Start with the exact, timestamped stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare it with your encoder logs and the VPS’s outbound connection to YouTube. A VPS hosted in India is not, by itself, evidence of the cause: the break may be in the encoder, the network path, the ingest settings, or—if your podcast sends a feed to the VPS first—the separate connection from your studio to the VPS.
Why does my YouTube live stream keep disconnecting?
A disconnection is a symptom, not a diagnosis. YouTube’s Live Control Room reports stream status and live analytics, and its stream-health messages can narrow the cause—for example, a bitrate or format problem. They show what YouTube observed, not necessarily which component caused it. Record the wording and time before changing settings. YouTube’s streaming error guidance recommends checking encoder health and, if the encoder appears healthy, testing the outbound connection.
For a podcast VPS, distinguish the two possible network legs:
- Studio to VPS: relevant if your local encoder sends audio and video to the VPS, which then forwards the stream.
- VPS to YouTube: the VPS’s outbound path to the YouTube ingest endpoint.
If the first leg fails, a healthy connection from the VPS to YouTube cannot repair the feed it is receiving. If the VPS encoder is sending directly to YouTube, focus on its encoder and outbound path instead.

How do I stop YouTube Live from disconnecting on my VPS?
1. Capture evidence at the time of the failure
- Write down the interruption time in UTC and the duration, if known.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s health/status details and copy the exact message. Note whether YouTube reports missing video, connection trouble, or a configuration warning.
- At the same timestamp, check the encoder’s logs, preview, and CPU load. If local archiving is enabled, check whether the archive has a gap or damaged audio/video.
- If your setup has a studio-to-VPS feed, check its sender and receiver logs separately from the VPS-to-YouTube encoder logs.
Matching timestamps help separate a source or encoder failure from an outbound network interruption. A dashboard warning alone does not establish that the VPS provider is at fault.
2. Confirm the stream settings and leave network headroom
Check the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate configured in the encoder against YouTube’s current streaming settings guidance. Select the bitrate recommendation for the actual codec and video mode; do not copy a figure for a different resolution or frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are recommendations for those specific modes, not a guarantee that a route will remain stable.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity unused. The VPS needs sustained outbound capacity for the selected stream bitrate plus that headroom; a shared network can constrain the capacity available to one stream. If the incoming video is insufficient or the chosen bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain, reduce the bitrate or resolution to a mode the connection can carry, then observe stream health again.

Inspect the encoder preview, logs, CPU load, and any local archive around the failure. If the preview freezes, the archive has a gap, or the encoder reports overload, address the source or encoding pipeline first. If these indicators remain healthy while YouTube reports incoming-video or connection trouble, measure the VPS’s outbound connectivity during the relevant period. Preserve the measurements and timestamps for the provider.

4. Verify the YouTube ingest endpoint and protocol
Make sure the encoder uses the intended YouTube ingestion server and the matching connection URL/path from the stream configuration, rather than a stale or mismatched endpoint. If you use RTMPS, follow YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion requirements: the protocol is RTMPS, the URL must use a valid YouTube endpoint and application path, and the documented connection uses port 443. Check that the VPS or host firewall permits the required outbound connection. YouTube’s endpoint documentation does not establish how a particular VPS provider configures its firewall.
5. Rehearse recovery before the podcast
- Run a rehearsal with representative motion, speech, music, and the planned resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Start the encoder early enough to verify the YouTube preview and stream-health status before the program begins.
- Confirm that any local archive is actually being written and can be played back.
- If you have a backup encoder, test the handoff. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable to confirm that the backup takes over.
Do this test before an event, not during one. A configured backup is not useful unless the transition works in practice.

6. Escalate with data, then consider a location change
Give the VPS provider UTC interruption times, relevant encoder logs, YouTube’s exact Live Control Room message, and outbound-route measurements. Ask whether the provider can investigate the observed incident and sustained outbound capacity. If the studio-to-VPS leg is involved, provide evidence from that leg as well.
