For an Indian resident individual, funding an eligible GIFT City account for permitted financial services or products generally follows the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) route. Withdrawals and transfers back to an Indian bank account depend on the specific bank or investment provider, account type, and product terms. Get the provider’s current instructions before sending or withdrawing money.
First, identify what kind of GIFT City account you have
GIFT City is home to International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) entities, including International Banking Units (IBUs). “Investment account” can mean different things: a bank foreign-currency account, an account on an investment platform, or an investment in a fund or other product. Funding a bank account is not necessarily the same process as subscribing to an investment, and redeeming an investment may involve separate steps before proceeds can be withdrawn.
Start with the particular provider. Ask for written, current instructions for your account and the transaction you intend to make. The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) provides banking regulations and handbook material and lists IBUs on its banking page. Its banking FAQ was marked “Under review” when checked, so verify requirements with the provider and consult current regulator materials.

How Indian residents can fund an eligible account
The RBI says resident individuals may open foreign-currency accounts in an IFSC for permitted financial services or products. For eligible purposes, the broad route for a resident individual to remit funds to an IFSC is through LRS, using an authorised person. The RBI framework also covers specified overseas transactions through an IFSC foreign-currency account. It does not mean every product, payment method, or account is eligible; confirm that your intended transaction qualifies with the provider and your remitting bank. Check your LRS allowance and paperwork
Under the RBI directions, the LRS limit for a resident individual is USD 250,000 per person per financial year, which runs from April through March. This is the individual’s overall LRS remittance limit, not a deposit cap specific to a GIFT City account. Check your remaining LRS headroom with your authorised-dealer (AD) bank before initiating a transfer. The directions require you to designate an AD branch, submit Form A2, and provide PAN. RBI LRS directions.
Prepare the provider’s funding details
- Confirm eligibility. Check that your residency status, intended financial service or product, and source of funds fit the applicable route.
- Request the provider’s latest instructions. Ask for the beneficiary and account details, accepted currencies, remittance purpose or purpose code, payment route, and any reference to include.
- Coordinate with your AD bank. If using LRS as a resident individual, complete the bank’s current process, including Form A2 and PAN, and confirm the designated branch and available annual allowance.
- Keep the payment confirmation. Reconcile the transfer against the receiving account or investment provider. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal settlement time.
How to withdraw or send money back to an Indian bank
There is no single withdrawal procedure established for every GIFT City account. Contact the IBU or investment provider for current instructions, supported destinations and currencies, required documents, charges, currency-conversion terms, and expected processing time. Also clarify whether you are withdrawing cash already held in a bank account or redeeming an investment: an investment redemption can have its own terms and timeline.

Information a provider may request
An ICICI Bank IBU outward-remittance form, version 1.0 effective November 2024, illustrates the details one provider may request: the account to debit, amount, whether currency conversion is required, charge instructions, beneficiary name and account number, address, bank and branch details, SWIFT details, and purpose of remittance. It also includes options for full or partial repatriation and remittances associated with term-deposit closure. This is an example of one bank’s form, not a standard checklist for all providers. Check deposit and redemption conditions
If the money is in a term deposit, ask whether it must mature or can be closed early, whether proceeds first need to move to a linked account, and what conditions apply. If it is invested in a fund or another product, check its redemption rules separately. The ICICI form shows that a provider may offer choices related to term-deposit closure and repatriation; it does not establish other providers’ procedures.

Before authorising an outward transfer, ask for the applicable exchange rate or FX spread, bank and intermediary charges, processing cutoffs, expected timing, and any tax or regulatory declarations. The reviewed sources do not provide a universal fee or timing schedule, or establish that every provider supports transfers to every destination or Indian bank account.
Important restrictions and account checks
- Domestic payments: The RBI says a resident individual may not use an IFSC foreign-currency account to settle domestic transactions with other residents. Do not assume it can be used like an ordinary Indian bank account for resident-to-resident payments. RBI directions.
- Provider-specific deposit protection: Federal Bank’s IBU account-opening form says its IBU deposits are not covered by deposit insurance. That is Federal Bank’s disclosure, not evidence that the same statement applies to every provider. Ask your chosen bank what protections or exclusions apply to your account. Federal Bank IBU account-opening form.
- Terms can differ by provider and product: Eligibility, supported currencies, minimum balances, transfer routes, charges, maturity or early-closure conditions, and documents are not established uniformly across IBUs and investment providers. Confirm the terms that apply to your specific account before funding it.
What to compare before choosing a provider
If you are still selecting an IBU or investment provider, request comparable written terms for these points:
Rank #4
- Eligibility and account or product type
- Accepted currencies and funding routes
- Supported withdrawal destinations and process
- Bank, correspondent, and foreign-exchange charges
- Processing cutoffs and expected settlement times
- Minimum balances and deposit maturity or early-closure terms
- Required documents and available service channels
- Deposit-protection disclosures
The available provider materials do not support a consistent multi-bank comparison, so terms should be checked directly rather than inferred from one bank’s form.
