If Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V still work but Windows logo key + V shows stale or missing items, Clipboard History may have stopped recording even though ordinary paste remains available. Confirm the feature is on, check Microsoft’s documented limits, then try restarting Windows Explorer as a temporary diagnostic step—not a guaranteed fix. One Windows 11 user reported that Explorer restart restored new entries temporarily, but the cause of that case is not established.

First, tell a history problem from a clipboard problem

Copy a short text string in one app. Try pasting it into a different app with Ctrl+V, then press Windows logo key + V and look for the new entry.

  • If Ctrl+V pastes the text but Win+V does not show it, ordinary clipboard transfer is working; the symptom is specifically that history is not recording or displaying the item.
  • If Ctrl+V also fails, this is not just a history-display symptom. The reports described here do not establish what is causing that broader problem.

A Microsoft Q&A report describes working ordinary paste alongside an empty Win+V history, while the Windows 11 report matching this symptom describes history stopping after repeated copy/paste activity. Neither report identifies a root cause. Microsoft Q&A report; ElevenForum report.

Make sure Clipboard History is enabled

  1. Press Windows logo key + V.
  2. If Windows prompts you to turn on Clipboard History, select Turn on.
  3. To check the setting directly, open Settings > System > Clipboard and confirm Clipboard History is enabled.

These are Microsoft’s documented controls for using the feature. Microsoft Support: Using the clipboard.

Check whether the item fits Clipboard History’s documented limits

Microsoft Support says: “Your clipboard history is limited to 25 copied entries.” The documented limits and behavior are:

  • 25 entries: When the history is full, older unpinned entries are removed as new ones arrive.
  • 4 MB per item: Microsoft lists text, HTML, and bitmap as supported formats. An item beyond the stated size limit, or in a format not listed, may not appear as expected.
  • Restarting the PC: Unpinned history is cleared when Windows restarts; pinned items are excepted. This documented behavior concerns a PC restart, not restarting the Windows Explorer process.

Microsoft’s page was accessed in 2026 and does not display a publication date for these limits. Microsoft Support: Using the clipboard.

Try restarting Windows Explorer

Restarting Explorer is a quick test if history has stopped updating, but it is not an established permanent repair. In the September 17, 2026 Windows 11 forum report, the author said restarting explorer.exe temporarily restored new entries. In a separate Microsoft Q&A case, an advisor suggested the same step, but the original poster said it did not solve their problem. These are individual reports, not proof that Explorer is the cause or that the workaround will succeed for everyone.

  1. Right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager. If Task Manager opens in its compact view, select More details.
  2. Find Windows Explorer in the process list. Select it, then choose Restart.
  3. Wait for the taskbar and desktop shell to return, then copy a short text string and check Win+V again.

The taskbar and Start menu may briefly disappear while Explorer restarts. The procedure is described in the Microsoft Q&A thread; the temporary recovery was reported in the ElevenForum thread.

If history stops again, record what changes

Before trying speculative fixes, note the facts that could help distinguish a recurring pattern:

  • Windows edition, version, and build
  • When the failure starts and which apps are involved
  • Whether Ctrl+V still pastes the latest copied item
  • Whether Win+V opens, and whether it shows old entries or an empty history
  • Whether the issue follows repeated copying, and whether restarting Explorer changes it
  • Whether the history stops again after it temporarily recovers

The reviewed reports do not identify a specific Windows build, update, service, registry setting, or permanent fix for this exact symptom. Recording the observations is more useful than assuming a particular component is responsible.

Escalate cautiously if the problem persists

A Microsoft Community/Q&A thread about a different recurring Clipboard History issue suggests a clean boot or testing a new local account to investigate possible software interference or account-specific configuration. Those are general diagnostic suggestions, not proven cures for the Explorer-restart symptom described here. Microsoft Community/Q&A thread.

The available reports do not establish whether a policy, app, shell extension, background process, or Windows defect is responsible. They also do not show that registry edits or service changes fix the issue, so do not treat those changes as established troubleshooting steps.
