Start with Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Storage to see what is taking up space. Review files before removing anything, restore items you still need from app Recycle bins, and move wanted files to a compatible SD card or verify a backup before deleting local copies. Samsung notes that menus and features can vary by model, country, and software version; if the path differs, search Settings for “Storage.”

1. Check what is using storage

Open Settings, then look for Device care or Battery and device care and tap Storage. Review the category breakdown and note how much free space remains. The exact screens can vary by Galaxy model and country, so use Settings search for “Storage” if you do not see those labels. Samsung’s Device care guidance describes the storage screen and its regional variation.

2. Review suggested files before removing them

Some Galaxy storage screens can surface large, duplicate, or unused files as possible cleanup candidates. Open each candidate and check its name, date, contents, and location before deciding what to do. A storage tool can flag files, but it cannot know which copy matters to you.

  • Large files: Open the file and confirm you can safely remove it or move it elsewhere.
  • Duplicates: Compare copies and choose which one to keep; do not delete every item marked duplicate automatically.
  • Unused files: Check whether an old download or recording is still important before removing it.

Samsung India says Device care Storage may show duplicate, large, or unused files to help identify potential cleanup. See Samsung’s storage guidance for that feature.

3. Check app Recycle bins before permanent deletion

Deleting an item may move it to an app’s Recycle bin rather than free its space permanently. Restore anything you still want before using Delete or Delete All, and check the relevant apps rather than assuming one bin covers everything.

  1. My Files: Open My Files > Recycle bin, select any wanted item, and choose Restore.
  2. Gallery: Open Gallery > Menu > Recycle bin, then restore items you want to keep before deleting anything from the bin.
  3. Voice Recorder: Check its trash or Recycle bin if you use the app to keep recordings.

Samsung’s menus can differ by model and software version. Its Canada guidance says Gallery Bin items are automatically permanently deleted after 30 days; that retention period applies to Gallery Bin items in that guidance, not necessarily to other apps or deletion methods. Samsung’s Recycle bin instructions explain restoring and managing items.

4. Move wanted files rather than deleting them

If your exact Galaxy model supports expandable storage, you can move files to a compatible microSD card instead of removing them. In My Files, select the items, choose the move option, and select the SD card as the destination. Check that the files appear and open from the new location before removing any other copy.

SD card support depends on the model: Samsung says most Galaxy smartphones have the option, but not all do. Confirm compatibility for your phone before buying a card or planning to move files. Samsung’s SD card guide covers the model-dependent option, and its My Files guidance notes that menus and Recycle bin support can vary.

5. Back up important files, then verify the backup

Samsung’s Google Drive backup instructions give the path Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data. A cloud backup and freeing local phone storage are separate actions: backup uses storage available with your Google Account, and it does not by itself mean the local files have been removed.

Wait for the backup to complete and confirm important content is accessible from the backup destination before deleting its local copy. Samsung’s backup instructions describe the Google Drive route; labels and availability may vary by device and region.

6. Be cautious with app storage controls

If you are trying to free space inside an app, use that app’s settings carefully. Do not treat Clear cache and Clear data or Clear storage as interchangeable: clearing data can affect information or setup held by the app. Only use a data-clearing option when you understand what it will remove for that specific app. The cited Samsung guidance does not establish one current, version-wide cache procedure for all Galaxy phones.

Choose the cleanup route that fits

Approach Best when What to check first
Remove items you no longer need You have reviewed specific files and want to reclaim space on the phone. Confirm each file, then review the relevant app’s Recycle bin before emptying it; permanent deletion or expiry may make recovery impossible.
Move wanted files to an SD card Your Galaxy model supports expandable storage and you want to keep local access to the files. Confirm model compatibility, choose the SD card as the destination, and verify the moved files open.
Back up to Google Drive You want a separate copy of important content. Confirm the backup completed and the content is accessible. Google Drive backup uses Google Account storage and does not automatically remove local copies.
