If an app is already on the wrong screen, focus its window and press Windows key + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows key + Shift + Right Arrow. To address recurring placement, check Windows’ display arrangement and its window-location preference under Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays. These steps handle different problems: the shortcut moves an open window, while display settings can affect behavior when monitors are connected or disconnected.
Move an open app to the correct monitor
Click the app on the taskbar or use Alt+Tab to bring it into focus. Then press Windows key + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows key + Shift + Right Arrow. Choose the direction that corresponds to the monitor’s position in Windows’ display layout. Microsoft documents this shortcut for moving a window between monitors: Windows keyboard shortcuts.
This moves the current window; it does not force the app to launch on that monitor the next time you open it.
Check Windows’ display layout and main display
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select Identify and match the numbered display tiles to the physical screens.
- Drag the tiles so their left-to-right arrangement matches where the monitors sit on your desk. This matters because Windows uses the logical arrangement to determine which direction a window moves.
- Select the display you intend to use as the main display and check its main-display setting.
The primary-display choice and the left/right layout are separate checks: choosing a main display does not correct a mismatched arrangement. Microsoft explains how to identify and rearrange displays in How to use multiple monitors in Windows.

Adjust the setting for monitor disconnects and reconnects
Go to Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays, and review Remember window locations based on monitor connection. Choose the option that fits your docking or undocking routine, then reopen the affected app to see whether its placement changes.
Microsoft describes what should happen in a supported undock-and-redock workflow: “When you undock your computer, the windows on your external monitor are minimized. When you re-dock your computer to your monitor, Windows puts everything back exactly where you had it before.” This is Microsoft Support’s description of that connection scenario, not a guarantee for every app or every launch: How to use multiple monitors in Windows.

Check whether only one app remembers the wrong position
Some applications save their own window positions, so Windows’ connection-memory preference may not control where they open. Try moving the app to the desired display, closing it there, and opening it again. If it returns to the unexpected screen, the app may be restoring its own saved position.
A Microsoft Q&A user reported this behavior on Windows 11 Pro 24H2 even with the Windows preference unchecked; that is an individual report, not evidence that all Windows 11 systems have the same issue. Consider PowerToys FancyZones for new windows
If you want a configurable utility, Microsoft PowerToys FancyZones includes Move newly created windows to the current active monitor. In FancyZones settings, review that option and also check Move newly created windows to the last known zone, since remembered zone behavior may affect where a new window appears.
FancyZones is an optional workaround, not a universal fix: Microsoft’s documentation does not promise that every app will follow these settings. See FancyZones utility for Windows.

Use Windows display modes only to check detection
Press Windows key + P to view PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only. These choices can help you check whether Windows is detecting and using the expected displays. They are not per-app launch-position controls; use the window shortcut or settings above for placement. Microsoft documents these modes in How to use multiple monitors in Windows.
