If Windows updates will not download, install, or finish, start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, then choose the next step based on where the update stops and any error code shown. The troubleshooter can identify problems and suggest fixes, but it is not a guaranteed one-click repair.
Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends starting with the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app on Windows 11. It diagnoses system configuration and offers findings and suggestions; it may not resolve every problem. Microsoft also documents a Settings route:
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Next to Windows Update, select Run and follow the prompts.
- Restart when the troubleshooter finishes, then check for updates again.

On Windows 10, the documented route is Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. For current lifecycle and support information, consult Microsoft’s Windows 10 support page.

Identify where the update fails
Before trying more involved repairs, note the full error code, the update name, your Windows version, and what the progress indicator was doing. Microsoft lists stuck updates at 0%, 100%, and 51–99% among common problems. Its error-code associations are clues, not proof of a single cause:

These are associations and troubleshooting suggestions on Microsoft’s support page, not definitive diagnoses. Windows edition and build can affect which steps apply.

Try basic checks before changing update files or services
- Confirm the device has an internet connection, then restart it.
- Check available storage. Microsoft’s retrieved guidance gives 16 GB free for an upgrade on a 32-bit OS and 20 GB for a 64-bit OS, but does not state when those figures were published or establish them as requirements for every current Windows build. Check the specifications for the Windows release you are installing. Microsoft notes that a USB drive may be needed when a device’s hard drive is small.
- Run the troubleshooter if you have not already done so, and follow the instructions for your Windows version.
Microsoft also describes clearing the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution as a possible remedy. This involves stopping and restarting the Windows Update service and deleting cache contents, so follow Microsoft’s version-specific instructions rather than deleting files or changing service state casually.
Repair system files when the symptoms point that way
For relevant system-file problems, Microsoft documents running DISM and then System File Checker from an administrator Command Prompt. These are command-line repair steps, not the first response to every update error.

- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100%.
See Microsoft’s instructions for using System File Checker. DISM may use Windows Update as its source for required files, so a failing update service can affect this repair path; Microsoft does not describe the command as always working offline.

If the issue began immediately after a recent update, Microsoft says uninstalling that update may help. Use the recovery option that fits what happened: removing a recent update is different from going back after a Windows version upgrade, reinstalling Windows, or using System Restore. Microsoft explains these separately in its Windows recovery options guidance. Back up personal files before broad or potentially destructive repair steps, as Microsoft advises in its update troubleshooting guidance.
