If a football broadcast drops, switch to an official live text or score service, licensed audio commentary, or the club or league’s match centre while you identify what failed. First check whether the interruption affects only video, or also sound, the broadcaster’s app, and your internet connection. The fallback that works depends on the specific match, your location, and broadcast rights, so confirm coverage in an official listing.
Identify what has stopped working
A frozen picture does not necessarily mean the match itself is unavailable elsewhere. Check whether audio continues and whether other apps or websites load. If only the video has failed, move to text updates or audio. If scores or commentary in the service’s app are also stuck, investigate the connection before concluding that there is no alternative coverage.
- Video interrupted, audio still working: Keep listening if the commentary is clear, or open an official text or score service.
- Video and audio both interrupted: Check your connection, then try the broadcaster’s match listing, a league or club match centre, or another authorized audio service.
- Scores or app content not updating: Check that your internet connection is stable and refresh the service. Sky Sports gives these steps for scores that are not updating in its app: Sky Sports Scores app FAQ.
Choose a fallback for this match
Use the channel that is available for your fixture and location. A service that carries one match may not carry another, and television, online, and audio rights do not always overlap.

Live text and score updates
For Premier League coverage, BBC Sport provides live text commentary and score updates for selected matches; check its current coverage guide for the fixture you want: How to follow the Premier League on the BBC this weekend. Sky Sports’ Scores app is another option for following a match and receiving notifications, but it still depends on a working internet connection.

Licensed audio commentary
In the UK, the Premier League’s 2025/26–2028/29 radio-rights agreement assigns live audio coverage to BBC and talkSPORT for specified match slots. BBC Sport says the BBC will carry 209 Premier League matches per season on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds under that agreement; this is not a guarantee that a particular match is available to every listener. Check the official listings for the fixture: BBC Sport’s rights announcement and the Premier League’s announcement.
Some clubs also offer match-specific audio or follow-along services. For example, Liverpool’s guide for its West Ham fixture described free live audio commentary and a Match Centre. Treat that as an example for that game, not a standing offer for every Liverpool match or club: Liverpool FC’s match guide.

Radio, including a local station
If a station carries the match and you can receive it, radio may be a useful alternative to an internet stream. Ofcom notes that streaming needs buffering and says, “With either no delays, or very short ones, either AM/FM or digital radio offer the fastest way to follow the action.” That observation does not guarantee a station will have rights to your match or be receivable where you are. The ABC Help Centre’s live-sport listings, for instance, show that Australian radio access can depend on station, city, and fixture. An AM/FM radio is an optional backup only where local reception and match rights permit it.

Check rights and location before switching services
Do not assume a TV broadcast’s rights also cover the same match online or in an app. ESPN explains that temporary blurring or muting on ESPN.com can be required when its digital rights differ from its traditional television rights: ESPN Fan Support’s explanation. Availability also varies by country and specific fixture; UK Premier League audio arrangements and Australian radio listings should not be treated as worldwide guides.
