If Windows Defender Quick Scan won’t start, appears stuck, or fails, first check that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the active protection provider, then restart and update Windows before trying another scan type. The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; they are general checks, not a diagnosis for a particular PC.
1. Start Quick scan from Windows Security
- Open Start, search for Windows Security, and open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Quick scan and check whether it starts and completes.
To check one specific file or folder instead, open File Explorer, right-click the item, and select Scan with Microsoft Defender. In Windows 11, you may need to choose Show more options first. Microsoft’s Windows Security instructions cover these scan entry points.
2. Check which antivirus provider is active
In Windows Security, open Settings and inspect the security-provider information, or use the provider link shown under Virus & threat protection. If another antivirus or antimalware product is active, Microsoft Defender Antivirus may be disabled automatically. Microsoft says Defender should return to active mode automatically after the other product is uninstalled.
Do not remove security software from a work- or school-managed PC without checking with the administrator. On a personally managed PC, remove a competing product only if you intend to stop using it and have confirmed how the replacement protection will work. Microsoft explains provider status and how non-Microsoft antivirus affects Defender.

3. Restart and retry under lighter workloads
If Microsoft Defender scan appears stuck or takes unusually long, restart the PC and try Quick scan before opening other applications. Close unnecessary apps and let the PC remain idle while the scan runs. Also check that the drive has available space. These are Microsoft’s published checks for slow or incomplete scans; they are sensible troubleshooting steps, but not a guaranteed repair for every scan that will not launch. See Microsoft’s malware-detection troubleshooting guidance.
4. Install Windows and protection updates
If Defender scan failed repeatedly, install available Windows updates, restart if requested, and try again. Microsoft also recommends installing the latest protection updates manually when errors persist during Defender updates. The available instructions do not establish one definition version as a universal fix, so use the update path provided by Windows Security rather than relying on a version number from an old guide.

| Scan type | What it checks | Restart | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick scan | A quick check of common locations where threats may be found. | No | You want a routine, relatively quick check. |
| Full scan | Every file and program on the device. | No | You want a more thorough check and can allow more time. |
| Custom scan | Files or folders you select. | No | You want to check a particular location or item. |
| Microsoft Defender Offline | A scan that runs after Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment. | Yes; the PC restarts automatically afterward. | You suspect persistent malware or want a scan without Windows fully loaded. |
To run a Full, Custom, or Offline scan, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select the scan, and follow the prompts. Save open work before starting an Offline scan. After it finishes, check Protection history in Windows Security for the result. Microsoft describes these scan types and their behavior in Virus and Threat Protection in the Windows Security app.
No scan type guarantees detection of every threat. Avoid adding antivirus exclusions as a workaround for a Quick scan problem: Microsoft warns that excluded files are not checked and may leave the device more vulnerable.

6. Escalate with the exact error details
If the scan still will not start or repeatedly fails, note the full message or error code, when it appears, and which scan type you tried. Submit feedback through Feedback Hub or follow Microsoft support guidance. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting steps do not map every Quick scan error code to a single cause, so avoid applying generic registry edits, service resets, or command sequences without advice specific to the error and device.

Windows 10 security-support status
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC may still have Windows Security, but the end of support is a separate security concern; upgrading is not established as a repair for Quick scan launch problems. See Microsoft’s Windows security troubleshooting information for the support-status context.
