Generate App Store screenshots by capturing faithful screens from your running app or composing presentation images, exporting 1–10 opaque JPEG, JPG, or PNG files at Apple’s required dimensions, and uploading them to the correct platform and localization in App Store Connect. There is no single universal screenshot size: the required dimensions depend on platform, display class, model and orientation. Check Apple’s live screenshot specification immediately before every release.
1. Decide which screenshot sets you need
Start with the platforms your app actually supports. App Store Connect can require separate screenshot groups for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch. Apple’s current table marks the relevant groups as required for the platforms in your app record. For example, 13-inch iPad screenshots are required when the app runs on iPad.
- iPhone: choose the applicable display class and portrait, landscape or both orientations.
- iPad: include the required 13-inch class when your app supports iPad, then check other applicable classes.
- Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch: use each platform’s own accepted sizes and orientation rules.
Device mappings change. Apple’s release notes have added screenshot specifications for newer iPhone and Apple Watch models, so do not reuse a dimension list from an old article.
2. Capture real app screens or compose presentation images
Capture with Xcode or a device
Run the release build in the simulator or on a device, navigate to the exact state you want to show, and capture the screen using Xcode’s documented screenshot workflow or the device’s screenshot command. This preserves the real interface and is appropriate when the image itself demonstrates functionality.

Compose a marketing image
You can place an authentic app screen inside a designed frame with a headline, annotation or background. Keep every claim and UI state faithful to the shipped app. Do not add controls, results or features that users will not find after installation. Export the final composition at the exact required pixel dimensions, not merely at a matching aspect ratio.
3. Use Apple’s dimension table, not a universal template
Dimensions are determined by platform, display class and orientation. The following are examples from Apple’s current reference; they are not a permanent master list.

Supply the highest required resolution when the UI is identical across device sizes and localizations. Apple can scale that asset down. If layouts or marketing copy differ, use Media Manager to provide custom device-size and locale-specific files.
4. Export files that App Store Connect accepts
- Use
.jpeg,.jpgor.png. - Provide between one and ten screenshots in each applicable screenshot set.
- Remove transparency and alpha channels. A PNG with an alpha channel is not acceptable even though PNG itself is supported.
- Check pixel dimensions after export; design-tool canvas dimensions can change during scaling or optimization.
- Open each exported file once to confirm it is not corrupted and that text remains legible at the displayed size.
5. Upload screenshots in App Store Connect
- Open App Store Connect and select your app.
- Select the platform and version, then choose the relevant iPhone or iPad screenshot area where applicable.
- Select the localization you are editing.
- Drag the files into the matching screenshot well, or use the upload control.
- Repeat for other required platforms, orientations and locales.
- Wait for processing and inspect every screenshot well before submitting.
Apple documents uploads when the app record is in states such as Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected or Developer Rejected. Media Manager is the place to add custom device sizes and localized variants. If the app has already been approved, Apple requires a new version before you can update its screenshots.

6. Localizations and automatic scaling
Decide whether one shared set genuinely works in every language. If the interface and marketing text are unchanged, the highest required resolution can be scaled to smaller device sizes and reused across localizations. When text, layout, screenshots of localized content or device composition changes, upload a specific asset for that locale and size through Media Manager. Review line breaks and legibility in every language rather than assuming translated text will fit the original design.
7. Automate uploads with the App Store Connect API
For a release pipeline, Apple’s API uses a four-stage asset flow:
- Reserve the screenshot asset and obtain its upload instructions.
- Upload the file, splitting it into parts when the returned instructions require multipart transfer.
- Commit the uploaded asset.
- Verify processing and handle any processing error before treating the release as ready.
Automation should still validate platform, locale, orientation, file type, alpha-channel absence and dimensions before reserving an asset. A successful HTTP upload does not necessarily mean App Store Connect has finished processing it.
8. Screenshots versus app previews
An app preview is an optional video, not another screenshot. Apple’s current app-preview specification allows 15–30 seconds, a maximum file size of 500 MB, and .mov, .m4v or .mp4 files. H.264 is accepted; ProRes 422 HQ is also listed for .mov. You can provide up to three previews per supported device size and language. These limits are separate from the still-image rules, so do not upload a video where a screenshot is required.

9. Troubleshoot rejected or missing screenshots
“Missing required screenshot” or submission error
Cause: a required platform, display class or orientation has no asset. Recheck Apple’s live table against the platforms enabled for the app, then add the missing screenshot set.
File rejected because of format or transparency
Cause: an unsupported extension or an alpha channel. Re-export as JPEG/JPG or a PNG without transparency and inspect the file properties before uploading.
Wrong dimensions
Cause: using a generic phone template, an outdated model list or a retina scale that changed the pixel count. Set the canvas in pixels and compare it with the current Apple table for that exact class and orientation.
Screenshot looks correct in one language but clips in another
Cause: automatic scaling or shared artwork was used despite different text lengths. Create a locale-specific composition in Media Manager and check every localized screenshot.

Upload succeeds but the image is not ready
Cause: App Store Connect processing is still running or failed after transfer. Wait for processing status, then replace the asset if an error is reported. API pipelines should poll verification status rather than stopping after the upload response.
Approved app’s screenshots cannot be edited
Apple requires a new app version to update screenshots after approval. Create the version first, then upload the replacement assets.
10. Quality, reliability and cost considerations
- Accuracy: capture a release build or a composition that reflects the shipped behavior.
- Consistency: use a repeatable naming scheme such as
platform_locale_orientation_order.pngso automation cannot mix locales. - Readability: keep UI text and annotations legible at the actual store display size; do not rely on viewers zooming in.
- Repeatability: keep source layouts and export presets so a new device class or translation can be added without rebuilding every image manually.
- Cost: Apple’s documented workflow does not require buying a particular device or peripheral. Xcode capture generally assumes access to a Mac, while device capture can use hardware you already own.
