Short answer: a URL-based image workflow sends an authenticated HTTP request to the image provider’s documented endpoint. The URL identifies the endpoint; your prompt and options belong in the request body or SDK call. The response may contain base64-encoded image data rather than a public image URL. Decode that data, save it as a file, and serve it from storage if your application needs a URL.
What “URL-based image API” actually means
The phrase can describe two different tasks:
- Image generation: text and optional settings are submitted to a model, which returns image data.
- URL capture: an existing webpage URL is rendered and returned as a screenshot or PDF.
This guide covers generation first. A URL in an HTTP request is the destination of the request; it is not automatically a supported prompt-in-query-string interface. Do not put a prompt in a query parameter unless the provider’s current reference explicitly documents that format. Also do not confuse an input field named image_url (which can point to an image supplied to a multimodal model) with generated-image output. They are separate concepts.
Before you write code
Get an API key and keep it private
Authenticated API use requires a provider-issued key. Create it in the provider’s dashboard, store it in a secret manager or environment variable, and never commit it to a repository, browser bundle, mobile app, screenshot, or published tutorial. A server should make the generation request; the browser should call your server if users need to submit prompts.

Endpoint paths, model names, accepted fields, quotas and limits change, so copy the current endpoint from the provider’s live image-generation reference rather than reusing a path from an unrelated API.

Confirm the current request contract
Check the documentation for the model you selected and verify:
- authentication header format;
- required model and prompt fields;
- accepted size, quality, background and output-format values;
- whether the response is synchronous, streamed, or job-based;
- maximum prompt, image and response sizes;
- rate limits, pricing and retention behavior.
Model listings can change. For example, the current model list identifies GPT-Image-2 for image generation and editing, but the material available for this article does not establish a complete, current request schema or limits. Treat the live endpoint reference as authoritative.
Send a generation request over HTTP
The following Python program is a provider-neutral, runnable request skeleton. It reads the endpoint and credentials from the environment, sends JSON, checks the HTTP result, and decodes common base64 response shapes. Replace the payload keys only after checking your provider’s current documentation.

Handle base64 output and streaming responses
Image bytes are often transported as base64 inside JSON. Base64 increases payload size, so decode it as soon as it reaches your trusted server, validate the resulting byte size and content type, then store it in object storage or return it to your client through an authenticated download route. Do not log the complete response; prompts, image data and keys can all be sensitive.
A streaming image API can emit partial and completed image events, with generated content represented as base64 data. Treat the stream as an event sequence: read each event, associate it with its request, append or replace partial data according to the provider’s event contract, and finalize only when the completion event arrives. Do not assume a partial base64 fragment is independently viewable unless the documentation says so. Set a read timeout and cancel the stream if the client disconnects.

Choose output settings deliberately
Size and quality
Use only dimensions and quality values accepted by the selected model. Larger images generally consume more bandwidth and storage; choose the smallest output that meets the display or print requirement, then resize on your server when appropriate.
Background and format
A transparent background is useful for compositing but may not be supported for every model or format. PNG, JPEG and WebP have different size and compatibility trade-offs. Record the actual content type returned by the API rather than inferring it from the prompt.
Reproducibility and moderation
Keep the exact prompt, model identifier, settings and request timestamp with your application record. If the provider exposes a seed or safety setting, follow its current reference. Handle policy refusals as normal application outcomes, not as transport failures.
Reliability, performance and cost controls
- Use connection and read timeouts; image generation can take longer than ordinary JSON calls.
- Retry only transient failures such as documented rate-limit or server errors. Use exponential backoff with a cap and an idempotency mechanism if the provider supports one, otherwise a retry can create duplicate charges.
- Limit concurrent requests per account and queue bursts. Respect
Retry-Afterwhen supplied. - Cache identical, deterministic application requests only when your product’s privacy and freshness requirements permit it.
- Track request ID, model, latency, status, output bytes and provider usage metadata without storing secrets or unnecessary image content.
- Estimate cost from the provider’s current pricing page and your selected model, size and quality. The available documentation does not establish current prices or limits, so do not hard-code figures in production logic.
Troubleshooting common failures
401 or 403 authentication errors
Check that the key is present in the server environment, the header spelling matches the reference, and the key has access to the selected model. Rotate a key that may have been exposed; do not paste it into issue trackers.

400 invalid parameter or model
Compare every field and value with the current model-specific schema. A field accepted by an image-input endpoint may be invalid for generation. Remove optional settings, test the smallest documented request, then add options one at a time.
200 response but no image appears
Inspect the JSON envelope and locate the documented base64 or binary field. Check whether the request returned a moderation result, an asynchronous job identifier or a stream event rather than completed image data.
Corrupt output
Decode base64 exactly once, write bytes in binary mode, and use the returned content type. Do not URL-decode or UTF-8-decode image bytes. If the response is streamed, wait for the completed event before writing the final file.
Timeouts and rate limits
Increase the read timeout within your product’s limits, queue work, and retry transient responses with backoff. Avoid launching unbounded parallel requests from a web request handler.

FAQ
Does an image API always return a public URL?
No. The documented streaming reference supports base64-encoded image output, so design your integration to receive and store image data. Use a hosted URL only when the provider explicitly documents that output.
Can I call a generation API directly from browser JavaScript?
Not safely with a secret API key. Put the authenticated call on your server and expose a narrowly scoped endpoint to your browser client.
Should I use streaming for every image?
No. Use a normal response for simple, short jobs; streaming is useful when you need progress or partial events and are prepared to implement the provider’s event protocol.
