You can follow Brazilian politics in English by pairing official Brazilian sources with English-language news and independent monitoring. Start with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) for election rules, process and validated results; use the Chamber of Deputies and Senate for congressional activity; then turn to reporting and analysis for context. When a claim matters, check it against the institution responsible for it.

Build a reliable English-language source routine

  1. Start with the TSE for elections. The TSE’s English portal brings together election information, statistics, news and material about the electoral process and disinformation. Its Election Process in Brazil explainer is a useful starting point for understanding how elections are administered and supervised.
  2. Check the relevant house for Congress. Brazil’s National Congress consists of the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate. The Chamber’s English overview of the National Congress explains the institution and parliamentary calendar. The Senate’s English services page points to news, senators’ official activity pages and video.
  3. Use English-language reporting to learn what is happening and why. Agência Brasil’s English politics section provides news coverage. The Washington Brazil Office’s 2026 election observatory describes a civil-society monitoring mission and a collaboration with The Brazilian Report for election content in English and Portuguese.
  4. Verify important claims at the source. Follow links to official records, identify which institution is responsible, and confirm names, dates and numbers. Reporting and monitoring can explain events, but they do not certify official election results.

Know what each source can establish

Source Best for What to check
TSE, the official electoral authority Election rules, process, statistics and official results Page or data date, and whether results are preliminary or validated
Chamber of Deputies or Federal Senate Activity, bills, votes, committees and members of that house Which house or committee has responsibility; current calendar and records
Agência Brasil Timely news and accessible explanations Publication date, original reporting and links to documents or officials
Washington Brazil Office observatory and The Brazilian Report collaboration Election monitoring and a civil-society perspective The observatory’s stated mission and perspective; corroborate factual claims with primary sources

These sources have different jobs. Official pages establish institutional facts and records; journalism reports developments; an observatory adds monitoring and interpretation. Comparing their authority, access to primary documents, timeliness and explanatory role is more useful than assigning an unsupported left-right score to every outlet.

Check election results carefully

For results, prefer TSE-originated information and note whether figures are still preliminary or have been validated. Google’s help page about Brazil election data says its feature uses TSE data compiled from Regional Electoral Courts and describes official results as definitive after validation by Electoral Justice. Google can be a convenient display, but the TSE is the authority for the underlying result.

Use Portuguese pages when English coverage runs out

The TSE maintains a separate Portuguese elections portal alongside its English portal. If an English page lacks a detail, use the original page or document and translate the relevant passage. A Portuguese-English dictionary can help with unfamiliar political vocabulary, but a translated word may not preserve context or connotation.

For consequential wording, compare the translation with the original passage and corroborate names, dates and figures against the responsible official source. Treat translated quotations especially carefully: a translation can make the words readable without establishing that their political meaning has been captured precisely.

Keep changing facts dated

Election calendars, candidates, polling, live results, officeholders, party alignments and legislative activity change. Check the date on a page before relying on it, and look for a current official record when the claim concerns the present.

For example, the TSE reported that by June 2026 more than 141 million voters—around 89% of the electorate able to vote—had fingerprints registered through its biometric system. That is a dated TSE figure, not an undated current count. A TSE guide for foreigners published in 2022 lists 81 senators and 513 deputies; treat those as figures in that guide rather than a current account of officeholders or party composition.
