If a screenshot file exists but Windows cannot open it, fix the file-type association first. If Win+Shift+S does nothing or Windows reports that no app is associated with ms-screenclip, repair Snipping Tool and its capture protocol instead. These are separate problems: a screenshot can be saved successfully even when Windows does not know what should open it.
First identify what is failing
“Captures cannot open” can describe three different failures: an image was saved but will not open, the capture shortcut cannot launch Snipping Tool, or Snipping Tool cannot save the capture where expected. Start by checking whether a new screenshot file exists. That simple check helps avoid changing the wrong Windows setting.

Microsoft documents launching Snipping Tool with Windows+Shift+S or PrtSc. By default, image captures are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder, although Snipping Tool’s settings can change the save behavior or folder. Those defaults make the existence and location of a file useful clues, not guarantees.
Fix a saved screenshot that will not open
If the screenshot file exists, begin with its extension. A PNG uses the .png association; JPEG images commonly use .jpg or .jpeg. Windows may have a file even if no suitable default viewer is assigned, so the failure to open does not by itself mean the capture was lost.

- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for the affected extension, such as
.png,.jpg, or.jpeg. - Select the extension, then choose an installed image app such as Photos, Paint, or Snipping Tool.
- Try opening the screenshot again. If you use more than one image extension, check each affected extension separately.
Microsoft’s Default apps settings support choosing an app by file type or link type. Use an installed application that appears in the list; do not select a program you do not recognize just to dismiss the error. If the file opens in Paint but not in the app you expected, the capture itself is readable and the remaining issue is the chosen default or that app.
Repair Win+Shift+S and the capture protocol
If the shortcut itself fails, changing the PNG association may not be enough. Windows uses the ms-screenclip protocol to route capture requests to a handler. Microsoft’s Default apps settings allow searching for a protocol as well as a file extension.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for
ms-screenclip. - If Windows offers an installed Snipping Tool handler, select it as the protocol’s app.
- Test Win+Shift+S again. If the same association error remains, repair the app before attempting more invasive recovery.
Do not assume the shortcut and saved-image associations are one setting. If a PNG opens normally but Win+Shift+S still fails, focus on the protocol or Snipping Tool package. If the shortcut works but saved PNGs fail to open, return to the extension association.

Repair, then reset Snipping Tool
Microsoft’s documented app-maintenance sequence is to try Repair first and use Reset if Repair is unavailable or does not fix the problem. Reset can clear local app state, so note any custom save location before using it.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Snipping Tool, open its menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available. Test the shortcut or app after the repair completes.
- If Repair is missing or ineffective, return to Advanced options and select Reset. Then reopen Snipping Tool and check its settings and save location.
Repair is the less disruptive first step. Reset is the next documented option when Repair cannot be used or has not helped. If the exact controls are not available on your PC, Windows edition, or managed configuration, do not substitute an unverified registry edit; ask your administrator or follow the support route available for that device.
Check where Snipping Tool saves captures
A capture that was taken but cannot be found may be a save-location problem rather than an opening problem. Open Snipping Tool, choose See more (…) > Settings, and review the automatic-save option and the Screenshots folder location. The folder can be changed, so do not assume every screenshot remains in the default location.

- If automatic saving is off, save a test capture manually.
- Use Ctrl+S to save a copy to a simple local folder, such as Desktop. This helps separate an unavailable or redirected destination from a failed capture.
- After using Reset, revisit the save settings and confirm the folder is still the one you want.
- If the file is saved to a work or school location that is unavailable, test a local folder before changing broader account or sync settings.
Keep the original capture if it exists, even if the current viewer will not open it. Test with a copy where possible, and avoid deleting files or changing unrelated defaults until you know whether the issue is the capture, its path, or its opener.
When repair does not restore Win+Shift+S
A Microsoft Q&A incident dated August 8, 2026 describes the error ms-screenclip://?source=HotKey followed by “This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action.” In that individual case, Repair, Reset, package checks, and service checks did not resolve the problem; a moderator suggested re-registering the Microsoft.ScreenSketch package in PowerShell, and the person who reported the issue later said Snipping Tool worked after reinstalling it.

On a managed PC, policy or the Windows image may control app associations. Microsoft Learn describes configuring default associations by extension or app and exporting or importing them with DISM for Windows images. That is primarily an administrator or deployment task: ask IT to check the deployed image or policy rather than trying to override an organization-managed setting yourself.
Troubleshoot by symptom before escalating
- File exists; only one image type fails: set the default for that exact extension in Default apps.
- Images open; the hotkey fails with an association message: inspect
ms-screenclip, then Repair and, if needed, Reset Snipping Tool. - Captures happen but are missing: review the automatic-save setting and folder, then save a test copy to Desktop.
- Repair and Reset have no effect: check whether Snipping Tool is available for reinstall through the supported route for your PC; involve IT if device policies apply.
- Multiple inbox apps fail: treat this as potentially broader than a single image association and seek Windows app-package or servicing support.
Before escalation, note your Windows edition, whether the error affects only PNG/JPG opening or also the shortcut, whether the file is actually created, whether Microsoft Store apps can open, and what you have already tried. Those observations make it easier to distinguish a single association from a damaged app package or a wider Windows problem.

No. Start with Default apps and Snipping Tool’s supported Repair and Reset options. Registry deletion can create a broader association problem and is not needed as a first-line step.
