To troubleshoot Watch Dogs: Legion on Windows, first record when the problem occurs and your graphics settings, then verify the game files if it crashes or will not start. Check that your hardware matches the resolution and visual settings you are targeting, update the graphics driver, and test settings or overlays one at a time. The right fix depends on whether you have a launch failure, low frame rate, intermittent stutter, or a specific rendering defect.
Record what is happening before changing settings
A short baseline makes it easier to identify which change helps. Note your CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, graphics-driver version, launcher, selected DirectX mode, resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing and upscaling settings, and average FPS. Record when the problem happens and any error text. Also note whether the PC freezes or only the game closes, and whether the issue began after a game or driver update.
Change one setting or variable at a time, then repeat the same activity in-game. That way, you can tell whether the change affected the symptom rather than guessing from several simultaneous tweaks.

Check your PC against the settings you want to use
Meeting a game’s minimum requirements does not mean it will run smoothly at every resolution or preset. Ubisoft’s October 2020 specification article gives separate configurations for 1080p low, 1080p high, 1440p high, 4K ultra, and ray tracing. Compare your system with the tier closest to your actual target, including the GPU, video memory, RAM, and CPU—not just the minimum row. Ubisoft’s 2020 PC specifications are historical configurations, not current purchasing advice.

- For the 2020 ray-tracing-disabled 1440p high recommendation, Ubisoft listed an Intel Core i7-9700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, an RTX 2060 Super, 8 GB video memory, 16 GB dual-channel RAM, and 45 GB storage.
Storage listings differ by source and date: Ubisoft’s 2020 article lists 45 GB for the configurations above and 45 GB plus a 20 GB HD texture pack for its 4K ultra configurations. The Ubisoft Store game page consulted October 7, 2026 lists 80 GB and Windows 10 and Windows 11. If the game crashes or will not start, verify its files
File verification is a supported first step for a crash or startup failure. In Ubisoft Connect PC:

- Open Library and select Watch Dogs: Legion.
- Select the gear icon beside Play.
- Choose Verify files and allow the check to finish.

Install a suitable current driver from the support channel for your graphics-card vendor, then restart Windows and test again. A driver update can address driver-related problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every crash or performance issue.

Intel Iris Plus graphics with red-black corruption in DirectX 12
Intel documents a specific Watch Dogs: Legion DirectX 12 issue: red-black corruption in the 3D world on Intel Iris Plus Graphics in the Windows 10 and driver environment described in its support article. Intel says the issue is fixed in driver 30.0.100.9667 and newer. If you have that GPU and that rendering defect, update to a fixed driver. Intel also describes switching to DirectX 11 as a workaround, but warns that performance is much lower in the described case. For low FPS or stuttering, reduce load and isolate the cause
First test a lower resolution or graphics preset, then reduce demanding features such as ray tracing if enabled. Repeat the same scene or activity and compare the result. If performance improves, restore settings selectively to find which option is most costly on your system.

Overlays and background processes can also be worth testing, but treat this as diagnosis rather than a proven universal cure. In an August 29, 2023 Steam player-support discussion, a Ubisoft Support reply advised checking CPU and GPU utilization, testing overlays, and checking shader-cache space and access in the reported case. - Check whether CPU or GPU utilization changes when FPS drops.
- Temporarily disable one overlay at a time, then retest; restore it if it makes no difference.
- If you suspect a shader-cache problem, check that the cache has available space and can be accessed rather than deleting files at random.
Use crash timing to narrow the next step
- Crash on launch: verify files, record any error, and note your driver and DirectX mode.
- Crash repeatedly in the same scene: record the location and graphics settings, then test a lower preset or resolution one change at a time.
- Low FPS throughout play: compare your hardware with the relevant resolution and preset tier, then test lower graphics settings.
- Intermittent stutter: record when it occurs and check CPU/GPU utilization; test overlays individually.
- Red-black corruption on Intel Iris Plus in DirectX 12: follow Intel’s driver-specific guidance above.
Ubisoft discussed stability improvements and graphics optimization in November 2020, and its development team described single-player as being in a solid state in a December 2020 message. Those launch-era statements provide historical context; they do not establish a current support commitment or guarantee stability on present-day systems. Contact support with a useful troubleshooting record
If the problem continues, send Ubisoft Support your hardware, Windows and driver versions, launcher, DirectX mode, resolution and settings, crash timing and error text, and the results of file verification and controlled setting tests. Avoid destructive file changes, registry edits, or third-party driver utilities unless support for your specific issue directs you to use them.
