When OBS reports “encoding overloaded,” first determine whether it is falling behind on rendering, encoding, or sending frames to YouTube. On a budget PC, start with free changes: close unnecessary GPU-heavy programs, simplify scenes, lower output resolution or frame rate, and test again. Lowering bitrate alone is not a general fix for encoding load; it mainly helps when the network cannot sustain the stream.
Identify what is falling behind
“Encoding overloaded” is a performance warning, not a diagnosis of one faulty component. OBS uses GPU resources to render and composite scenes while the computer also encodes video and runs other work. A stream can look choppy for different reasons, so distinguish OBS rendering or encoding lag from dropped frames and disconnections before changing settings.
- Rendering or encoding lag: OBS cannot keep up with the configured scene or output. Investigate system workload, scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, and encoder choice.
- Dropped frames or disconnections: The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Investigate upload capacity and network stability separately.
OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide (dated June 12, 2021) describes reducing the work OBS and the rest of the system must do. Its connection troubleshooting guide (dated September 30, 2024) explains that dropped frames generally point to a connection-to-ingest problem or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate. The exact OBS statistics and log-reading steps can vary by version; use the Stats window and current OBS guidance to see whether rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames are increasing during a representative test.

- Close known, unnecessary GPU-heavy programs. Quit applications that are using substantial GPU resources, then test OBS again. Do not close processes you do not recognize or need for the stream.
- Simplify the OBS scene. Temporarily remove nonessential overlays, animated elements, browser sources, filters, and other compositing work. A static meditation image with audio may need less scene work than a scene with many active sources, but the improvement depends on the PC and scene.
- Reduce output resolution. If the current output is unstable, try a lower output resolution, such as 720p rather than 1080p. Lower resolution can reduce GPU resource needs. Changing the base canvas is more disruptive because sources may need repositioning; OBS reserves that step for systems with very limited GPU resources.
- Try 30 fps if you are using 60 fps. OBS recommends trying a lower frame rate when the system cannot sustain the current one. For meditation visuals with little motion, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point to test, not a guaranteed fix or a meditation-specific official requirement.
- On Windows, launch OBS as administrator. OBS says this resolves GPU-overload issues in many cases, but it is a troubleshooting step rather than a guarantee.
- Retest with the real stream setup. Include the intended audio, scene, and representative movement before the scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance says tests should include audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Check OBS behavior and YouTube’s preview and stream-health information.
Choose YouTube settings the PC can sustain
YouTube’s current live encoder guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, with CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and Rec. 709 for typical SDR. Use a codec supported by the installed encoder; these options do not mean every budget PC can encode every format. Recheck the current guide before going live because YouTube’s requirements and tables can change.

For H.264, YouTube’s current table gives the following video bitrate figures. They are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a measure of your PC’s capacity or internet speed.

Those H.264 figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings page, retrieved October 3, 2026. Use the matching row for your resolution and frame rate; do not extrapolate these figures to H.265 or AV1. If 1080p is unstable, 720p30 is a practical lower-load starting point to test, balanced against the image quality you want.

Do not use bitrate as a substitute for reducing encoding work
Lowering resolution or frame rate reduces the processing workload OBS describes. Lowering bitrate principally helps when the connection cannot sustain the configured stream; it does not necessarily solve an encoding overload. YouTube’s encoder settings guide recommends testing with representative content, while its live streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. For example, if your selected bitrate is 8 Mbps, plan for at least 9.6 Mbps of available upload capacity by that headroom rule, with additional allowance if other household or office devices upload at the same time.
When a hardware upgrade is justified
Consider hardware only after the free changes and representative retest. If OBS still shows encoding or GPU-resource trouble, check whether a compatible GPU hardware encoder could move encoding work off the CPU. Hardware encoding does not eliminate GPU demand for rendering and compositing, and quality and performance vary by hardware generation.

OBS’s hardware encoding guide (dated January 11, 2022) identifies GeForce 750 Ti or newer as supported for NVENC in that guide. Treat this as a documented compatibility floor in that OBS page, not a current buying recommendation. Verify the exact card against current OBS compatibility, your power supply, case clearance, motherboard, and budget before purchasing. No specific model or price is established here; do not buy a graphics card unless the observed bottleneck supports it. A compatible GPU with NVENC is the relevant category to investigate, not a guaranteed cure.
If the problem is dropped frames rather than OBS rendering or encoding lag, an upgrade to the GPU may not address it. Check the connection and available upload bandwidth first.

Common problems and what to check
- OBS still reports encoding overload after lowering bitrate: Bitrate primarily addresses network capacity. Reduce scene work, output resolution, or frame rate, and check whether OBS reports rendering or encoding lag.
- OBS looks fine, but YouTube shows dropped frames: Check upload stability and leave the recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. A speed test can help assess upload capacity, but it does not guarantee stability throughout a broadcast.
- The preview is choppy only with a complex scene: Remove or disable nonessential sources and test with the intended audio and movement. Scene complexity competes for resources, but no single source is established as the cause without observing the system.
- A hardware encoder is available but overload persists: It can move encoding work off the CPU, but the GPU still has to render and composite scenes. Simplify the scene and lower output demands if GPU-related lag remains.
- The test works but a long stream fails later: Repeat the test for a representative duration and monitor OBS and YouTube stream health. A short successful test cannot establish that a PC or connection will remain stable indefinitely.
Final pre-stream check
- Run a test using the actual scene, intended audio, and representative movement.
- Check OBS for rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames rather than treating all choppiness as one problem.
- Confirm YouTube preview and stream health before the scheduled stream.
- Keep upload capacity available beyond the selected bitrate; YouTube recommends 20% headroom.
- Only record a local archive if the PC can sustain that added work. YouTube setup guidance suggests confirming that archive files grow, but recording can add load and its impact depends on the machine.
For copyright and monetization, use content you have the right to stream and review YouTube’s current live streaming guidance and applicable channel policies. A stable encoder does not establish that a stream is eligible for monetization; reused-content decisions depend on YouTube’s policies and the channel’s content.
