If Windows Update started failing after a Windows 11 feature update, first back up important files, note the complete error code, and run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. Then choose a repair based on when the failure occurs and whether it followed a single update or the move to a new Windows version. Error codes suggest possible causes; they do not prove one diagnosis.
Before troubleshooting, record the error and protect your files
Back up important personal files before attempting repairs or recovery. Copying them to a separate USB or external drive is one option. Microsoft recommends backing up before troubleshooting Windows Update (Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide).
Write down the full error code and when it appears: while checking for updates, downloading, installing, or restarting. Also note whether Windows starts normally. These details help distinguish an update-client failure from a driver, storage, system-component, or startup problem.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and basic checks
On Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Alternatively, use this Settings path:

- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the prompts and restart the PC when the troubleshooter finishes.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Before trying again, check that the PC has a stable internet connection, adequate free storage, and power. Some repairs require an administrator account. Microsoft provides the Get Help option and additional troubleshooting steps in its Windows Update troubleshooting instructions.
Use the error code to choose a targeted next step
Microsoft’s error-code list associates codes with possible causes, not guaranteed diagnoses. Use the code as a clue, then follow Microsoft’s instructions for that code rather than making broad registry or service changes.

Repair system files if corruption is suspected
If the error or symptoms suggest damaged or missing Windows components, Microsoft directs users to run DISM before System File Checker (SFC). These commands require an elevated Command Prompt.

- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait until verification reaches 100%. - Restart Windows and check Windows Update again.
By default, DISM obtains repair files through Windows Update. If that source is unavailable because the update client is broken, Microsoft documents using /Source and /LimitAccess with a valid repair source. Do not guess the source path; follow Microsoft’s instructions for DISM and SFC.
Consider an update-cache reset only when it fits the error
For a suspected download-cache problem, Microsoft’s procedure includes stopping the Windows Update service, removing the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starting the service again. The expanded instructions also include command-line component-reset procedures. These are advanced steps: they require administrator privileges and careful use of Command Prompt. Follow Microsoft’s full cache and component-reset instructions rather than improvising commands.

Choose recovery based on what triggered the problem
When Windows still starts, identify whether the trouble followed one particular update or the upgrade to a new feature version. Prefer the least disruptive applicable option. The choices differ in what they preserve and whether they are available on your Windows version or device.

If Windows Update fails after one specific update
For Windows 11, first consider Fix problems using Windows Update, Microsoft’s repair reinstall, if the option is available. Go to Settings > System > Recovery and select Reinstall now. It downloads and installs a repair version of the last successfully installed OS update while preserving personal files, apps, and settings. The option may be missing on managed PCs, on versions older than Windows 11’s 2022 annual update, or on systems without the February 2024 optional update or a later update. If the repair reinstall is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, Microsoft’s guidance covers uninstalling a recent update. Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Before removing a security update, understand the security implications; Microsoft says Windows 11 users should try reinstalling the current version first. Follow Microsoft’s recovery options for the appropriate path.
If the feature-version upgrade itself caused the trouble
Windows may offer Go back to return to the previous version. Microsoft states that the option is available for 10 days after upgrading. This rolls back the version upgrade; it is different from uninstalling an individual quality or feature update. See Recovery options in Windows for the steps and conditions.
If Windows will not start
Microsoft lists Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) options that include uninstalling an update or resetting the PC. A reset can be configured to keep personal files or remove everything; an installation-media reinstall removes everything. A BitLocker recovery key may be required for WinRE paths. Back up what you can before a disruptive recovery action and read each on-screen consequence carefully. For a work or school device, contact your IT administrator before proceeding.
