To use Seed4J changes from the upstream main branch through the CLI, install the separately maintained experimental npm channel with npm install -g seed4j-cli@experimental. It provides selected snapshots rather than a live connection to every commit, and it is unofficial, retained only for a limited time, and not recommended for production generation. Use the stable channel for production work.
What Seed4J CLI Experimental does
Seed4J is an open-source modular code generator focused on Java and Spring Boot, with an emphasis on clean and hexagonal architecture. Seed4J CLI is a command-line tool for applying and managing Seed4J modules and generating projects from selected modules and features.
The CLI repository describes stable as the default channel and experimental as a separately operated, unofficial snapshot channel that follows Seed4J main. Experimental is for developers who intentionally want to try newer upstream changes; it does not mean that every upstream commit is immediately available as an npm release. The channel is not endorsed or supported by Seed4J maintainers, according to Renan Franca’s September 18, 2026 explanation of the integration. The seed4j-extension generation module is unavailable through this channel.
Install stable or experimental
The CLI itself requires Java 25 or higher and Node.js 22 or higher. The npm launcher runs the CLI’s Spring Boot JAR using the first java executable found on PATH. These are CLI prerequisites; projects generated by Seed4J can have separate runtime and toolchain requirements, including frontend-only projects. The CLI repository README documents these requirements and commands.

Choose the experimental tag explicitly when installing it; a plain install of seed4j-cli selects the stable default. The one-off npx command documented by the README uses the stable package.
How experimental snapshots reach npm
Renan Franca’s article, published September 18, 2026, describes a conditional publication process. A publisher selects a Seed4J main commit, verifies that upstream CI has passed, and checks whether the revision qualifies for a snapshot. The article says a revision published less than 60 days earlier is skipped; an older revision may qualify for a retention refresh. Eligible snapshots are built and checked with lint and Maven clean verify, then published to Sonatype’s Central Portal snapshot repository. A proposed dependency update is tested on the CLI’s experimental branch; an npm release is considered only after qualification and required checks.

Franca characterizes the cadence this way: “Every Monday, a new experimental version of Seed4J CLI can be released based on the latest state of Seed4J’s main branch.” The word “can” matters: this is not a promise of a weekly npm release. If a commit does not qualify or checks do not pass, no new package version is published.

How to identify the Seed4J commit in your CLI
Run seed4j --version and include its complete output when reporting an issue. Franca’s September 18, 2026 example shows the experimental output carrying a Seed4J version string with a commit identifier, which can distinguish the snapshot under discussion. The stable output identifies its Seed4J version as well.

Because npm tags can move, these example versions do not establish what experimental resolves to now. Use the output from your own installation to identify its version and provenance.

When experimental makes sense
Use experimental when you need to evaluate a newer Seed4J change through the CLI and can tolerate snapshot churn, limited retention, and the absence of official Seed4J maintainer support. Keep the full seed4j --version output with any generated-project notes or issue report so others can identify the exact snapshot. For production generation or a workflow that depends on stable availability and predictable support, use the stable install instead.
