If pacman still works, complete a full system upgrade and rebuild yay from its current AUR PKGBUILD with makepkg -si. Do not try to fix it by symlinking a different libalpm version under the missing name.
Why yay reports a missing libalpm library
yay is unable to start because its executable was built to request a particular shared-library SONAME, and the loader cannot find that name on your system. A common cause is that yay was built against an older libalpm ABI than the one now available after a system or pacman update.
The .12 in this message identifies the library name requested by that executable; it does not establish which libalpm SONAME is current on your machine. In a documented Arch incident in 2021, pacman 6.0.1-2 provided libalpm SONAME 13 while the installed yay 10.3.1-2 looked for libalpm.so.12. Later reports in the same error family mention libalpm.so.15, so diagnose the missing name shown by your own error rather than assuming a particular version is current. Rebuild yay if pacman works
The durable fix is to rebuild yay against the libalpm ABI installed on your system. First bring Arch fully up to date, then build and install the current AUR package.

Run a full system upgrade:
sudo pacman -SyuArch is a rolling-release distribution. Its guidance is to use a full upgrade when refreshing package databases; avoid
pacman -Sy packageor synchronizing databases and then installing a package without upgrading the system. ArchWiki: partial upgrades are unsupported. -
Obtain the current
yayPKGBUILD from the AUR package page and enter the directory containingPKGBUILD. Follow the AUR package instructions for obtaining its build files; the directory must contain the current recipe before continuing.Rank #2

Build and install it:
makepkg -siThe
-soption installs required dependencies from your configured repositories, and-iinstalls the package after a successful build. The ArchWiki explains the makepkg options and build process in its makepkg guide. -
Check that the command starts:
yay --versionIf the dynamic-linker error is gone, the rebuilt executable can start. This check does not by itself verify that every AUR operation will succeed.

If Git or build tools are missing
Install required tools from the official repositories as part of a supported full system upgrade, not after a stand-alone database refresh. If necessary, use the traditional AUR build process with makepkg once the required tools and dependencies are available. In the 2021 report of this exact error, an Arch forum moderator advised rebuilding yay after the pacman ABI change. Arch Linux forum discussion.
Why a symlink is not a safe fix
Do not point a newer libalpm.so.N at the missing libalpm.so.12 name to make the loader accept it. A SONAME change can mark an ABI that is not backward-compatible; a symlink changes the name the loader sees, not the interfaces the old executable expects. ArchWiki warns against this approach for missing shared libraries. Rebuild the dependent application for the installed ABI instead. ArchWiki guidance on system maintenance and library breakage.

If pacman also fails to start
The rebuild procedure assumes pacman can update the system and install build dependencies. If pacman itself fails, do not proceed as though this were only a yay rebuild problem: the appropriate recovery depends on the pacman error and installation state.
