paths and methods.
- Smoke tests: Generates checks for paths and response codes to assess conformity to the OpenAPI definition. Update generated data files to suit each scenario.
- Functional tests: Generates tests for selected path and response-code combinations. Plan to edit operation order, test data, verification steps, and any needed setup or additional checks.
- Mock data: Generates data for selected paths and response codes of external APIs. Adjust it for the path, parameters, request bodies, and response bodies you actually need.
Keep that scope precise: these modes are features of InditexTech Karate Tools, not built-in OpenAPI generation modes in the Karate framework.

Generate a focused set, not every possible case
Start with an inventory of operations, then select those that matter to the API’s users and risk profile. A small smoke layer can check endpoint and contract conformity; add functional scenarios for important workflows rather than expanding mechanically across every path and response combination. The generator supports selecting paths and response cases for functional tests, so use that selection to keep reviewable scope.
What generated tests still need
Generated tests are scaffolding. The generator documentation is explicit: “After the automatic generation the tests data files should be updated to fullfil the purpose of each scenario.” Its functional-test guidance also calls for changes to operation order, test data, and verification steps, with initial data or additional database and messaging checks added where needed.

Replace sample data with intentional fixtures
Examples help get a test started, but they are not automatically reliable test fixtures. Replace placeholder or sample values with stable data suited to the test environment. Make setup and cleanup explicit when a scenario depends on existing records, another service, a database, or a message flow. Otherwise a failure may reflect hidden state rather than the API behavior the scenario is meant to cover.
Assert outcomes, not only shape
A response can match its schema and still violate a business expectation. Keep useful status and schema checks, then add assertions for the outcome the caller cares about: for example, whether a created resource has the expected state or whether a workflow produces the intended result. Generated functional verification steps need review precisely because the contract alone cannot express every business rule.

Keep workflow order and state readable
For multi-operation tests, make dependencies visible: what creates the state, which call consumes it, and how the scenario leaves the environment. The generator documentation warns that operation order may need adjustment and identifies initial or additional database and messaging checks as possible manual work. Split scenarios when setup or cleanup obscures what a failure means.

Separate generated building blocks from project intent
Operation feature files and shared validation schemas can provide reusable foundations. They do not establish that tests automatically stay synchronized with every contract change, and the documentation does not describe an automatic reconciliation mechanism. Decide which files are generated and which contain project-specific fixtures or assertions. When the OpenAPI description changes, regenerate or compare output in a controlled branch and review the diff before accepting it; do not assume regeneration will preserve hand-maintained intent.

Reuse genuine common behavior
Keep common operation behavior in reusable files rather than copying the same request logic into many scenarios. For repeated inputs that exercise the same behavior, Karate’s feature-file guide recommends Scenario Outline. It can reduce repetition and support more complete behavior coverage across datasets. Do not force distinct business paths into one outline merely to shorten the files.
Use failures as signals, not just red builds
Run the suite in CI, but classify failures: a contract mismatch, an environment or fixture problem, and a business-rule regression require different responses. Keep test setup deterministic enough that a failed assertion gives the team useful evidence. The exact CI layout is a project choice; the examples repository offers templates and API, mock, and performance examples that can help you start from maintained patterns rather than inventing every convention.
Check compatibility before copying an example
Karate’s official examples repository is a useful source for a quick-start template and different project patterns, not proof that every example fits a production API. Its page flags compatibility issues for particular historical Karate versions with Java 22 and Java 24. Confirm the compatibility of the specific Karate and Java versions you plan to use, and check current build instructions rather than copying an old example unchanged.
Quick Recap
A practical adoption checklist
- Review the contract: Confirm operations, required fields, examples, response codes, authentication, and operation IDs against intended API behavior.
- Select the workflow: Choose batch generation with InditexTech Karate Tools or interactive IntelliJ authoring with Karate Labs’ OpenAPI features, after verifying current release and access details.
- Generate selectively: Start with operation files where useful, then choose a focused smoke layer and a limited set of functional workflows.
- Repair the tests: Replace sample data, define state setup and cleanup, set meaningful operation order, and add assertions for business outcomes.
- Establish a regeneration policy: Mark generated and hand-maintained areas, review generated diffs when the contract changes, and preserve project-specific intent deliberately.
- Run and diagnose: Execute in CI with stable fixtures and distinguish contract, environment, and behavior failures.
