What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
YouTube can fail on Windows 11 for several unrelated reasons: the PC may not have a working internet connection, Chrome or Edge may have corrupted site data, an extension may be blocking playback, or the browser may be unable to decode the video. The quickest fix is to identify which layer is failing instead of immediately resetting every network setting.
Start by testing another website and another YouTube video. If YouTube alone fails, work through the browser and YouTube checks first. If other sites also fail, troubleshoot Windows 11 networking before changing browser settings.
1. Check whether the problem is YouTube or the internet connection
First, open another website in the same browser. Then try a different YouTube video. The result usually points to the right fix:
| What you see | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| Other websites also fail | Wi-Fi, router, Windows networking, DNS, or your internet provider |
| YouTube loads but one video fails | That video, account restrictions, or a temporary YouTube problem |
| YouTube works in another browser | Browser settings, extensions, cache, codec, or protected media |
| The page loads but the player is blank, grey, black, or green | JavaScript, browser data, GPU acceleration, or video decoding |
| Audio plays but there is no picture | Graphics acceleration, codec, or decoder problems |
YouTube also recommends checking your connection speed and lowering the video quality if the selected resolution exceeds the available bandwidth. Other devices streaming over the same network can leave less bandwidth for the Windows 11 PC.

2. Confirm Wi-Fi is connected in Windows 11
Select the Network, Sound, or Battery icons on the taskbar. Confirm that Wi-Fi is turned on and that the selected network says Connected.
If the network is connected but websites do not load, restart the connection by turning Wi-Fi off, waiting a few seconds, and turning it back on. Also check whether another device on the same network can open YouTube.
For a broader Windows check, open Settings > Network & internet. Windows 11 can start Microsoft’s automated network diagnostic from the Get Help app. Search for the Network and Internet troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
3. Restart the modem, router, and PC
A router restart can clear a temporary connection or DNS failure. Use this order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Turn off the Windows 11 computer.
- Unplug the modem and, if separate, the wireless router.
- Wait about one minute.
- Reconnect the modem and wait for its status lights to stabilize.
- Reconnect the router and wait for its lights to stabilize.
- Start the computer and reload YouTube.
If YouTube still fails on every device, the fault may be with the modem, ISP, or YouTube rather than Windows 11.
4. Forget the Wi-Fi network and connect again
Windows can retain a damaged or outdated Wi-Fi profile. Remove it and create a fresh connection:
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
- Select Manage known networks.
- Select your Wi-Fi network and choose Forget.
- Return to the Wi-Fi list, select the network, and enter its password again.
This is less disruptive than a complete network reset and is worth trying when the PC connects inconsistently or reports that it is connected without internet access.
5. Test the connection to your router
A ping test separates a local Wi-Fi problem from an upstream internet problem.
- Select taskbar Search and type
command prompt. - Select Run as administrator, then select Yes.
- Run:
ipconfig
Find the Default Gateway under the active network adapter. It may look like 192.168.1.1. Then ping that address, replacing the example with your own gateway:

ping 192.168.1.1
Replies show that the PC can reach the router. If YouTube and other websites still do not work, investigate the modem, ISP, DNS, or another upstream service. If the ping fails, the immediate problem is more likely the Wi-Fi connection, adapter, router, or local network configuration.
6. Reset Windows network components from Command Prompt
When the connection is present but Windows networking behaves incorrectly, run Microsoft’s network repair commands in an elevated Command Prompt. Open Command Prompt as administrator as described above, then run these commands in this order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Restart Windows after the commands finish, then test YouTube again. The commands reset Winsock and TCP/IP settings, obtain a new IP address, and clear the local DNS cache.

If the commands do not help, Windows 11 has a more comprehensive option at Start > Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.
- Open Network reset.
- Select Reset now.
- Select Yes when prompted.
The PC restarts automatically. Network reset removes installed network adapters and returns their settings to default values. You may need to reinstall VPN software, reconfigure Hyper-V virtual switches, and reconnect to wireless networks. Windows may also change saved networks to the Public profile.
Do not use this as the first YouTube fix if only one browser or one website is affected.
8. Reload YouTube and check for a temporary service problem
For “Error loading the page, please try again.”, select Reload in the message or use the browser refresh button. YouTube says that, during a rare service interruption, it may load a minimal version of the page. The video, title, channel name, view count, and publish date may appear while Like, Share, Download, the description, and comments are missing. If reloading does not help, try again later.
For “Something went wrong. Refresh or try again later.”, YouTube recommends signing in, using the latest compatible browser, checking extensions and ad blockers, clearing cache and cookies, verifying DNS settings, and restarting the device.
Some videos may also require you to sign in. YouTube can restrict certain content for signed-out users, including some videos involving minors or some offline-download-related viewing attempts. That is an account or content requirement, not necessarily a Windows 11 fault.

9. Fix YouTube in Google Chrome
Enable JavaScript
A blank player or a page that does not behave normally can result from JavaScript being blocked.
- Select More (the three dots) in Chrome.
- Open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript.
- Select Sites can use JavaScript.
- Return to YouTube and select Reload.
Test YouTube in Incognito mode
Select More > New Incognito window, open YouTube, and test the same video. If playback works there, an extension, cached data, or another browser-profile setting is a strong suspect.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Disable extensions
- Select More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Turn all extensions off.
- Return to YouTube and select Reload.
- If playback returns, enable extensions one at a time.
- When the failing extension is identified, select Remove.
Ad blockers are worth checking, but it is not accurate to assume that every ad blocker causes YouTube to fail.
Clear Chrome’s YouTube-related data
- Select More > Delete browsing data.
- Choose a time range such as Last hour, Last 24 hours, or All time.
- Select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.
- Select Delete data.
Deleting cookies can sign you out of websites, so use a short time range first if you want to minimize the disruption.
Reset Chrome settings
If Chrome still cannot play YouTube, open More > Settings > Reset and cleanup > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings. This is more extensive than clearing the cache, so use it after testing Incognito mode and extensions.
Update Chrome
Select More > Update Google Chrome. If the option is absent, Google says Chrome is already current. Select Relaunch, return to YouTube, and select Reload.

Check graphics acceleration
- Open

- Restart Edge.
- Open
edge://gpuand check Video Decode.
The expected value when acceleration is working is Hardware accelerated. For more detail, reproduce the problem and open edge://media-internals. D3D11VideoDecoder or MediaFoundationVideoDecoder indicates hardware decoding; FFmpegVideoDecoder indicates software decoding.

Check codecs and HEVC
Edge supports H.264, VP8/VP9, and AV1. H.265/HEVC requires a valid HEVC Video Extension and a working decoder path. XAVC and XAVC HS are not supported by the built-in Windows playback stack on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If edge://gpu reports Failed to create HEVC decoder instance, License check for app failed (0xC00DB3B3), the HEVC extension or its license path is failing. Microsoft’s supported repair route is to reinstall the official HEVC Video Extensions package from the Microsoft Store.
To inspect installed HEVC packages, open PowerShell and run:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers *HEVC* | Select-Object Name, PackageFullName
Microsoft documents these removal commands for a damaged installation:
Get-AppxPackage *HEVC* | ForEach-Object { Remove-AppxPackage -Package $_.PackageFullName }
Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online |
Where-Object DisplayName -like "*HEVC*" |
ForEach-Object { Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackageName $_.PackageName }
Restart Windows before reinstalling the official Store extension. Removing AppX packages affects the system, so do not run these commands merely because ordinary YouTube videos are buffering.
Repair protected-content playback
If Edge displays “Playback of protected content is not enabled,” open edge://components and verify that Widevine Content Decryption Module is present. If the profile’s Widevine folder is damaged, Microsoft documents this PowerShell command:
Remove-Item -Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATAMicrosoftEdgeUser DataWidevineCdm" -Recurse -Force
Restart Edge afterward. This targets protected-media playback and is not a general solution for ordinary buffering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.11. Check the browser and YouTube in a controlled order
If you want the shortest practical sequence, use this order:
- Test another website and another YouTube video.
- Check the taskbar network status and restart the router.
- Reload YouTube and test an Incognito window or a different browser.
- Disable extensions, especially content-blocking extensions, and reload.
- Clear browser cache and cookies.
- Update or reset the browser.
- Run the Windows network commands.
- Investigate Edge GPU, codec, or Widevine diagnostics if the failure is Edge-only.
- Use Windows 11 Network reset only after recording VPN and virtual-network settings.
This order preserves useful evidence. For example, if YouTube works in Chrome but not Edge, resetting Windows networking is unlikely to solve the problem; Edge’s decoder or protected-media diagnostics are more relevant.

12. When changing DNS is appropriate
Changing DNS to Google’s 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 is often presented as a universal YouTube repair, but it is not. YouTube recommends verifying the preferred DNS servers and checking whether third-party software changed them; that does not mean a particular public DNS service fixes every playback problem.
Change DNS only when you have evidence of a DNS-resolution problem, such as websites failing to resolve while the router is reachable. Otherwise, start with the connection, browser, and playback checks above.
FAQ
Why does YouTube work in Chrome but not Edge on Windows 11?
The problem may be Edge’s graphics acceleration, video decoder, codec support, HEVC extension, or Widevine protected-media component. Check edge://gpu, edge://media-internals, and edge://components while reproducing the failure.
Why is the YouTube player black or green?
A black or green player can result from browser cache, an interfering extension, graphics acceleration, or a video-decoder problem. Test Incognito mode, disable extensions, clear browser data, and check Edge’s GPU and media diagnostic pages if Edge is affected.
Will resetting Windows 11 network settings delete my files?
Network reset is intended to reset network adapters and their settings, not personal files. However, it removes installed adapters, can require VPN or Hyper-V reconfiguration, and may change saved networks to the Public profile.
Do I need Adobe Flash to watch YouTube?
No. Flash Player support ended in 2021, and Flash media no longer plays in Chrome. Installing Flash is not a valid Windows 11 or YouTube repair.
Why does YouTube ask me to sign in?
Some content may be unavailable to signed-out users, including certain videos involving minors or some offline-download-related viewing attempts. In that situation, signing in may be required rather than fixing a Windows or browser error.
The Bottom Line
Fix YouTube in layers: verify the Windows 11 connection, restart the router, test YouTube without extensions, clear browser data, and update the browser. Use the elevated network commands when Windows networking is suspect. If only Edge fails, inspect its decoder, GPU, HEVC, and Widevine components before performing a disruptive Windows network reset.
