To generate a shareable PDF link, upload the file to a cloud or PDF service, set who may access it and what they may do, then copy the link the service provides. In Google Drive, for example, select the PDF, choose Share, set General access to the intended audience, choose a permission such as Viewer, and select Copy link. Before choosing an unrestricted link, consider that anyone who obtains it may be able to open the file.
Generate a link in Google Drive
These steps describe Google Drive’s documented desktop workflow. Button names and their placement can differ on mobile, and available settings can depend on your account or organization. Google’s current instructions are at Share files from Google Drive – Computer.
- Sign in to Google Drive and locate the PDF. If it is only on your computer, upload it first: choose New, then File upload, and select the PDF. Wait for the upload to finish before changing its sharing settings.
- Select the file and choose Share. Depending on the interface, you may also be able to open its context menu and choose Share.
- Under General access, decide whether to keep access Restricted or allow Anyone with the link. Make this choice deliberately: anyone who gets an unrestricted link may be able to access the PDF, including someone it is forwarded to.
- Choose a role. Use Viewer when recipients only need to read the document; choose Commenter or Editor only when they need those additional capabilities.
- Choose Copy link, then paste the generated link into your email, message, or other intended channel.
- Test the copied link in a private or signed-out browser window if recipient access matters. Check that the file opens as intended without granting more access than you mean to.
Choose who can open the PDF before sharing
A share link is not the same thing as a local file path: the link points to a file hosted by the service, and the service’s access settings decide who can open it. A link that works for you while signed in may fail for a recipient, so test the recipient’s likely access conditions.
Use a restricted or invited link for private files
Keep access restricted or invite specific people when the PDF contains personal, financial, medical, confidential, or otherwise sensitive information. Google Drive distinguishes Restricted from Anyone with the link; Adobe Acrobat also documents link settings for invited people, people in an organization, or anyone on the internet with the link. An invitation-based workflow can require recipients to sign in or match the invited identity, depending on the service and configuration.

Use anyone-with-the-link access only when forwarding is acceptable
A broadly accessible link is convenient when recipients should not need individual invitations, but it is not limited to the first person you send it to. Anyone who obtains the link may be able to open the document. Do not treat an obscure URL as a substitute for access control.
Give the least permission recipients need
Google Drive offers Viewer, Commenter, and Editor roles. A viewer can read, a commenter can add comments, and an editor can make changes. Google says viewers can download by default, though the owner can control download, print, and copy options. Such controls do not make a document impossible to reproduce—for example, a recipient may still photograph a screen—so avoid sharing sensitive material with anyone who should not see its contents.
Other ways to create a PDF link
Adobe Acrobat
Open the PDF in Acrobat, choose Share, and open Link Setting. Choose the audience that matches your need—anyone on the internet with the link, people in your organization, or invited people only. For a view-only review link, turn off the setting that allows people to comment. Apply the settings and choose Create a link to share. Adobe says recipients can open shared documents in a browser; sign-in and collaboration behavior can vary with the current workflow and account context. Dropbox
In Dropbox, use the file’s shared-link controls to decide who can view its contents and what they can do. Dropbox documents the ability to create, change, or remove a shared-link expiration date for users on Professional, Essentials, Standard, Advanced, Business, Business Plus, and Enterprise plans, on Dropbox web or mobile. Check what the link allows—and how long it should work
- Audience: Is access restricted to named people, limited to an organization, or available to anyone with the link?
- Recipient sign-in: Will the intended recipient be asked to sign in? Test with a private or signed-out browser session, but remember that organizational policies can affect the result.
- Permission: Does the recipient need only to view, or also comment or edit? Select the narrowest suitable role.
- Download and copying: Can recipients download, print, or copy the file? In Drive, viewing permits downloads by default, subject to the owner’s controls.
- Expiry: Should access end after a set period? Confirm that the service and your account support link expiration before relying on it.
- File identity: Confirm you shared the final PDF, not an earlier draft, a folder with broader access, or a similarly named file.
Service settings differ, and the cited help pages describe selected workflows rather than every account limitation or a complete feature comparison. Choose based on where the PDF already lives and which access controls your account actually provides.
Troubleshoot common link problems
The recipient sees an access request or sign-in prompt
The file may be restricted, the recipient may not be signed in to the invited account, or a workplace or school policy may prevent public access. Check the file’s audience setting and the recipient’s identity. If the PDF is sensitive, keep it restricted and grant access to the right person rather than switching to anyone-with-the-link access just to bypass the prompt.

The link opens the wrong file or a folder
Return to the storage service and use the sharing command on the PDF itself. Copy the link again, then open it in a separate browser window and check the filename and contents before sending it.
The recipient can read the PDF but cannot comment or edit
Check the role assigned to that recipient or link. A Viewer role is intended for reading; comments or edits require a role and service workflow that permit them. If you want people to review without changing the file, use the service’s commenting controls rather than granting editing access.

Your own signed-in session may have access the recipient does not. Test in a private or signed-out browser window. If access is invitation-only, verify the recipient is using the invited account; if it is meant to be broadly accessible, verify that the selected setting really permits anyone with the link and is not overridden by an organization policy.

You need the link to stop working later
Look for an expiration or removal control in the service’s shared-link settings. Dropbox documents expiration management for the plan tiers listed above; availability should not be presumed for other plans or services. If the service does not offer an expiry for your account, you may be able to revoke the link or change the audience later, but recipients who already downloaded a copy may still have it.

Privacy and ownership details to keep in mind
Google notes that the owner’s name and email address are visible when a file link is shared. Review the file’s sharing details as well as its contents, especially if you are sharing from a personal account on behalf of an organization. If the PDF is no longer meant to be accessible, revisit its sharing settings and remove or narrow access where the service allows it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a shareable PDF link without uploading the PDF somewhere?
A shareable link must point to a file available through a service. A local file path on your computer will not give remote recipients access; use a cloud or PDF service that hosts the document.
Will an anyone-with-the-link PDF show up in search results?
The cited service instructions establish that anyone who obtains such a link may access the file; they do not establish that every shared PDF will be indexed by search engines. Do not rely on lack of indexing to protect a sensitive document.

Usually you can revisit the service’s sharing controls to remove the link or restrict access, where those controls are available. That cannot retrieve copies recipients already downloaded.
