Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a webshot image misses content that appears in a normal browser, check two settings first: increase the capture delay so late assets can render, and remove viewport clipping if you intended a full-page image. Then confirm whether you are using legacy webshot (PhantomJS) or Chromium-based webshot2, because their defaults and selector behavior differ.
The examples below cover both R packages, the separate Webshot browser extension, and a hosted alternative when maintaining a headless-browser setup is not worthwhile.
Start by identifying the symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The page is present, but text, images or cards that appear later are missing | The capture happened before scripts or remote assets finished | Increase delay incrementally |
| The screenshot stops at the browser-window height | Viewport clipping was requested | Remove cliprect = "viewport" |
| Only one component is present, or a component is cut off | A selector or clip rectangle is narrowing the capture | Remove selector/cliprect, or verify the intended CSS selector |
| The same call behaves differently after a package change | Legacy PhantomJS and Chromium-based webshot2 render pages differently |
Check the installed package and version |
Use the smallest change that matches the symptom. A longer wait cannot repair an image that was deliberately cropped, and removing clipping cannot make an image that was captured before rendering complete.
Make the R capture wait for late content
In both package APIs, delay is the time to wait before taking the screenshot. It is useful for JavaScript-rendered sections, lazy images, fonts and other assets that are not ready at the instant the page first becomes visible. The documented examples use delay = 0.5 or delay = 2 as practical values, not guarantees for every site.

Legacy webshot
webshot::webshot(
"https://example.com",
"page.png",
delay = 2
)
Run the call, inspect the result, then increase the delay in small steps if content is still absent. A fixed delay is only a pause; it does not prove that a page has reached a semantic “finished” state. The documented API describes a time delay, not a universal readiness-event or network-idle detector.
webshot2
webshot2::webshot(
"https://example.com",
"page.png",
delay = 2
)
Use the same incremental approach with webshot2. If a page loads some sections quickly and others slowly, compare images at several delays rather than choosing a very large value immediately. Excessive waits increase job time without fixing a clipping or selector error.
Capture the whole document instead of the viewport
A visible browser window and a full-document screenshot are different regions. The legacy repository documents a default virtual viewport of 992×744 pixels, while the default screenshot includes the page beyond that viewport. The image becomes viewport-only when the call explicitly clips it.
Remove viewport clipping for a full-page image
webshot::webshot(
"https://example.com",
"page.png",
delay = 2
)
In particular, remove cliprect = "viewport" when it appears in your call. In webshot2, the documented behavior is also to include the whole page when neither cliprect nor selector is supplied.

Use a selector only when you want a component
webshot::webshot(
"https://example.com",
"main-content.png",
selector = "#main-content",
delay = 2
)
This intentionally captures the element matched by #main-content. Do not combine a component selector with the expectation of a full-page result. If the selector is wrong, matches a hidden element, or points to a container whose height is not settled yet, the output can look blank or truncated; test the same URL without selector to separate a selector problem from a rendering problem.
Check which package and browser engine you are running
Legacy webshot uses PhantomJS. Its repository notes that PhantomJS stopped development in 2018 and recommends webshot2, which uses Chromium-based browsers. A page that works in a current desktop browser can therefore expose different JavaScript, CSS or asset behavior under the legacy engine.
Record the installed package before changing code
packageVersion("webshot")
packageVersion("webshot2")
sessionInfo()
If only one of the packages is installed, the corresponding packageVersion call will report that fact as an error; record it rather than silently ignoring the result. Include the package name and version in any bug report.
Try the Chromium-based successor
When a legacy capture remains incomplete after you have corrected the delay and clipping, repeat the call with webshot2::webshot. Keep the URL, output path, delay and selector the same for the first comparison so that the browser engine is the variable you changed. The successor retains the documented delay argument but is not identical to PhantomJS, so inspect the resulting layout rather than assuming pixel-for-pixel parity.

Account for selector differences between webshot and webshot2
The package references document an important difference: legacy webshot uses the first matching element for a selector, whereas webshot2 uses all matching elements. A selector such as .card can therefore produce one card in the legacy package and a combined capture of every matching card in webshot2.
If a migration suddenly changes the captured region, make the selector specific (for example, #pricing .card:first-child where that selector is appropriate) or remove it while diagnosing. Treat a changed region as a configuration difference, not evidence that the page finished loading at a different time.
A repeatable fixing workflow
- Save the exact call. Keep the URL, output filename and every option, including
delay,cliprectandselector. - Capture without narrowing options. Remove
cliprectandselectortemporarily so you can see whether the entire document renders. - Set a modest delay. Start with a short value such as
delay = 2, compare the image, and increase it only when the missing area is clearly late-rendering content. - Identify the engine. Note whether the call is from legacy
webshotorwebshot2; repeat with the other package when practical. - Reintroduce intentional cropping. Once a full-page capture is correct, add the desired selector or clip rectangle and verify that the resulting region is the one you meant to publish.
- Keep a known-good call. Store the smallest working example so later page, package or CSS changes can be compared against it.
Troubleshoot the remaining failure modes
Content appears only after scrolling
First test a longer delay. If the target uses viewport-triggered lazy loading, a time delay alone may not cause content below the initial view to request its assets; compare a full-page call and inspect whether the missing area is an unloaded asset or a crop. The package documentation supports waiting, but it does not provide a universal readiness event that guarantees every lazy resource has been fetched.
Images are blank while text is present
Increase delay and compare several captures. Remote image responses, font files and client-side image replacement can arrive after the initial HTML. If the page is still incomplete in legacy webshot, test the same call in webshot2 to determine whether the browser engine is involved.

The output is exactly the browser-window size
Search the call for cliprect = "viewport" and remove it for a document capture. Also remove any other explicit clip rectangle while testing. A viewport-sized image is a bounds problem even when the page itself finished rendering correctly.
A selector capture is empty or unexpectedly large
Run a capture without selector. If that works, verify that the CSS selector exists at capture time and that its dimensions are settled. Then account for the package rule: legacy webshot selects the first match, while webshot2 captures all matches documented for the selector.
The page is still wrong after a long delay
Do not keep adding seconds indefinitely. Confirm the URL is reproducible, remove clipping and selectors, and try the other package engine. A long fixed wait cannot correct a browser incompatibility, a selector mismatch or a page that never delivered the requested asset.
You cannot explain the difference
Create a reproducible report containing:
- the package name and version;
- the complete call, including every option;
- the target URL;
- the runtime or browser context when relevant;
- the expected image and the actual image; and
- whether the missing region is blank, partially rendered or cropped.
Those details distinguish a late-rendering problem from a bounds or engine problem without guessing at the target site.

Do not confuse the R package with the Webshot extension
A separate Webshot browser extension uses different controls. Its full scrollable capture mode is named Entire Page: it scrolls to the bottom, captures each screen and stitches the images into a tall result. Its Delayed Screenshot tool counts down before capturing the visible area. The extension’s countdown is not the R package’s delay argument, and its visible-area mode is not an instruction to capture the entire document.
Performance and reliability considerations
- Delay costs time. Every extra second is added to each capture, so increase the wait only until the target’s late content appears.
- Full-page images are larger. A tall document requires more image memory and produces a larger output than a viewport capture; use a selector or viewport clip only when that smaller region is actually the requirement.
- Engine choice affects repeatability. PhantomJS is no longer developed, while
webshot2uses Chromium-based browsers. Record the package and version alongside generated assets so a later migration is explainable. - Keep options explicit. An omitted clip produces a different result from
cliprect = "viewport", and a selector changes both region and, across packages, matching behavior.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
For the same kind of full-page capture without installing PhantomJS or Chromium, use the API endpoint documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, waits for a selector, a delay or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, user-selected cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify a switch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the two-second delay a guaranteed setting for every site?
No. It is a troubleshooting starting point. The required wait depends on the target page’s scripts and remote assets, so compare captures and adjust it for that URL.
Why can changing from webshot to webshot2 alter how many elements a selector captures?
The documented selector rules differ: legacy webshot uses the first matching element, while webshot2 uses all matching elements.
The Bottom Line
Fix missed content in order: increase delay for late rendering, remove viewport clipping for a full document, then verify the package engine and selector rules. If maintaining that browser setup is unnecessary, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-call capture with cleanup and billing verdicts.
