Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The reliable fix is to match wkhtmltopdf to your Ubuntu release and CPU architecture, then use one package source consistently. First identify the release, architecture, package origin, and complete error. Ubuntu’s own archive is usually the simplest route; an upstream wkhtmltox package is an alternative only when its Ubuntu release and architecture match your machine. Do not mix libraries from another Ubuntu release to silence an unmet-dependency message.
Start with four facts about your system
Most installation failures are not caused by the renderer itself. They come from selecting a package for the wrong Ubuntu release, architecture, or repository. Record these details before changing packages:
cat /etc/os-release
printf 'Architecture: '; dpkg --print-architecture
printf 'Kernel architecture: '; uname -m
apt-cache policy wkhtmltopdf
The first command identifies the release codename, such as noble (24.04), jammy (22.04), or focal (20.04). dpkg --print-architecture normally reports amd64 on Intel and AMD 64-bit systems, or arm64 on many ARM servers. The final command shows whether APT has a candidate version and which repository supplies it.
Save the complete error as well. A line such as “Unable to locate package,” “unmet dependencies,” “wrong architecture,” or “dependency problems – leaving unconfigured” points to a different fix.

Choose one compatible installation route
| Route | When it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu archive | Your release has a package in its configured repositories and you want APT to resolve runtime libraries. | The build may be compiled without wkhtmltopdf’s patched Qt, so some features can differ from upstream packages. |
Upstream wkhtmltox package |
You need the upstream build and can select the exact Ubuntu release and architecture listed on the project downloads page. | It still needs system libraries. Extracting the files does not remove those runtime requirements. |
The project’s stable release is 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020. Its download table lists builds for Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy, 20.04 Focal, 18.04 Bionic, and 16.04 Xenial, with architecture availability varying by release. If your major release is not listed, the project suggests trying an older listed LTS, but that is a compatibility choice—not permission to mix repositories. Ubuntu also publishes its own package: Noble’s current metadata lists 0.12.6-2build2 in Universe, while Jammy’s source package is 0.12.6-2.
Install Ubuntu’s package without mixing repositories
Enable the correct component
On Ubuntu, wkhtmltopdf is in the Universe component. Check your configured sources and refresh their indexes:
sudo apt update
apt-cache policy wkhtmltopdf
If the policy output has no candidate and Universe is not enabled, enable it for the current release, then refresh:
sudo add-apt-repository universe
sudo apt update
Do not copy a Jammy, Focal, or Debian repository line into a Noble system. A repository entry must use the codename shown by /etc/os-release.

Install and inspect the dependency plan
apt-cache depends wkhtmltopdf
sudo apt install wkhtmltopdf
Ubuntu’s package metadata shows dependencies on the C library, C++ runtime, Qt Core, GUI, Network, PrintSupport, SVG, Widgets, Qt WebKit, and related runtime components. Let APT obtain all of them from the same Ubuntu release. If APT proposes removing a large set of unrelated packages or switching releases, cancel with n and inspect your sources instead of accepting the transaction.
Verify the binary and perform a trusted smoke test
wkhtmltopdf --version
printf '<!doctype html><html><body><h1>wkhtmltopdf test</h1></body></html>' > /tmp/wkhtml-test.html
wkhtmltopdf /tmp/wkhtml-test.html /tmp/wkhtml-test.pdf
file /tmp/wkhtml-test.pdf
Keep the exact version output with your bug report. A successful conversion proves that this binary can render a trusted local document; it does not prove that headers, footers, JavaScript, fonts, or remote pages work in your application.
Install an upstream package safely
Download only the wkhtmltox file whose Ubuntu codename and architecture match the target host. Check the file before installing:
dpkg-deb -f ./wkhtmltox_*.deb Package Version Architecture
Install a local Debian package through APT so it can resolve dependencies:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallsudo apt install ./wkhtmltox_<matching-release>_<architecture>.deb
Replace the bracketed portion with the actual filename; do not paste a package built for another release. If APT reports a versioned library that is unavailable on your Ubuntu release, stop. Adding an older release’s library repository can create a partially upgraded system. Select the Ubuntu archive package, obtain a build intended for your release, or use an isolated environment whose base image matches the package.
If you must inspect an archive without installing it, extraction is possible, but it is only a controlled-environment fallback:
mkdir -p /tmp/wkhtmltox-extracted
dpkg-deb -x ./wkhtmltox_*.deb /tmp/wkhtmltox-extracted
The extracted executable still requires its shared libraries, fonts, certificates, and other runtime files. Extraction is not a dependency fix.
Fix the common error messages
“Unable to locate package wkhtmltopdf”
- Run
cat /etc/os-releaseand confirm that the configured repository uses that codename. - Run
sudo apt updateand read errors instead of ignoring them. - Check
apt-cache policy wkhtmltopdf. If there is no candidate, verify that Universe is enabled. - On an end-of-life Ubuntu release, the normal mirrors may no longer carry current indexes. Upgrade the operating system or use a package explicitly built for the release; do not substitute another release’s repository.
“Package has unmet dependencies”
First look for mixed codenames, disabled components, held packages, or a different architecture:
grep -R --line-number --no-filename '^deb ' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d 2>/dev/null
apt-mark showhold
dpkg --print-architecture
apt-cache policy libc6 libstdc++6 qtbase5-dev
Remove or correct third-party entries that target another Ubuntu release, then refresh. If an interrupted transaction is the only problem, APT can finish configuration:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
Review the proposed changes before confirming. These commands cannot supply a library that your release does not provide; they only complete a consistent transaction.

“Wrong architecture” or “does not support architecture”
Compare the package metadata from dpkg-deb -f with dpkg --print-architecture. An amd64 package cannot be installed on an arm64 host merely by renaming it. Choose a package published for the host architecture, use Ubuntu’s package if available, or run the renderer in a matching virtual machine or container.
dpkg leaves the package unconfigured
This usually means the package was installed directly while dependencies were missing. Run sudo dpkg --configure -a, inspect the first missing dependency, and let APT repair the transaction. Reinstalling the same .deb repeatedly or using dpkg --force-all can leave a less recoverable system.
“error while loading shared libraries”
Identify the executable actually being run:
command -v wkhtmltopdf
readlink -f "$(command -v wkhtmltopdf)"
wkhtmltopdf --version
ldd "$(command -v wkhtmltopdf)" | grep 'not found' || true
Two installations can place different binaries in /usr/bin, /usr/local/bin, or an application directory. Remove the path ambiguity, then install the missing runtime packages from the same release rather than downloading individual shared-object files from an unrelated system.
“Compiled without patched Qt”
This message describes a build characteristic, not necessarily a failed installation. Upstream explains that patched Qt is required for some wkhtmltopdf features and that many Linux distributions compile without those patches. Test the specific behavior your application needs—such as a header, footer, table of contents, or JavaScript-dependent layout—against the exact binary shown by wkhtmltopdf --version. Do not assume that two packages with the same program name have identical behavior.
If the required feature fails, compare an Ubuntu archive build with a matching upstream build in a controlled test. The available documentation does not establish that every feature works on every Ubuntu package, so keep the result tied to the binary and release you tested.
The command works manually but fails from a service
- Use the absolute path returned by
command -v wkhtmltopdf. - Run the service under its real account and verify access to temporary directories, fonts, certificates, and the input files.
- Capture standard error and exit status; a web application may hide the renderer’s diagnostic output.
- Keep environment differences visible:
PATH, locale, proxy settings, and sandbox or container restrictions can change the result.
Security and reliability boundaries
Do not treat a successful installation as a security review. The wkhtmltopdf project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server on which it is run!” Ubuntu security notice USN-6232-1, published July 20, 2023, describes a same-origin-policy flaw that could expose sensitive information when specially crafted HTML is processed. Its fixed-version rows apply to the specific older Ubuntu releases named in that notice; do not copy those version numbers to Noble, Jammy, or another release without checking the applicable package status.
Render trusted, sanitized input in a restricted account or isolated workload. Limit network access when remote resources are unnecessary, control temporary-file permissions, and avoid passing secrets in page URLs or HTML. A PDF generated without an error can still contain data that the source page was allowed to fetch.
Performance and operational checks
Make repeated conversions predictable
- Use a fixed, tested binary path and record its version during deployment.
- Install the fonts your documents require; missing fonts often appear as layout defects rather than installation errors.
- Set explicit timeouts in the calling application and capture the renderer’s exit code and stderr.
- Use local, trusted assets where possible. Remote CSS, images, and JavaScript add network and failure points.
- Test representative documents after every package or Ubuntu upgrade, especially if you depend on headers, footers, JavaScript, or complex fonts.
When to stop investing in wkhtmltopdf
The upstream status page records that Qt 4 has been unsupported since 2015 and its WebKit had not been updated since 2012 in that 2020 status account. For a new system, compare a maintained browser’s printing or PDF API against your document requirements. The available status information does not provide a current feature-by-feature migration matrix, so validate pagination, CSS support, fonts, authentication, and performance with your own documents before switching.
A repeatable decision checklist
- Identify the Ubuntu codename and CPU architecture.
- Choose either the Ubuntu archive or an upstream package; do not combine their dependencies casually.
- Confirm the package candidate or package metadata before installing.
- Let APT resolve dependencies from the same release and review proposed removals.
- Verify the binary path and
wkhtmltopdf --version. - Run a minimal conversion using trusted local HTML.
- Exercise the exact feature your application needs, including any patched-Qt-dependent behavior.
- Sanitize untrusted HTML, isolate the renderer, and retain logs for future upgrades.
Or skip the browser setup
If your real goal is a clean image or PDF of a web page rather than maintaining a Qt-based renderer, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, with options for full-page capture, lazy-loaded images, CSS-selector elements, device and retina settings, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocking rules, cookies, headers, geolocation, PDF margins and page ranges, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture, and usage reporting.
For a one-call capture, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:

Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, with every feature on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Ubuntu package suffix “-2build2” indicate?
It is the package revision shown in Ubuntu Noble’s package metadata, not a different wkhtmltopdf major release. Always read it together with the Ubuntu codename and architecture.
Can I keep both an Ubuntu and upstream build installed?
You can store separate binaries, but make the selected path explicit and test the one your application invokes. Keeping overlapping files in system paths makes version and library diagnosis harder.
Why should I retain the complete APT error?
The first dependency or repository error usually identifies the broken release, architecture, or package origin; later lines are often consequences.
The Bottom Line
Match the package to Ubuntu and the host architecture, keep dependencies within one release and package origin, verify the exact binary, and test the feature you actually need. If the renderer is only a means to obtain clean page images or PDFs, ScreenshotNeo can remove the local browser-and-Qt maintenance burden.
