First check which storage is full: your phone or tablet, or your Google Account. To free up device space while keeping backed-up photos in Google Photos, use Free up space on this device. To free up Google Account storage without removing items from the library, convert eligible existing uploads to Storage saver—but that can reduce their quality. Deleting items through cloud storage management removes them from Google Photos.
How do I free up space on my phone but keep my photos in Google Photos?
Make sure backup has finished for the photos and videos you want to keep, then remove their local copies with Google Photos. Google’s Android instructions warn: “Important: This feature deletes photos from your device.” The items remain in your Google Photos library and at photos.google.com, but they are no longer available in your device’s built-in gallery or offline. You must be signed in to Google Photos to view them there.
- Open the Google Photos app and tap your account profile picture or initial.
- Confirm that backup is complete for the items you intend to remove from the device.
- Choose Free up space on this device and follow the prompts.
On Android, photos and videos less than 30 days old may remain on the device. On iPhone or iPad, open Apple Photos after using the Google Photos action and delete the items from Recently Deleted as well; otherwise, they may continue using device storage. See Google’s instructions for Android and iPhone and iPad.

This removes device copies, not cloud-library items. If you need the captured file to remain unchanged on a device or in an independent backup, do not remove that copy until you have confirmed another copy exists where you need it.

How do I free up Google Photos storage without deleting photos?
If your Google Account quota is full, Google offers a conversion for eligible existing uploads. It keeps converted items in the library but changes their stored quality to Storage saver. On a computer, use this route:
- Go to photos.google.com and sign in.
- Open Settings, then Manage storage.
- Select Recover storage, then Convert existing photos and videos to Storage saver.
- Review the information and confirm the conversion.
Google allows this recovery conversion once per day. It applies to eligible existing uploads; changing the quality setting for future backups does not itself convert files already uploaded. The Recover storage control may not appear for some accounts, including accounts with unlimited Google Photos storage, and some items cannot be compressed. Google’s computer storage-management instructions explain the control.
What does Storage saver do to photo and video quality?
Storage saver is not an untouched copy of the original. Google’s current guidance says photos larger than 16 MP are resized to 16 MP, while videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p. Google says 16 MP photos can produce good-quality prints up to 24 × 16 inches. Some information, such as video closed captions, may be lost. Files that cannot be compressed remain at their original file size; check an item’s Details for Not eligible for Storage saver.

Google recommends Original quality for needs such as images above 16 MP, video above 1080p, or high-detail and large-print use. If the exact captured file matters, keep an independent copy before converting anything. Google describes the options in its Android and computer backup-quality guidance.

| Choice | Where space is recovered | Does the item stay in Google Photos? | Quality or copy impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free up space on this device | Phone or tablet | Yes, if the item was backed up | Cloud quality unchanged; local device copy removed |
| Recover storage by converting eligible uploads | Google Account quota | Yes | Stored quality may be reduced under Storage saver |
| Delete items in Manage storage | Google Account quota | No | Selected library items are moved to trash |
What if you are willing to delete unwanted cloud photos?
In Google Photos, open Manage storage and review categories such as large photos and videos. Select only items you deliberately want removed from the cloud library and move them to trash. This frees Google Account storage by deleting those Photos items; it is not a way to keep them in the Google Photos library.
Google says deleted Photos items are permanently deleted after 30 days. After permanent deletion, Google Takeout cannot recover them. Storage recovery estimates may be unavailable in some situations or may be estimates, so do not count on a precise amount of space being freed. See Google’s storage-management guidance for iPhone and iPad.

Why does Google Photos storage still count some older uploads?
Google Account storage can be shared across Google services, with up to 15 GB available per account under current Google guidance. Current Storage saver uploads count toward that storage. There is a historical exception: Storage saver (formerly called High quality) and Express uploads from before June 1, 2021 do not count; Original quality uploads count regardless of upload date. These are Google’s stated product policies, not a guarantee of how much space a particular cleanup will recover. Details are in Google’s backup-quality help and Photos activity and storage policy.
Quick Recap
What to do if cleanup is not enough
- If you need every library item at its original quality, avoid Storage saver conversion and cloud deletion; consider Google’s option to buy additional storage.
- If you mainly need room on the device, use device cleanup only after backup is complete for the items selected.
- Keep the Google Account active and resolve quota problems. Google says Photos content may be deleted after two or more years of Photos inactivity, or if an account remains over its storage limit for two or more years; see its activity and storage policy.
