To make a newly attached VPS disk usable and keep it mounted after reboot, first identify the correct device, create a filesystem only if the disk is meant to be erased, mount it at a directory, then add its filesystem UUID to /etc/fstab and validate the entry with mount -a. Device names and provider attachment procedures vary, so do not assume a disk is /dev/sdb without checking.
Before you start: attach and identify the disk
Attach the volume through your VPS provider’s control panel or CLI, following that provider’s current instructions. Linux commands cannot substitute for a provider-specific attachment step, and the exact procedure depends on the host and service.
Once attached, inspect the device tree and filesystem identifiers:
lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,TYPE,FSTYPE,LABEL,UUID,MOUNTPOINTS
sudo blkidCompare the candidate device’s capacity, type, filesystem, UUID, and mount points with what you expect. Trace its parent and child devices: a disk may contain partitions, and either the whole disk or a partition might be the intended filesystem target. Confirm the candidate is not the root or boot device, swap, an existing data volume, or otherwise in use. Never select a device solely because its name looks like /dev/sdb.

If the newly attached volume does not appear, device information may not have refreshed yet; lsblk notes that udev information can lag recent device changes. Follow the discovery steps for your distribution and provider rather than guessing a device name.
Choose the filesystem target and type
For a simple single-purpose data disk, an administrator may create a filesystem directly on the whole block device or on a partition. There is no universal layout: consider whether you need multiple partitions or a partition table, whether the provider or organization requires a layout, whether a filesystem already exists, and whether the volume must work with another operating system. The mkfs documentation describes a partition as the usual target but also allows a block device.

For a general-purpose, Linux-only data volume without a conflicting provider or workload requirement, ext4 is a reasonable default—not a universal best choice. Existing filesystem requirements, cross-platform access, workload, and operational policy can change the decision. Use the filesystem-specific utility, such as mkfs.ext4, rather than the generic mkfs frontend.
Create the filesystem (destructive step)
Formatting writes a filesystem to the named device or partition and can destroy existing data. Before running a format command, verify the target again and stop if it contains data you need. If your confirmed layout calls for ext4 on a newly created partition, the command form is:

sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/CONFIRMED_PARTITIONReplace /dev/CONFIRMED_PARTITION with the partition you actually verified. If the deliberate layout uses the whole disk, use that confirmed device instead. Do not copy an example device name without checking your host.
Mount the filesystem for immediate use
Create a directory for the mount, mount the confirmed filesystem there, and check the result:

sudo mount /dev/CONFIRMED_DEVICE /mnt/data
findmnt /mnt/dataSubstitute the device or partition that contains the filesystem. Confirm that the expected filesystem is mounted at /mnt/data and check available space before pointing applications at it. A mount overlays the directory view while it is active: files that were already in the mount-point directory are hidden until the filesystem is unmounted. Choose the path with that in mind.
Make the mount persist across reboots
A manual mount lasts only for the current mounted state; it does not by itself configure a boot-time mount. Get the new filesystem’s UUID after formatting with lsblk --fs or sudo blkid, and confirm the UUID belongs to this volume. If filesystems have been cloned or copied, check for duplicate UUIDs before relying on one.

Back up the existing /etc/fstab, then add an entry using the actual UUID, mount point, filesystem type, options, dump field, and pass field. This is an illustrative ext4 data-volume pattern, not a literal UUID or a universal option set:
UUID=REPLACE_WITH_REAL_UUID /mnt/data ext4 defaults 0 2UUIDs (or labels) are generally more reliable in fstab than kernel device names such as /dev/sdX, which can change as storage devices are added or removed. The fields in an fstab entry specify the source, target, filesystem type, options, dump field, and pass field. Check your host’s documentation for options or boot handling needed by special devices or network-backed volumes.
Validate the entry before rebooting:
sudo mount -a
findmnt /mnt/data
lsblk -fIf mount -a reports an error or the expected filesystem does not appear at the target, correct the entry before restarting. Do not replace or delete unrelated existing entries. Mount behavior and boot integration can depend on the distribution and installed system utilities.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The disk is missing from
lsblk: Confirm that provider-side attachment completed, then follow the provider and distribution’s device-discovery guidance. Recently changed devices may not be reflected immediately in udev information. - You are unsure which device is safe to format: Stop. Compare size, type, mount points, filesystem details, and the parent/child layout in
lsblkandblkid. Identify root, boot, swap, and in-use volumes before proceeding; a guessed device name is not sufficient. - The format target is unclear: Check whether the intended filesystem belongs on the whole disk or a partition. Match the format command to the observed and intended layout rather than assuming every disk uses a partition such as
/dev/sdb1. - The mount command fails: Verify the source device or partition, filesystem type, and mount-point directory. Check that the filesystem was created on the target you are mounting and consult the host’s installed manual for the error and filesystem involved.
- The disk mounts now but not after reboot: Check that the
/etc/fstabsource UUID matches the filesystem, that the mount point and type are correct, and thatsudo mount -asucceeds. Avoid rebooting while validation fails. - The mount-point directory appears empty of its previous files: The mounted filesystem hides the underlying directory contents while attached. Unmounting reveals those files again; plan for this before using a directory that already contains data.
