If your 24/7 YouTube music stream sounds distorted, first find where the distortion enters: the prerecorded file, your streaming software’s output, or YouTube playback. If the source is clean but the software’s output reaches 0 dBFS, reduce gain before encoding or apply suitable limiting, then test again. YouTube’s audio bitrate and sample-rate recommendations help with ingest compatibility; changing them will not repair audio that is already clipped.
Why does prerecorded music sound clipped on YouTube Live?
Digital clipping is a peak-level problem. When the signal reaches or exceeds digital full scale, the waveform is cut off and can sound harsh or crackly. OBS explains that audio in the final stream or recording must remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping. The distortion may already be in a music file, be introduced in the software signal path, or appear only during YouTube playback. Those are different causes, so check them separately.
Do not treat every audio problem as clipping. YouTube can also report ingest configuration issues such as an unsupported or unexpected codec, bitrate, sample rate, or channel count. Such warnings deserve attention, but they do not by themselves show that peaks are too hot.
How to find where the clipping starts
- Listen to the original files. Check the loudest parts, track changes, and playlist transitions. If a file is distorted before it enters the streaming software, replace it or repair it at the source if you can. An encoder setting cannot restore waveform detail that has already been clipped.
- Watch the software’s audio meter during loud passages. In OBS, play the loudest representative material and watch the relevant mixer meter. If the signal is hitting the digital ceiling, reduce the source or mixer gain before encoding. A limiter may also be appropriate; after applying processing, check the output again rather than assuming the limiter fixed it.
- Compare three checkpoints. Listen to the original file, a local recording or output from the streaming software, and the actual YouTube playback. If the source is clean but the local output is distorted, investigate the software signal path. If both are clean but YouTube playback is not, check YouTube’s ingest health and compare another playback checkpoint before changing source files.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages. Match each warning to the setting it names: codec, bitrate, sample rate, channels, audio-stream count, or a primary/backup mismatch. YouTube’s live-stream health messages distinguish among configuration problems; a warning is not automatically a clipping diagnosis.
- Test representative material before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual event. For a continuous music stream, include loud tracks and transitions, and listen to the actual stream playback. Recheck after changing playlist sources because a short test cannot cover files or transitions it did not include.
Which audio settings should a YouTube music stream use?
YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, reviewed October 3, 2026, recommends AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), 44.1 kHz for stereo, and 128 kbps for stereo. These are ingest recommendations, not a cure for clipping. If the source or software output is already distorted, changing bitrate or sample rate will not reconstruct clean peaks.

| Setting | YouTube stereo guidance | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|

| Audio bitrate | 128 kbps | Stereo audio ingest |
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance alongside the messages shown for your particular stream. If you send primary and backup streams, check for mismatches between them rather than assuming the same audio issue affects both.
How to reduce clipping in OBS
Lower the level before encoding
When the OBS meter shows peaks reaching the ceiling, turn down the relevant source or mixer gain before the encoder. Then play the loudest material again and confirm the output remains below 0 dBFS. OBS documents −9 dBFS as a Permitted Maximum Level marker on its meter and explains the margin rationale; it is not a universal target for every music stream. OBS also cautions that its meter display has limitations, so use it as one checkpoint, not as proof that the viewer-facing stream is clean.

Use limiting only when it fits the signal path
A limiter can control peaks in software, but it cannot repair clipping already baked into a file. Use appropriate processing for your chain, then listen to a local output and the YouTube stream. For prerecorded audio played in software, start with the files and software gain or limiting; a hardware limiter is relevant only if the audio actually passes through a suitable physical audio chain.

| What you hear or see | Likely place to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The original file sounds distorted | Source recording or mastered file | Replace or repair the source. Encoder changes cannot restore clipped peaks. |
| The original is clean, but OBS’s loudest output distorts or reaches the ceiling | Source level, mixer gain, or processing before encoding | Reduce gain or use suitable limiting, then recheck the output. |
| The source and local output sound clean, but YouTube playback does not | Ingest configuration or playback checkpoint | Review YouTube health messages and compare the actual stream playback with the local output. |
| YouTube reports an audio warning | The specific configuration named in the warning | Check its codec, bitrate, sample rate, channel count, audio-stream count, or primary/backup consistency. Do not assume the warning means peak clipping. |
| A test sounds clean, but a later playlist section clips | Untested track or transition | Check that material’s source and output levels; test representative loud sections and transitions after playlist changes. |
Protecting a continuous music stream
A clean short test does not establish that every file in a 24/7 playlist is clean. Include representative loud material and transitions in the pre-stream check, and revisit the meter and stream-health indicators after changing sources. If YouTube’s status identifies an audio configuration issue, fix that setting separately from peak level.

For a prerecorded music channel, also make sure you have the rights needed to use each recording and understand YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules. A technically clean stream does not establish permission to broadcast the music.
