If wkhtmltopdf exits with Exit with code 1 due to network error: ContentNotFoundError, find the first failed resource in its stderr or wrapper log, then verify that exact file or URL is reachable from the machine and process generating the PDF. The message identifies a resource-loading failure, not which resource caused it. Missing images and relative CSS or icon paths are documented triggers; there is no single fix established for every version or setup.
What the ContentNotFoundError means
wkhtmltopdf builds a PDF by loading the HTML document and the resources it references. A resource can be an image, stylesheet, font, script, or another document. When a referenced item cannot be found or loaded, the renderer may finish its progress display with “Done” and still exit with code 1. The final status does not identify the failing resource or prove that the PDF is complete.
Reports involving wkhtmltopdf 0.12.5 and 0.12.1 associate this error with unavailable resources, including an image URL, relative CSS/icon paths, and a JavaScript resource. Those historical reports do not establish behavior for every packaged build or current environment. The upstream repository is archived and read-only, as noted on the relevant issue page. See the wkhtmltopdf issue reports.
Find the resource that failed
- Save the complete command and stderr. For a direct invocation, capture both output streams:
wkhtmltopdf input.html output.pdf 2>wkhtmltopdf.stderr. If a wrapper launches the process, obtain the full command and log from the failing job rather than relying only on the application’s summary. - Search the log for a failed-load message. Look for lines such as
Warning: Failed to loadorError: Failed to load. Record the entire URL or path and any accompanying HTTP status, file error, or connection detail. - Check whether the failure occurred before or after “Done.” Progress output is not a resource-by-resource success report. Use the earlier warning or error, not the final progress word, to choose what to investigate.
- Make a short list of candidate resources. For each one, note its type, how the HTML refers to it, where wkhtmltopdf runs, what response or access problem the log shows, and whether the asset is essential. This helps distinguish an image problem from a stylesheet or path-resolution problem.
If the log contains no useful URL, simplify the input and test by removing or replacing one class of optional assets at a time—first images, then stylesheets, fonts, or scripts. A resource-specific failure may become visible once the document is reduced. Do not infer that a particular class is responsible just because it is a known example.

Test the failed URL or path from the PDF process context
A resource working in your browser does not establish that the wkhtmltopdf process can access it. Test from the same host or container, with the same relevant network and authentication conditions, where the PDF job runs.
For an absolute HTTP or HTTPS URL
- Request the exact URL and check whether it still exists and returns the expected resource.
- Follow the redirect chain. The destination may require credentials or may not be accessible to the PDF process.
- Check DNS resolution, outbound network access, firewall rules, and TLS or certificate behavior in that runtime environment.
- If the site requires authentication, confirm that the PDF process has the needed access; a URL that opens in an authenticated browser session may not be public to a separate process.
These are diagnostic checks, not a claim that any one is the cause of every ContentNotFoundError. An issue report ties one reproduction to an unavailable image or resource URL. Compare with the reported image/resource case.

For a relative path or file URL
Relative references depend on the HTML document’s base location and the renderer’s execution context. This is especially important when an application or wrapper writes temporary HTML into a different directory from the source template. A path that was valid relative to the template may point somewhere else when the generated document is rendered.
- Inspect the actual generated HTML and identify the base location used to resolve each relative reference.
- Check the process working directory and whether a wrapper renders from a temporary directory.
- Use an absolute, valid path or configure the correct base/asset location for the generated document.
- Confirm that the wkhtmltopdf process can read the file under its runtime permissions.
A BookStack issue report describes generated CSS with relative icon paths; the reporter said removing those references stopped that reproduction. That is evidence for checking path resolution, not a universal fix. See the BookStack report.

Fix the specific asset problem
Choose a fix only after identifying the failing reference and the context in which it is resolved.
- Resource removed or URL wrong: Correct the URL or restore the referenced file. If the asset is optional, remove the stale reference or provide a valid fallback.
- Relative path resolves from the wrong directory: Make the reference absolute or supply the correct base location used by the generated HTML. Check wrapper temporary-file behavior before changing the original template.
- Remote resource is inaccessible: Address the specific access condition shown by the test—such as network reachability, redirect destination, authentication, or certificate access—or make the required asset available to the rendering process.
- Several assets are possible candidates: Remove one class at a time and rerun the same input until the error changes. Restore the assets in small groups to narrow the cause without making unrelated document changes.
- Wrapper behavior is uncertain: If practical, run the exact generated HTML and command directly outside the wrapper. A changed result can point toward wrapper configuration or temporary-file path behavior, but does not by itself prove which setting is wrong.
Does –load-error-handling ignore fix it?
Do not treat --load-error-handling ignore as a general remedy. A 2014 issue report describes the same exit message while this option was set; another report shows a failed JavaScript resource being ignored before a final ContentNotFoundError. The option therefore does not establish that every resource-loading failure will be suppressed or that the resulting PDF is complete. Review the historical issue reports.

If you use the option, still inspect stderr, verify the expected assets are present in the PDF, and correct the underlying missing or inaccessible reference where possible. Whether it helps depends on the failure and build; the reports do not establish a universal result.
Separate wkhtmltopdf failures from wrapper failures
PDFKit, jsreport, and application export features may invoke wkhtmltopdf with generated HTML, temporary files, or their own options. A failure in that path can look like a renderer error even when the original template’s paths are valid. When practical, reproduce the job with the exact generated HTML, command, and execution context outside the wrapper. If direct execution succeeds, compare the wrapper’s working directory, temporary HTML location, resource URLs, and command-line options. If it fails the same way, continue with the failed-resource checks above. The available issue reports cover both command-line and wrapper contexts but do not establish one wrapper-specific cause.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing options before finding the failed URL: This can hide useful evidence or leave the actual broken reference in place. Start with stderr.
- Testing only in a desktop browser: The PDF process may use a different host, container, working directory, credentials, or network route.
- Assuming “Done” means success: A final progress message does not rule out a resource-loading failure or exit code 1.
- Blaming every failure on images or every failure on relative paths: These are documented cases, not a complete list of causes.
- Assuming the ignore flag guarantees a PDF: Historical reports show the final ContentNotFoundError can still occur.
- Applying an old issue workaround as a current universal fix: The cited cases identify versions 0.12.5 and 0.12.1 and do not prove identical behavior across builds.

If your actual need is a website screenshot or PDF rather than running wkhtmltopdf locally, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, request a PDF with the API’s documented output option:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -d format=pdf -o page.pdf
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the output and other request parameters. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Frequently Asked Questions
Why does wkhtmltopdf fail after the progress output says “Done”?
“Done” is progress output, not proof that every referenced resource loaded. Check the earlier stderr messages and the process exit code.

Does ContentNotFoundError prove that the website itself is down?
No. It means a referenced resource could not be loaded in the PDF job’s context. The resource may be missing, inaccessible to that process, or resolved to the wrong path.
