For a YouTube Live stereo stream, set the encoder’s outgoing audio sample rate to 44.1 kHz. If you are streaming in 5.1 surround sound, YouTube recommends 48 kHz instead. When primary and backup feeds are both enabled, set both to the same sample rate. Then test with representative audio and check the stream-health indicator in Live Control Room.

YouTube’s warning reads: “Please correct the sample rate for audio in the stream to 44.1 KHz.” The right fix depends on whether the stream is stereo or 5.1, and on whether a backup feed is configured. YouTube lists this warning and its other live-stream errors.

Fix the sample-rate warning step by step

  1. Read the warning in Live Control Room. Open the stream’s health or status information and note the exact message. YouTube says unresolved errors continue to appear; a continuing sample-rate warning means the stream configuration still needs attention. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.
  2. Identify the audio format. Confirm whether the stream is stereo or 5.1 surround. Do not choose a rate based on an upload preset or on the rate used in another stream.
  3. Set the encoder’s outgoing audio sample rate. For live stereo, choose 44.1 kHz. For live 5.1, choose 48 kHz. The relevant control may be in the encoder’s audio output, stream, or device settings; the label and menu location vary by software. YouTube does not prescribe one universal encoder menu path. Its live encoder recommendations distinguish stereo from 5.1.
  4. Match primary and backup feeds. If you send both, verify the outgoing audio sample-rate setting on each feed. YouTube specifically requires the rates to match.
  5. Run a representative pre-stream test. Include audio and movement similar to the planned event. Check the health indicator and any messages in Live Control Room before the event begins, then continue monitoring during the stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live. Review its live encoder guidance.

If the warning persists after you verify the outgoing rate and match the feeds, inspect the encoder’s audio routing and device configuration. YouTube’s guidance supports those checks but does not give app-specific hardware diagnostics for this warning.

Which sample rate should you use?

Use case YouTube live recommendation What to check
Live stereo 44.1 kHz Set the encoder’s outgoing audio rate to 44.1 kHz.
Live 5.1 surround 48 kHz Use the 5.1 settings for the chosen ingestion method; do not apply the stereo value automatically.
Primary and backup feeds Same rate on both feeds Compare the outgoing sample-rate settings for primary and backup.
Uploaded video 48 kHz recommended This is an upload recommendation, not a replacement for YouTube’s 44.1 kHz live-stereo guidance.

YouTube’s dedicated 5.1 guidance also specifies 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. For 5.1 over RTMP, YouTube supports AAC; for 5.1 over HLS, it supports AAC, AC3, and EAC3. These are 5.1-specific details, not requirements for the stereo sample-rate fix. See YouTube’s 5.1 surround guidance.

Do not confuse live audio with upload settings

YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings call for 48 kHz audio, while its live encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo live streams. They describe different workflows. Changing a live stereo stream to 48 kHz because an uploaded video uses that rate can leave the live warning unresolved. YouTube’s upload settings and live settings should be read separately.

RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations cover RTMP and RTMPS. Its separate HLS setup guidance gives the same sample-rate distinction: 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. HLS has additional segment and transport requirements, but a sample-rate warning alone is not a reason to change ingestion protocols. Check the settings for the protocol you already use. Read YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Common causes and what to do

  • Stereo output is not set to 44.1 kHz: change the encoder’s outgoing audio rate to 44.1 kHz, then test again.
  • Primary and backup use different rates: set both feeds to the same sample rate and verify each outgoing configuration.
  • The stream is actually 5.1: use YouTube’s 48 kHz live 5.1 recommendation rather than treating the stereo instruction as universal.
  • An upload preset is being applied to a live stream: distinguish the upload workflow’s 48 kHz recommendation from the live stereo recommendation of 44.1 kHz.
  • The warning remains after settings are corrected: review audio routing and device configuration in the encoder, then check the specific error and stream status in Live Control Room. YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish that buying an audio interface or other hardware fixes this warning.

Check stream health while live

Live Control Room shows stream status and specific error messages. Keep the health indicator visible during the event and respond to any new warning rather than assuming a successful pre-stream check settles every later issue. YouTube also provides live-stream metrics in its metrics guidance.
