You can often free up Galaxy S26 storage without touching your photo library: first check what is using space, then review Downloads and other identifiable files, remove items you no longer need, and clear app cache selectively. Avoid bulk-deleting photos or clearing app data unless you understand what will be removed. Menu names can vary by software version.
1. Check what is using storage
Start with the phone’s storage breakdown so you can target the category actually taking up space instead of deleting files at random. Open Settings and look for Device care or Battery and device care, then tap Storage. Samsung’s general Galaxy instructions describe a category breakdown, but labels and available review tools can differ by software version. Samsung’s storage guide explains the general process.
If your phone offers categories such as large files, duplicate files, or unused apps, treat them as review lists—not automatic deletion recommendations. Open each item and verify what it is before removing it.
2. Review Downloads and other non-photo files
Downloads are a useful place to look before changing anything in Gallery. In My Files, inspect the Downloads folder and any large-file or installation-file categories that appear. - Remove only files you recognize and no longer need, such as an old installer or a duplicate download.
- Open large documents, videos, and archives before deleting them; a large file may still be important.
- Do not choose a bulk-select or “select all” option without checking the selection.
- If you are unsure about a file, leave it in place or move a verified copy elsewhere before deleting it.

3. Clear an app’s cache—not its data
Apps can accumulate temporary cached files. If one app is using substantial storage, you can clear its cache without clearing its data:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then choose the app you want to review.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
Samsung distinguishes temporary cache from app data in its guidance, including instructions that name Galaxy S26. Samsung’s storage instructions and cache and data guidance explain the difference.

Clear data can remove an app’s files, settings, and account state, or reset the app. It is not a routine substitute for clearing cache. Use it only if you intend to reset that app and have checked that anything you need is backed up or recoverable.

4. Inspect Recycle bin before emptying it
Deleted Gallery media may remain recoverable in the Gallery Recycle bin, and Samsung documents a consolidated Recycle bin in My Files. Check the bin before emptying it in case it contains something you want to restore. Samsung says Gallery bin items are automatically and permanently deleted after 30 days on the documented service; that retention detail applies to Gallery, not necessarily every other bin feature. Samsung’s Gallery Recycle bin guidance describes the behavior.
Emptying the bin permanently removes its contents. Review the items first, restore anything important, and empty it only when you are certain you no longer need what remains.

5. Move photos only after checking backup and sync
Cloud sync and local deletion are not automatically the same thing. Samsung documents Gallery sync with OneDrive and a Free up phone space option on supported setups, but availability and behavior depend on region, software, and account configuration. Samsung’s Gallery and OneDrive guide describes the supported workflow, while Samsung’s regional sync guidance notes the cloud-side considerations.

- Confirm that Gallery sync is enabled on your phone and that the photos you care about have finished syncing.
- Sign in to the cloud account and verify that the originals you expect to keep are actually present there.
- Read the phone’s confirmation carefully before using any option that frees local space or deletes media; check whether it removes only local copies or affects synchronized items.
Do not assume that seeing a cloud icon or having sync enabled proves every photo is safely backed up. If you are uncertain about the effect of a deletion, keep the local copy until you can verify the cloud copy and the sync behavior for your setup.

6. Save future videos to external storage where supported
If videos are a recurring source of storage use, Samsung Australia documents a Galaxy S26 camera option to save recordings directly to a USB drive or portable SSD. This guidance is specifically for Australian variants; owners elsewhere should check their regional device and software instructions. External recording also requires compatible storage and a connection the phone supports. See Samsung Australia’s external-video instructions.
This is an option for future recordings, not a requirement for ordinary cleanup. For existing photos or videos, verify a transfer before deleting the phone copy.
